I was bored and started pivoting some US gov't RITA/BTS data on key international routes and thought I'd post it here. The data is for 2013 and represents the load factor (passengers/avail seats) on int'l routes originating from the US. I have the data down to the airline level. High load factors don't necessarily mean profitable flights (and low load factors don't necessarily mean unprofitable flights), but I thought this data was interesting nonetheless.

A few observations: I think SAN and SJC should be worried about the NRT flights. CVG's flight to CDG isn't doing so hot. IAD and IAH don't fill up the plane on most routes, but probably have the premium class to make up for it. ATL, LAX and SFO are pretty high load factors across the board.

I'll list the data by top 10 international destinations, sorted by load factor. I'm sure I'll put more data up later when I have more time.

Interesting info -- thanks for the work. I assume this is the average LF for the entire year?

I am surprised by the low LF on the SAN-NRT route. I have never seen any actual numbers regarding the service but the fact that it's still op'ing daily and year-round, plus comments made by (I thought) reliable sources stating that things were looking good on the route that started in late 2012, it seems like things were good. Of course they still may be since, as you noted, LF is not THE determining factor for a successful route..

It would be helpful to find out how the LF varied during the year -- the effective high and low months. I know that with BA, we see high LFs in the mid 90s for many months, and the low for the year in the mid-70s in February - I guess the overall annual average works out to be 85%. Possibly JL has many good months and just one really bad month...?

the Load factors might be indicative of originating traffic BUT? What are the yields on Said Traffic??. To Bypass LAX-NRT for SAN-NRT might be a wise choice for the airlines flying the route as they might have a little higher fare than they might command from LAX due to competition. SJC -NET might command More Premium Service because Silicon Valley HAS the "Bread" to support such service. If One is looking for a bargain? Fly SFO-NRT. .. , What We can't know is What are the BELF on secondary hubs vs megahubs??

This is quite interesting as you can determine LF for hub airlines on monopoly routes.

- Seems the DL/AF/KL JV is doing quite well on loads out of ATL on their monopoly+megahub routes.
- KE loads to ICN out of ATL yet they are still sending the A380. Korean manufacturing in the SE and the related travel contracts dictate the A380 vs a 744?
- ATL-AMS 4x daily on KL/DL and avg 92% LF on 763/A333 mix. Wow.
- ATL top of the list for international LF, nice.

What it means is that LHR is the leading international destination, and MIA flights to LHR have a 90% load factor. MIA is not the leading market to LHR, but it has the highest load factor of any US airport with flights to LHR.

LHR is the largest foreign market for the US as a whole. Within US-LHR to MIA-LHR subset has a 90% load factors. This is not indicative of overall volumes from the US to LHR, where NYC-LHR is by far the larger market.

Not quite. Look at what AA, BA, etc are flying on JFK-LHR, and what they're flying MIA-LHR. I think there are more flights on JFK-LHR than MIA-LHR.

I don't know if BA flies A380s to MIA. I know they fly the 744 there though.

Here's more food for thought. Look at the CDG flights. PIT-CDG has a higher load factor at 78% than PHL-CDG. which was 76% according to this data. Is PIT-CDG bigger than PHL-CDG? (I seriously hope I don't have to answer this!!) PIT-CDG is seasonal and once daily on a DL 757. PHL-CDG, on the other hand, is not only run with a DL 757, but it's also a US/AA t'atl hub route with multiple widebodies flying it.

Obviously, the PHL flights are carrying way more people, but the LF is diluted by the amount of frequencies and aircraft type used by the given airlines flying the route.

BA has 2 daily flights to MIA year round. With an additional flight added during the winter season.

BA currently does not use the A380 to JFK.

What are this year's load factors for NH SJC-NRT? How about SAN-NRT? Now that each route has had time to grow and the 787 problems are long behind, is each building up successfully?

One thing I noticed is that PDX flights to NRT and AMS have healthy load factors, as does SLC-CDG. People have speculated that DL will discontinue SLC-CDG and PDX-NRT.

Very interesting, thanks for taking the time to pull and post the data. Am I to understand these are how nonstop flights rank according to load factor?

Have to be careful of what you infer from load factor alone. There's a considerable host of other factors that play into a routes overall performance such as cargo, premium demand, competition...etc.

CVG-CDG for example: lots of cargo and full BizElite cabins make the flight a strong performer despite low average year-round loads. I was actually surprised to see the load factors on the flight were that high seeing as connecting traffic has become but a trickle.

I am curious to see what IAH-NRT looks like (#1 in your list...) now with the extra flights UA added.

Being that IAH is a bit higher on the premium/biz demand to many places those numbers seem healthy IMO.

This is what confuses me. June is the worst weather month in Japan, and July is noted as being one of the top months for international tourists, despite the oppressive heat. I wonder what's causing this.

Couple of notes on RDU..

Didn't realize the LHR loads were that high... All I have to say is, with or without subsidies, that's pretty good. Plus with the cargo loads it takes, that's a good self sufficient flight. If the subsidies are in use, the flight is gangbusters. If the subsidies are not in flight, that's some pretty good numbers.. Either kinda way, bravo.

The YYZ numbers look terrible! 56% load? I always thought the numbers were more decent than that... Guess with those numbers, well always have just CRJs....

The CUN flights don't show up... Is that because it's Sat only or were they not running during this timeframe?

Is MIA-AMS correct? Only 46%?

Now does anyone have the Total Available Seat Miles/Kilometers for the same city pairs. Would be interesting to compare total capacity available in comparison to seat load factors.

DTW has 86% SLF on DTW-ICN, next city on the list is 5pp behind.

Also, is FRA really the 4th most served INTL destination from the US? I find that surprising.

No Chinese cities on the list yet!

None of the Saturday-only CUN flights to other markets are on the list.

87% DEN-NRT on a 787 has got to be very good news. Fares on the DEN n/s are also quite a bit higher than DFW, IAH or ORD non-stops.

IAD-NRT at 72% ... UA+NH really need to right size this market. If JL jumps in it'll only get worse ... much worse.

With the very rapid expansion of ME3 at DFW, plus all the new AA services to Far East, I wonder if this 79% can be maintained.

IIRC first route launched by UA when they received their 787s, so that had to have been early late 2012.

I filtered out any routes with fewer than 10,000 passengers in a year so that charters, diversions, and other non-regularly schedule flights wouldn't show up. The RDU-CUN numbers are:

I didn't know that DUB was the 8th busiest European airport from US. Ahead of some bigger cities by population like Rome, Vienna and Brussels.

Great to see DEN is ahead of the curve Intl. load factor wise. I am surprised though, that nothing DEN-MEX can really stick. I know that UA, MX, AM and Y4 have all tried it over the years with out any one having a lasting, year round go of it. I guess that explains the 74% LF. Otherwise, not bad for a city that a mere 20 years ago had just a few token dailys to YVR and YYC, a couple weekly flights to Mexican west coast beach destinations, and 2 or 3 weekly flights to Gatwick. Hoping DEN can get an AMS, CDG, possibly a return to ICN, maybe another LHR flight and some more Latin routes.
