I'm really surprised to see this because I thought the Gambian government had prohibited flights between FNA and Gambia.

Tests last night, however, confirmed that the woman did not have the virus which has killed a total of 826 people in western Africa since February.

So if she didn't have the virus, why the scare?

If a flight arrives from West Africa with a woman sweating and vomiting, and then she drops dead, it would be easy to jump to conclusions, yes?

Thank god it wasn't as Im sure it would be scary for the other passengers onboard too. There has been criticism about how seriously European authorities are taking this outbreak and with the death toll rising maybe its time to take things to another level in monitoring passengers from the effected areas.

I'd freak out. 100X more if my daughters were nearby.

Concur. Ebola is scary.

I hope that new medication "ZMap" is mass producible even though the risks are unknown. But with the alternative being an extremely high death rate...

Because the media is hysterical and causing so much more panic than need be because it means more viewers.

No, because you don´t die from Ebola like that.

Perhaps the media should establish the facts BEFORE publication.

Fear leads to a lot of irrational behaviors, whether or not the fear is justified. Hence the saying "the only thing we need to fear, is fear itself".

At that point, either you have it or you don't. There's literally nothing else you can do but have someone else help you, so why externalize your fears?

Or, more to the point, why make other people afraid? Ah:

Quoting OA260 (Reply 3):

It's all about control.

That would be like tracking matches because there was a suspicious house fire... only it was traced to an electrical fault. But because "some people" think the government isn't doing enough to combat arson, we should regulate the sale of matches to keep people from thinking they'd be afraid if it ever happened to them.

The press report of Vomiting and Sweating sounds more like Malaria, which is prevalent in West Africa.

There is a possible case at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. So far all that's been released is that the patient recently arrived from a country in West Africa. With such lack of specificity there's no way to know what flight he may have been on.

It's not transmitted by air but by fluids. Don't share fluids with someone on an airplane you should be fine.

The throwing up and dropping dead is scary because it's not Ebola so it might be more easily transmitted whatever it is.

Scary to think of what else nasty there is out there, if it had such a quick onset.

According my information this Ebola is highly infectious, easier to get this then the flu!

So the media is advised by authorities to keep the people calm.

Imagine- all flights should be cancelled just for quarantine-
ALL flights to Africa have to be cancelled immediately and all ships originating from Africa have to be stopped... that's the desaster scenario everyone's afraid of...

Not really, the signs are there way before it gets to the "okay, gonna go die now" stage. Painful, bloody urine is usually a sure fire way to notice it.

Living in Zambia, I got malaria a few times, and basically, if you start to feel sick (like a head cold) you go to the clinic or hospital or whatever, have a blood test, if the results come back negative, you check again in a week, if they come back positive, you get medication. A regimine of tablets for two weeks and you're set. Some vomiting and cold sweats, but if it's diagnosed early, which it should have been, it's no worse than a stomach flu and head cold combined.

I say it should have been, because people in Africa are aware of the disease, and it's symptoms, the medicine is very cheap and effective, plus, she'd have had other symptoms before just dying. Not saying millions don't die from it, however. But if she was well off enough, or in a position to travel abroad, which costs a lot for most Africans, she should have been aware of it. (Not to make it personal, just most deaths occur in villages and places where there is little information of the disease)

Vomiting? Food poisoning, maybe? Sweating? Stress? Nervous flyer? Malaria, possibly, but I don't think so.

I do think now is the time to step up non checking passengers travelling from affected regions. I'm not for scaremongering at all, but Ebola is a highly lethal and incurable virus and it needs to be kept in check.

The official death toll from the current outbreak is now 877, which has leaped by over 200 fatal cases in just the last calendar week, that I DO find alarming. Whilst the numbers are much lower than occur on a daily basis via Malaria for example, most Malaria deaths are caused by lack of proper care. Ebola on the other hand, can potentially thrive in the developed world and is not treatable. Something for us all to be keeping an eye on for sure.

I would imagine it's a matter of time before at least one of the Euro carriers pulls out from the affected region. Whilst I know these routes are said to "print money" for airlines, if there are no pax to fly or they are too scared to so so, what's the point? May as we'll suspend service until it dies out.

So far very little action has been taken to stop Ebola arriving in any Western country. The easy move would be to halt all flights from a country with an outbreak but no that is not happening. Why is this?

Money. You'd be surprised how many people around the world have the "that won't happen to me" mentality.
That, added to lower fares and more availability, means a lot of travel will happen, outbreak or not.

Yet they are still happy to fly over Iraq.

There is a form of malaria which affects the brain primarily where sudden death can occur though even then its rarely that sudden but certainly not the slow relapsing fevers, sweats of uncomplicated malaria. I've seen people die in a few hours of cerebral malaria on mission trips in SE Asia.

Cerebral malaria is quite rare, but you are right, that definitely might be the cause of this.
