Etihad B787 & A380 With New Tail Liveries

Sat Aug 02, 2014 3:04 pm

The first Etihad Airways 787-9 is spotted in final assembly with the same tail fin colors as the A380. This pretty much confirms the new "desert diamond" livery for the company.

I think it's the design freak in me that's in love with that livery. (Tail only, so far, obviously).

It's so eye catching, yet elegant.

This excites me.

EDIT: Apparently, I have an unnatural amount of love for geometric shapes.

Mate, you must be my twin!
I second you on EVERYTHING that you state!
I ummmmm, even designed a house on geometric principles, (blush)...
And because of this obsession, this new colourscheme is my most anticipated new one ever! I am actually highly excited in anticipation! James Hogan, you better have gotten it right, or you will be disowned as an Aussie in my books!

And KarelXWB, what a catch! Brilliant spotting, mate! Now if only we can have another accidental Boeing leak on the new livery like happened with China Eastern and their four proposed new liveries...

Cheers,
Bunumuring.

The new tail colors for the 380 and 787 are horrible ! Worst out there by far.

Really too bad since the current tail for EY is very classy.

Well in that case we must respectfully agree to disagree! To me the current Etihad tail looks like it's out of a Disney movie or belongs to some tinpot despot in a tropical climate or was the result of a children's 'design a fantasy airline' primary school project.
Geometric shapes in the colours Etihad appears to have chosen? Classy, distinctive, cool, timeless, cultured.
Keep smiling,

To me the current EY livery looks like the colours of a Head of State's aircraft from the early 1980's - one from a regime kept afloat by patronage from either the CIA or Brezhnev's Moscow. The new logo holds the promise of a modern forward-focused business and I'm glad it looks to be adopted fleet wide.

Am I the only person who read the title of the thread and thought they were putting an A380 tail on a 787? Of course I clicked on the thread thinking WTF. I think the title should read "Etihad 787 with the same tail fin colors as the A380."

I'm exactly the same, I love the livery on the tail!

I have a strange amount of love for simplicity with a combination of elegance, although I hate most eurowhite liveries so much that they make me mentally constipated.

I hope the 'desert diamond' colourscheme isn't just for 'first-of-type' deliveries...
I'm sure it's not, and I desperately hope it's not, but I guess it still can't be ruled out.
Anyone know when the next 777, A32X etc roll out of the production line for Etihad? Hopefully spotters will be keeping an eagle-eye on those too!
Sad the ex-Air India 777-200LRs just missed out, but I am sure they will be in the fleet long enough to be repainted in the colours eventually.
Cheers,
Bunumuring.

Put me in the camp of 'eagerly excited'. The ME carriers Gulf, Qatar, and now Etihad (hopefully) will have some beautiful schemes, it'll make Emirates look a little bit staid. I wonder if egos being what they are if Emirates will quietly be looking at a new scheme?

Hey mate,
I suggested this in the 'other' Etihad tail colours thread and got flamed for it! Seems many a.netters (except you and me obviously) think that Emirates colours and design are timeless, kind of like Pan Am or Air France eurowhite or KLM...
I agree with you that Emirates probably have options on the table now for their own version of Etihad's 'The Residence' and 'Apartments', as well as at least tweaks to the colourscheme on the planes to keep them looking fresh. Qatar possibly do too because you and i both understand how these things work in the ME. I don't see anything wrong with the current Emirates scheme, but Etihad arguably has the headlines ATM...and is likely to make a huge splash when the 'desert diamond' is revealed! Emirates can order 150 x 777X and gain headlines for a day, but people were talking for days and even into the next week about Etihad's new initiatives! On a side note, I Still don't understand why they had to get Dannii Minogue involved though in the YouTube launch videos - they lost a bit of gloss for me by using her as an ambassador!
Roll on Etihad!

I don't think so. There's already two A380 tail fins on these colors.

I applaud this livery design, which so far looks gratifying among many bland and overly simplistic liveries released recently. Out with the old and in with the new in this case is welcomed. At the same time, this livery is intriguing and hope to see the rest of it soon.

Wasn't there an event coming up in the Middle East that could be used for the reveal?

I hope Qatar and Emirates stay put with their liveries. They're already unique. Though knowing how capricious Mr. Al Baker can be, if anyone is to jump the gun it will be him.

I see what you mean.

This would be EY's last 77F on order for their cargo fleet.

All their 777s will stay in their current colors, only A380s and 787s will have the new livery I believe.

