Last US 734 Flight Today 8/18

Tue Aug 19, 2014 6:32 am

The day has finally come. It looks like US flight 737 from PHL-CLT will be the last US Airways B737-400 flight in just under 24 hours. I looked into flying on the historic flight, but my schedule just didn't fit. I hope some other a.nutter will be onboard, and we will soon see a TR. Piedmont took the first 737-400 back in 1988 and the jet has been going strong ever since. The east coast will certainly have duller skies after this. Thank you for 26 years of service!

Amen to that.
It has served so well.
Hopefully we will get a report - especially the ship number.
In a thread recently I wrote of a picture of N434US in my office since 1992. Finally, on June
6th rode in that plane. Changed my destination from ALB to EWR to do so. So glad I did.

Sorry to see them go.

I thought that these were good planes and enjoyed the few U.S. trips I had on them. The larger concern for New AA management is accelerating the retirement of the MD80 fleet at AA.

Rode on one in December 2010 as part of a school field trip, FLL-DCA. $1,000 well spent!

Just goes to show how close pre-merger US was to removing all Boeing aircraft from the fleet.

It's a sad day. For over 25 years these old birds have flown people across the country and down into the Caribbean. Really amazing to think about what these birds have seen, who they have flown and where each passenger was going/coming from. I guess that is the beauty of air travel.

God speed the US 734.

N435US

There was a few in the other thread that said they will be on the last flight. Should be a good flight...only 79 pax booked as of last night.

I'm the fueling lead on Terminal C at PHL tonight, so I'll be in charge of getting it fueled...so I'll be there, in a way.

The 734s used to relatively long flights. In 1998 I flew one PIT-LAX.

So glad I got to see several of them when I was connecting through CLT in June, N343US and N345US included.

Were the flight number and routing a happy coincidence or did US do it for the occasion?

That would have been several VERY strange coincidences. Instead, it had all been planned last month: Final US Airways 737-400 Flights Announced (by UA767400 Jul 8 2014 in Civil Aviation)

I was on it and will be doing a trip report later. Pretty bumpy flight. Captain was retiring too, but we didn't get a water cannon salute. Needless to say the minute the seatbelt sign went off the av geeks ransacked just about every collectable.
Clear skies and strong tail winds.

Good riddance, their interiors were so shabby!!!! They had to go; will they end up with Sky King, in Africa or Venezuela??!! Perhaps AR would like to grab a few they specialize on recycling older planes.

Did US actually do anything special for this besides the flight number? Seems pretty underwhelming.

Water cannon salute in DFW and put a retiring captain on the flight. Other than that nope, but the avgeeks there made up for it.

Hah that's great, thanks for posting. Would have said hi had I known another a.netter was behind me. I didn't stick around afterwards as I only had 6 mins to run to my next flight (which somehow I made).

It is interesting to see that the US legacies have largely phased out the 737 classics well before the MD80 fleets. Or at least in the case of DL and AA, the MD80s have outlived most 737 classics from other carriers.

How much longer will UA and WN fly the 737 classics for?
Did you know that a Boeing 717-200 is really a McDonnell Douglas MD95-30? ;-)

All frames 24 - 26 years old, hat could well have been the 737-fleet that served longest for one airline worldwide. Where are those planes being scrapped? I doubt that except the odd frame they´ll fly again.

Sure, but recently only younger planes from the 1990s.

Indeed. As of 2 months ago, N435US had 65,000 hours and 43,000 cycles. Onward pax use is unlikely, freighter conversion is very doubtful.

UA kept some of their 737-200s for close to 30 years.

Wow, "No Smoking" and "Fasten Seat Belts" spelled out in words instead of using pictograms. That's definitely not something you see much anymore.
