Is AA Restarting JFK-FLL/TPA?

Tue Aug 05, 2014 11:21 pm

From the thread about AAs new F options

**Select flights include between:
Dallas (DFW) and Detroit, Chicago (ORD), Salt Lake City
Charlotte or Philadelphia and Minneapolis–Saint Paul
New York (JFK) and Fort Lauderdale, Tampa or Orlando
Chicago (ORD) and Boston, Washington, DC (DCA), Denver, New York (JFK and LGA), Raleigh Durham
Miami and Houston, Port au Prince
Fort Lauderdale and Port au Prince

AA does not fly from JFK to TPA or FLL

Did they tip their hand that they are restarting these routes?

Saw that as well last night, when pre-ordering the entrée for my next flight. Intriguing

These flights seem to act as placeholders for other flights cut. It's really random when they appear or disappear.

I think they will start LGA flights to both of these airports. The reduction of YYZ to 6 daily frees up a few slots and I'm sure they can shuffle slots around to start twice daily to FLL and TPA. I have no inside info but it's just a guess and a wish that it happens!

Seriously though, I'm shocked AA cut these routes. I'm sure they have their reasons but serving these markets from New York is kind of a must.

I'd be shocked at LGA.

They haven't served TPA or FLL out of LGA in years. In the case of FLL...many years.

Both were served out of JFK until last year.

I believe the F food exception has to do with connecting international pax expecting a meal

US is pretty big in FL leisure markets. I wouldn't be surprised, with the merger, to see these flights at LGA.

But isn't NYC to FL leisure solidly controlled by jetblue already ?

US owned NY to Florida at a time. Dont expect that to be resurrected. It was pre B6 and pre Delta hubs at LGA and JFK.

I would expect one or two a day out of JFK if it starts again.

American was relatively content to cede those low-yielding passengers to JetBlue, but now that they've severed ties, it's possible that American wants some of that traffic back.

With the merger, they already serve those markets with plenty of frequency through Charlotte. Like jfklganyc, I would imagine only once or twice daily service timed to connect with flights to/from Europe on the JFK end.

JFK-MCO they currently do it 2x daily mainline.

JFK-TPA they have done it and it was Eagle. If they restart it, I don't know if it will be an Eagle or a mainline flight. Maybe US will fly the A319 1x daily on that route, you never know.

JFK-FLL that I remember very well. They have done it 2x daily on 738 equipment. So yes if they restart that one, I'm sure it will be 2x daily (one early morning departure and one afternoon departure) on 738 equipment, or A321.

I don't see any of those markets out of JFK going more than 2x daily.

I know that LGA-PBI is a seasonal flight during the winter months. AA doesn't do much NYC-Florida though. They leave most of it to Delta and JetBlue.

JFK-TPA was only Eagle for the last few months. Mainline before that.

The route was originally LGA-TPA. That was one of the last Florida routes out of LGA besides MCO (And of course MIA hub). AA stopped flying LGA-Florida with the exception of MIA and all routes were moved to JFK.

LGA-PBI has since been relaunched. But that route has been on and off seasonal for years. Never JFK. Always LGA.

Yeah...New Yorkers don't do that to big spots in Florida. Sounds conceited. But it's true. You're non stop or you're not in the NY-Florida market

Really all that's needed is 1 daily A321 to feed JFK-MXP/ZRH, and offer New Yorkers the option of a FLL & TPA nonstop. The equipment can come from CLT, DCA, PHL to perfectly line up at either end. AA never had that kind of scheduling flexibility. Just like they still do today for JFK-MCO, 2 flights each way are required, so 1 links up with European arrivals & departures.
