American civilian aircraft have been banned from flying over Syria because of the risk from extremist groups.
The US's Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) said in a statement that such groups were "known to be equipped with a variety of anti-aircraft weapons'.
"Opposition elements" had warned against flying over Syria, it said.
Most American and other commercial airlines had already stopped flying over and into Syria during the past three years of the conflict.
In May last year, the FAA warned against flights over Syria, but on Monday decided to prohibit them altogether.

I realize that being American I'm supposed to be horrid at geography, but the flight path for DL 7 sure looks like it went over Syria yesterday.

My wife has flown to the Gulf Area several times since the war broke out and Syria and I clearly remember her flights taking her of Iraq and Syria. She is Syrian-American so I clearly remember it as was surprised then... She has always flown on UA and LH.

That's not the actual path. It flew over the Gulf, north of Qatar and Bahrain and then over Saudi Arabia and Egypt. FlightAware only tracked it over the Dammam area for a little bit and it wasn't until it hit northern Greece that tracking resumed. FA simply plotted a GC route between these two points.

Would that have any effect on operations at STL? The other day I took a look at Google Maps, as I wasn't sure where Ferguson was, and it was surprising to see how close it is to the airport.
