Ethiopian, RwandAir To Start 5th Freedom From EBB

Fri Aug 08, 2014 6:00 pm

Air Uganda, the quasi national airline, had their air operators certificate revoked in June, following an audit of the policies and procedures of CAA by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) between 11th and June 17th, that stopped them from making international flights.

Quote:

New RwandAir and Ethiopian Airlines operations at Entebbe will help fill the gap created by the absence of Air Uganda which is under suspension, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has said.

Government granted the two airlines fifth freedom rights to fly the Entebbe-Nairobi and Entebbe-Juba routes.

But did the Kenyans give the ok for these two airlines to operate EBB-NBO? I doubt that.

EBB-NBO flights have not yet started. The Kenyan authorities are unlikely to assent, given that this sector is one of KQ's cash cows - they charge up to $350 in Y for a 55 minute flight. Protectionism is the name of the game.

Quoting af022 (Reply 1):
I doubt that.

You are totally right on that point concerning Ethiopian, since they fight as an eternal competitor, however it is really pity to see KQ so shortsighted to forget the Yamoussoukro aviation decision though!

... totally agree, moreover that fare is for departures during the late evenings only!!!

But what about the E.A.C. treaty rule?

Here are the destinations previously served by Air Uganda:

The Ugandan government should have allowed more than those two sectors (EBB-NBO and EBB-JUB) to be flown by foreign carriers, like on the Entebbe - Dar Es Salaam or Entebbe - Mogadishu routes, because i would not be surprised to learn that there is a * lot * of money to be earned on the latter route (to Somalia)...