Hi mate,
This sounds ominous...
Makes my previous idea of the new scheme being designed to publicize the Residence and the Apartments a bit more likely, even thought the Dreamliner only has the later (and modified at that, if I remember correctly).
I don't like it when airlines are inconsistent with their branding. What United did for their Dreamliners was fine in my mind (just making a cheat line go all wavy) but to have a totally different colourscheme just for two (albeit flagship) types leads to inconsistency in the mind of the consumer.
Cheers,

I can get into BIG trouble if I go beyond what I've already said! And thanks for the kind words!

But consider this. I work for Landor as an Executive Creative Director. I am very close to our "go to" airline ECD. And I have said I think the whole thing looks fantastic. Peter Knapp, the ECD I just referenced (a designer born with wings) may deliver something polarizing, but will NEVER do anything like Iberia. (Unless tortured into it by the client). PK always strives for emotionally evocative design even if some may hate it. He's much rather paint a 777 lavender than Euro White and challenger the "globe, flag, bird, name" trap.. I don't want to put words in his mouth, but I believe, that he believes in the BRAND and conveying that brand via distinctive and differentiated and relevant design.

There is a post somewhere on here that has a photo of an Etihad economy seat with a small back pillow in place. If anyone can recall what post that was, look at the design on that pillow and start connecting dots.

Sorry all. I'd love to shout from a mountain top, but I just can't.

If the day comes - perhaps I can shed some light on things. Love to all, VC10er!

Could he come up with some renderings for those liveries we universally dislike here ? IB & AY for starters.....

Looking at those seat fabric designs, is EY maybe coming up with a similar range of tail designs, not just the one as per the A380 tail seen ? Works well with JetBlue.

I already like it and I have not seen the entire thing painted yet! I have always liked those colours together, though it might look a bit too much if they extend it to much on the fuselage. If the majority of the fuselage is white and maybe a little of the grey, it will look great! Really looking forward to the reveal!

As for EK, I can live with it. For Qatar, it's much grey. And burgundy and grey IMO don't blend very well together... No offence to Qatar or your flag intended

True, but this is only a row of Y class seats here. Maybe the business/first/suites have some in the A380 tail pattern. And maybe future 787's / 380's will have this seat pattern. I can see this working really well as long as the overall brand remains instantly recognizable as the new EY.

As for the lumbar pillow on a Y seat, it is NOT what is above. It was a single shot of one seat with one pillow that is CLEARLY inspired by the A380 tail. Looked like it was suede. And I'd put it on my sofa in a second!

How about the pamphlets and ads for the new cabins? They have a faded geometric overlay and brown, gold, desert diamond colours? I can't seem to find them at the moment, but I know they had something about the "Economy Smart Seat" with some hints of the new brand image overlayed?

There appears to be an EY 77W in the FAL with the rudder in the current colours..l/n 1235 I think.

Yes, line 1235 WE267. Should roll out of the factory August 14.

BINGO! That's the pillow!

If a "house style" which is the term for the design guidelines LANDOR would provide an airline customer so they in turn can give to their suppliers who make stuff for them. Often they don't match the livery exactly, but play off of it via colors and graphics. I think that is a beautiful little pillow if the images of the A380 tail is the new identity.

MANY YEARS AGO, when we did VARIG, they used our livery (the compass which I loved) and yet they didn't really use all of the "house style" with rigor. The interiors we designed which were Fk'ing beautiful. Dark blue with golden leather and light blue touches. Business and F looked rich and fresh, even though the seats they were covering were rather dated. But they did use the core elements well: the compass, the redrawn letter forms for V A R I G (my all time favorite airline name lettering) and the script "Brasil" where the "s" was drawn to look like an "s" or a "z". I have cordial glasses at home that I nipped before she went away. In fact I am looking at it now and it STILL looks classy and unique.

We all know an airline is an ambassador for its home country. In the case of the UAE there are basically 2, and EY needed something to set it's personality apart from it's #1 rival! And it will!

VC10er, you and I really do have the same taste...
VARIG's compass scheme is one of my all time favorites! I really loved the font and style too... The hand scripted 'Bras/zil' against the strong assertive yet traditional V A R I G lettering... And the little touches like the 'dashed' cheat line arrangement ... And the colours, swoon!
I have a feeling that I will want to decorate my home in the Etihad geometric style, lol... I am a bit obsessed with all things Moroccan and geometric, and the colour palate Etihad appears to favor ATM.
VC10er, sir, my continuing total respect and understanding.
Cheers,
Bunumuring.

You flatter too much! But i"m glad you agree on V A R I G, when it was first done on there 747, then 777 it was stunning.

but this is about EY, and I promise to keep YOU and all posted.

abraco!
