First Air China 747-8i Fully Painted

Fri Jul 25, 2014 2:29 pm

The first Air China 747-8i rolled out the paint shop. And it is quite incredible!

Registration is B-2485

What a beauty!

Looks old, even when new. (Due to the livery, not the design of the aircraft)

Still, it does have an elegant touch to it.

It's actually refreshing to see one painted in a classic cheatline livery in this day and age, without it intentionally being a retro.

I think that's why I like it. Even though CA's livery is mostly white, the cheatline style is just classic and was seen decades ago on the 747. It's a treat now to see it again.

Looks very, very nice. Air China's livery is classic old school. Personally, I think the -8 is the best looking 747, even over the beautiful -400.

Here's to more airlines flying this great looking bird. Sadly, I'm not optimistic we'll see many more. Hope I'm wrong.

So glad to see another PAX operator of the 747-8! I remember seeing the first jumbos (Pan Am and KLM) when I was about 11. I was awestruck by the 747! I imagined that this would be the plane of the future. Now, 43 years later, I am still awestruck by the 747; the magic has not worn off. And it still is that "plane of the future." Maybe that's why I like the Air China livery - the cheatline is classic (even if it goes back to the country's Communist era); a classic scheme on a classic airliner. I could not ask for more!

There's something about this livery on the 747 that just fits and adds to it's majesty. seeing 737's and others with this paint is ho hum, but for some reason when you see any of Air China's 747's, there's a bit of genuine aviation excitement that wells inside of me.... I may be alone in this thinking, but I like it on The Queen.

Nice plane but very outdated livery. Doesn't do justice to beautiful plane. 2 airlines from same country, one is so old school (Air China) whilst other looks more creative and artistic (China Southern).

It is quite something to look at! A beautiful bird indeed. If the Air China logo had been painted in the same blue as the stripes it would help the livery somewhat. Otherwise, old school all the way! No school like the old school!

As always the 747 is a stunning airplane, it'll always be my favourite.

But here is the issue: most passengers don't appreciate a cheat line livery. I bet two thirds of everyone who flies on this aircraft will think it's old. Hell, they might even think it's a 744. There's a difference to the a.net community and the flying public.

Mostly, it's the fact a.nutters aren't willing to let go.

It's old, it's outdated, and it's not pretty anymore.

None of the above can be said for the 747, though.

40 more passengers compared to a 777 and 4 engines just doesn't work for airlines. It's all about the 2 engined planes.

Yes--the cheatline paint job on the fuselage looks, albeit somewhat dated, still very classic and elegant. Whereas that wonky red logo seems to belong to another airline. I guess that's what happens when the Politburo runs your marketing dept.

I am sorry to state the obvious here, but I am gonna come out and mention the elephant in the room!
This is an epic fail. Other than the engine lining, it looks exactly the same as the CA 744 which I have flown many times SHA-PEK and always early AM so I dont have particularly fond memories.
Bad, bad, bad! The CA logo is handwritten by Mao Tse-Tung, believe it or not, it is true!!
CA and all the CB3 are in desperate need of a new livery. For MU is not coming soon enough. Hope CA and CZ follow suit soon!

If not for the engine chevrons, wingtips, longer fuselage and SUD...one could be forgiven for imagining it as their Jumbo of yore.

Air China can be congratulated for keeping this classic livery and putting it on their new modern birds. They have gone against the trend of swirls etc and kept the part if the livery that most people want every airline to have: a cheat line! So while it might not be the most modern livery out their, at least they have kept away from those god awful advertising companies that would insist on something so removed from Air China or China it represents some lake, cloud, bird, frog or whatever! We'll done Air China! And Boeing for those magnificent wings!

What you've just done is proven that this is purely a matter of personal taste. I'd say the new AA livery is one of the very few times where new was much, much better. The old livery was incredibly dated -- almost as badly so as Air China's current livery.

(And sorry, Air China. Congrats on the new plane and all, I used to live in HK and love everything Chinese, but that livery looks terrible. Honestly, even the original 1980s livery was more visually interesting and modern.)

I have to say that for those complaining about how "old" the livery looks, here is some food for thought.. The Boeing 747-8 has the same lines for the most part as the 747-100 that made its debut back in 1969, with that being said, this livery fits the 747s lines quite well, as it has from the 747SP up until the 747-8.. I'd also like the note that odds are had Air China come up with something new, there would be a ton of people crying for them to bring the current livery back.. As someone else noted above, sometimes new isn't better..
