Hurricane Iselle May Impact Hawaii Flights

Tue Aug 05, 2014 8:11 am

In case you haven't heard, Hurricane Iselle, at present, a powerful category 4 hurricane, is spinning in the Central Pacific on a path that will take it right over the Hawaiian Islands beginning on Thursday. Forecasters expect the storm to lose intensity before making landfall on or near Hawaii's Big Island as a strong tropical storm with winds expected at 60 mph with higher gusts. The storm is expected to track over the other main Hawaiian Islands on Friday.
If you have travel plans this Thursday or Friday to or from any of the Hawaiian Islands, you will want to pay close attention to weather forecasts. If you recall, last July, Tropical Storm Flossie had a big impact on air travel to Hawaii with Alaska, American, USAir, West Jet, and United cancelling several, if not all of their flights to Hawaii.
On the heels of Iselle, is another big storm. Julio is also on course to impact Hawaii beginning on Sunday.

Here are some links to the storm coverage:

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCPEP4+shtml/050240.shtml

This is what happened to Hawaii flights last year when Flossie came calling.

I'm flying HNL-SYD-PER on QF this Friday morning. Really need to be home for Sunday, so if my flight is cancelled I am in the sh*t!

Tropical Storm Julio is tracking almost right over Iselle's footprint as well. Would reach Hawaii by early next week.

Also, Tropical Strom Bertha in the Atlantic is going to become a large extra tropical storm which will approach Ireland, England and Northern France on Friday.

Also(!), Typhoon 11W is forecast to strike Shikoku Island, Japan by Friday.

Safe travels to those that are flying during this period

FWIK, Pacific Ocean storms are called Typhons, right? Only Atlantic Ocean storms are called Hurricanes, no? Or have they decided to change the nomenclature (a la snow storms and such getting a names, too)?

East Pacific ones are still called hurricanes.

Hawaiian has also posted travel advisories and the options to make free changes to future travel.

They become known as "Typhoons" on the other side of the International Date Line, typically around 180 degrees. Eihter way Hurricane or Typhoon is considered synonymous.

This is actually not a bad development - Iselle likely will churn up cooler, deeper ocean water that will significantly stunt the development of Julio. Additionally, there's always the possibility of a jet stream buckle of wave which would redirect the latter.

DL has issued a similar advisory: http://www.delta.com/content/www/en_...s/advisories/hurricane-iselle.html
I might add that once a storm passes 140 degrees it then falls under the administration of the Central Pacific Hurricane Center as the NOAA/NHC in MIA relinquishes control. Past 180 degrees the U.S. Navy/USAF Joint Typhoon Warning Center then takes over along with international interests in meteorological services.

This storm could still be at tropical storm or depression once it passes 180 degrees and become the next Pacific Typhoon.

Anyone know if the hurricane hunters (53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, USAF) were involved in tracking this storm?

Actually Tropical Strom Genevive will likely be the next typhoon. It's located about 1000 mi SW of the Hawaiian Islands and should cross the Date Line in a couple of days. It is also forecast to have hurricane force winds after it crosses the Date Line. It's not being discussed because it's only a threat to shipping interests. It will turn north late in the forecast period and should stay east of Wake and west of Midway.

Also, Julio is looking like it may turn to the northwest and track north of the Hawaiian Islands. We'll see, still a long way off.

It is approaching 177 W now, and will start its pole-ward track between Wake & Midway... Snowfall for ANC?

Due to the impending storm, Hawaiian Airlines flight 56 from Maui to Los Angeles, departing August 7th, will leave earlier than scheduled. The flight, originally scheduled at 9:40pm, will depart Maui at 5pm local time. Customers leaving on this flight should plan to arrive at the airport as early as possible to make this flight.

The flight will depart Maui at 5pm, stop in Honolulu for fuel and a crew change, and continue on to Los Angeles.

If customers are unable to arrive in time for the revised departure, they will be accommodated to the extent possible on neighbor island flights from Maui to Honolulu and from there to Los Angeles

United only canceled the late afternoon flights to KOA we still operated our early morning departures from both SFO and LAX to KOA. Also as it stands right now United has scheduled an extra segment each from SFO and LAX to KOA on tomorrow in addition to the normal schedule however UA has not scheduled an extra segment to operate LAX-ITO.

How are both of the storms going to impact the flight routes of Australia-LAX flights?
Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

So I lived in the Carribbean for 5-6 years and whenever we had storms approaching, the air fleets from the likes of Seaborne Airlines and Cape Air used to find their hurricane holes on other islands within range. What would/does Hawaiian do with the 717s that don't have the range to make it to the mainland without aux tanks do? Guessing it won't be too strong on Oahu when Iselle passes this go-arund - do they just tie them down and ride it out they ferry them somewhere more out of the way?

Ferrying an 18 strong fleet to the west coast would be prohibitive on so many levels. The fleet, as it always does, spent the night in HNL last night. I would imagine ground staff took extra precaution to secure loose equipment etc... The biggest benefit to keeping the fleet at "home" is that everything is in place for launching todays schedule.

Awesome, good stuff. Figured as much and just ride it out. It's not like planes aren't designed to travel through air at high speeds. It is the projectiles that offer the challenges. It was always suggested to park your car in an open field for a hurricane and not under trees/overhangs/near houses/etc. back in the island days. Advice that came in handy for hurricane Earl in 2010 - saved me from getting in deep doo-doo with Hertz!

If needed, they ferry the aircraft to an island not in the path of the hurricane. When Iniki hit in 1992, HA flew the DC-9s to the Big Island and Maui to protect them from the hurricane.

Really? I just flew HNL-OGG-HNL on HA and I am almost positive I saw some very late arrivals (12:30am from Kona IIRC) early departures in OGG. Surely they keep a couple in the other airports for the first flights out?

Overnight maintenance checks are done only at HNL, so all 717s have to go back to HNL for the night. The interisland schedule start at 5:00am with flights from HNL to the Neighbor Islands.
