Air Algerie Flight AH5017 Crash

Thu Jul 24, 2014 11:08 am

Quoting BoeingVista (Reply 39):
I doubt that there is land based missile system in all of Africa that could take down a commercial aircraft at cruise height.

Egypt has the BUK system. So yes there is, even though that's quite far from the route the aircraft was flying.

Quoting redadeco (Reply 43):

The aircraft is a B717 leased from Swiftair, the crew is Spaniard and the great majority of passengers are believed to be French.
Only 2 Algerians on board.

Isn't it a MD-83?

These things usually come in threes... but not usually so close together. Here's hoping all on board are safe and maybe made a safe landing somewhere remote.

Would it have been a night flight? Seen mention about 0155GMT so even allowing for +1 or +2 it would still have been dark?

Presume first Spanish reg plane to crash for a while as well?

It is also worth noting that there are ETOPS considerations in the area.

They were most likely routing via Gao, Mali and Ain Salah, Algeria.

I'll pull up the charts later if I have time.

Air Algerie Airliner Crashes, 116 on Board

The Air Algerie airliner reportedly going missing early Thursday has crashed somewhere in Niamey, capital of Niger in western Africa, according to China Central Television.

The flight AH5017, a MD83 with 116 on board, vanished from radar 50 minutes after it took off from Ouagadougou Airport in Burkina Faso, the official APS news agency reported.

I would say this just adds credibility to potential weather-related incident. Not saying the storm made the plane to crash, just that it played a significant role.

Actually, it was initially captured by Taureg fighters, a couple of months later was captured by islamists, to be finally captured by the French a few months after that. IIRC you do see the odd bombing crop up in the news from time to time, but it's still very much under French/Malian control (the French signed an agreement this year to base troops there).

Last contact doesn't mean crashed in. It means when the plane was last contacted. Check out MH17 or MH370 as to the crash site and the place of last contact. Two separate locations.
