Cathay Going 77W On HKG-SYD

Sun Aug 03, 2014 12:38 pm

Cathay Pacific will start using the 777-300ER from December 3rd of this year. Starting 3/7, going daily from February 1st 2015.

About time I have to say. Having only regional products on that sector supposedly really hurts Cathay's performance on the Kangaroo Route.

What are you talking about?

CX has been using long haul J and Y products on the SYD 333 services for many years now.

SYD is always the first to have new cabin products, only long haul seats are used across all Aussie routes even the six and half hours flight to Cairns. Did you mix up CX with someone else?

Whops my Bad, thought this would mean the route gets First, but it doesn't as it's only the 3 class version.

So from 4 x 333 flights to 3 x 333 flights and 1 x 77W flight. Smart move. If they need additional capacity they know what to do...

Since HKG - Aussie is bilateral limited, i can see CX upgauging all their Aussie services (exc ADL CNS) to 77W within 5 years, and a small chance they might introduce F to SYD and/or MEL

Even if they did have regional products, how would that hurt them? CX/QF own that route with their duopoly of 4x daily CX and 1x daily QF flights, with VS having withdrawn from the route. A shame as you can usually find fares 50% lower if you're willing to go via MNL/KUL/TPE and sometimes SIN.

Also, I think a lot of that traffic comes from Europeans transiting through HKG. For example BA codeshares with CX on the HKG-SYD route, offering an additional option for LHR-Australia passengers. I imagine quite a few passengers from other European destinations such as CDG and FRA also transit through HKG on CX on their way to Australia.

Incidentally I am flying LHR-HKG-SYD next week with the BA A380 and new CX A330 product all in J class. Can't wait!

CX will also be reducing the seating in premium economy on the A330 by one row and increasing the capacity of Y to improve the financial performance.

By the way - premium economy will shortly be removed from all services to India and the Middle East as the market isn't strong enough for it - polarised around economy or business.

Finally!! Something other than CX A330's the amount of those things in Sydney is a little boring! And the mighty 77W! Only thing better would of been a return of the 744!

It provides SFA additional capacity up front where they need it. The 77G and 33G have very similar J/PEY cabins.

All that is gained is around 100 more EY passengers, it is not really worth it.

Exactly. I feel the same and that would be the most appropriate / logical move.

Hahaha. I bet they would like to, but they would like to run the half-hourly shuttles with the smallest type in the fleet instead   Upgauge all their flights to their largest type and if that isn't good enough then order some 380s just for the SYD flights

More pax are preferring to fly via HKG just to avoid flying over the unrest Middle-East region in light of MH17 tragedy.

Or the A333 will be replaced with A359 (new biz class) to Australia?

I doubt 1 in 1000 passengers has the faintest idea what route flights take and what countries they overfly.

I know the new business class is very nice, but out of 4 daily flights I think they could offer first at least in one, i´m sure many pax flying to Europe would use first.

Maybe with this move they are looking more for the belly space than for the increase of seats with this B77W addition.

most pax think that if you take a straing line in a map from origin to destination that will be your route, and most of the times is not even close (for long haul), But i´m sure with the latest issues some people has started worrying more about things that before where meaningless for them, like type of plane, airline, routing.

I think its 41 77Ws at the moment. The 77Ws will be deployed on all long haul destinations in Europe, Africa, and USA by next year. They have announced new frequencies into the US, and additional ports into Europe/UK.

Is it just that they haven't updated the website yet, but CX139 on 12th April 2015 is still showing as A333? The March flights are 77W. I know the summer scheduling usually starts about then, so thinking it could be for that reason.

They should very well be looking to up the number of seats, they lost quite a few when they introduced the new cabin products because they consume more space.

With the imminent retirement of the 744s, will there be a chance of a third daily HKG-SFO flight? The flights are always full when I travel with then.
