Have You Been On An Aircraft That's Gone Down?

Fri Aug 22, 2014 1:13 am

I was wondering, If anyone has been on an aircraft they has crashed in the past.

I was on 9M-MRD exactly 1 week from HKG - KUL before the tragic accident occurred... R.I.P.

I was asking, If any of you have been on that type of flight? Where the aircraft has gone down after your flight?

I've been on a small private airplane that went down with me on it. Does that count?

I took flying lessons in a Cessna 172 that another student later crashed upside down in a field.

I was piloting a Cessna 150 when the engine quit. Landed roughly in deep snow on top of tall grass. Avoided power lines and many trees. Very lucky not to be seriously injured or killed. The aircraft went to a salvage auction.

I flew on N865AS in 2009, about 3 years before it was involved in one of the more bizarre aviation incidents in recent memory:

I flew N106US about 6 years before Captain Sully did, back in January 2003 - when it was still in USAirways Shuttle livery between DCA and LGA

I was on World Airways DC-10, N113WA about 30 days before it slid off the runway in Boston. It was a LAX-BOS Flight and it was the same flight number. I was on the flight about December 15 and it crashed on Jan 23 1982.

I have always wanted to know that hence the reason for keeping a log book... However, one of only a few missing flights out of hundreds was on a MH 777 so it teases me to know that I might have flown on MRO or MRD but I will never know for sure. Is there a way to find out which tail number operated a flight back in 2005? I e-mailed MH but they said they don't keep the info that far back (I don't believe that) and I e-mailed ATC who said they have the data but cannot release it...

I know on Flightaware, It's possible to look back as far as since the aircraft went into active service, that's if you are willing to pay $.

Are you sure? Could I look back as far as October 2005?

I thought not even flightaware had data that far back... What would the cost for that kind of subscription be?

Knowing my luck I 'd pay the $$$ for nothing...

I was looking at that as you posted it and I'm curious that, did the pilot and co-pilot escape? Since it explains that the two passengers in the front row where never found?

On October 24 1997, I flew Flight AA 402, operated by N215AA. It was an MD-80 operating from SFO to DFW.

Two years later, June 1 1999, the aircraft crashed when it overran the runway at Little Rock. It was operating as AA 1420.

Apparently the flightaware data only can go back 4 months of historical flights... I might send them an e-mail though... I'm willing to pay $$$ to find out what MH777 operated the SYD-KUL flight I was on. The funny thing, according to wiki, flightaware started in Sept 2005 and the flight I want to know was the following month

As far as I know I've never been on a plane that's actually crashed. The closest I can come up with is I've flown on the CRJ-700 that had that infamous run in with an Air France A380 at JFK a few years ago, after it was repaired and put back into service, assuming the caption on this photo is correct.

I accumulated a number of hours in a Centrair 101 Pegasus that was involved in a mid-air and subsequent crash with another sailplane the summer before I first flew it. The aircraft was (obviously) repaired. I think the Kestrel involved was repaired as well. Fortunately both pilots survived, but one was seriously injured.

I don't keep a record of all of my registrations but I know a Grob Tutor I learned to fly on bought it not longer after I was in the cockpit.

Also flew BA's G-YMMM about a year before it went short of the runway at LHR.

My brother flew LAX-MEX on Mexicana in 1986 (AFAICR) on the red eye, few hours later that same 722Adv. would crash killing all on board due to tires inflated with normal air and not nitrogen.

I was supposed to be on Lockerbie Pan Am jumbo Jet and changed my flight at Barajas to JFK (instead of Heathrow to JFK), and well I am alive because It was not my time...

I worked A/C 753 many times which ended up taking a nasty spill in LGA last year. Shes now lives on in the form of a beer can(s). I also worked A/C 718 the night before she slid off the taxiway at ISP back in DEC 2012. I even took part of the tow that brought it back to the gate.

On a much more serious note I worked A/C 286 which used to be N471WN. That A/C overran the runway in MDW unfortunately killing a child. The CA let me sit in his seat for a minute or two, and I couldn't help but wonder what it must have felt like to sit in that very same seat that night.

AS963AS 1/27/2000. Four days before it went down in the pacific.
I also crashed a motorized hang glider in 1984 when a wing spar broke. Spent 3 days in the hospital with lacerations and a couple of fractured ribs.

I flew on 737-291 N980UA shortly before United retired it, after which it was sold to Conviasa, who immediately flew it into the side of a mountain.

I also flew on N820NW, the NW/DL A330 which was made famous when the underwear bomber lit hit genitals on fire...

When I was learning to fly I arrived one morning for my lesson and found a different instructor and aircraft to those I normally flew with, and when I asked why the guy said "didn't you hear what happened?". I later found out that the flight instructor I had been scheduled to fly with had forgot to refuel and so in one of the lessons before mine they had run out of fuel halfway through and crash-landed in a field. Both the student and the instructor were OK, although the instructor never came back of course. What was left of the plane was brought back on a truck and it was just left in the corner for a long time. Since then, I always check the fuel level very carefully before going anywhere.

I've been on two:

I've been on two:

1)N1277L Delta DC-9-32 either ATL-MCN or MCN-ATL in August 1976. Ten years later while flying with Aeromexico as XA-JED, this aircraft collided with a Piper PA-28 Cherokee over Cerirritos, CA

http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=19860831-0&lang=en

2)N988VJ Allegheny DC-9-31 either PVD-DCA or DCA-PVD in August 1969. Less than one month later this aircraft collided with a Piper PA-28 Cherokee over Fairland, IN

http://www.mcglaun.com/1969/N988VJ.jpg

http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=19690909-1

Note - both of these mid-air collisions were with Piper PA-28 Cherokee's !

I dont know as I didnt keep records of registration numbers back then, but been on Crossair Saab 340 few months before they crashed it, definitly been on the OS Fokker which crashlanded in Munich, on a Merpati Casa 212 which was lost shortly afterwards.

I thought I could remember that there was a DC 3 which went missing on the way to Los Roques. Cant find aynthing in the database though. Maybe someone can help if it was indeed a DC 3. There were 2 plane crashes with passangers which I am aware of on this route. But both were different crafts. If it was a DC 3, then chances are good I have been on it as well.

Of OS and Merpati I am sure. The other two I cant say.

Some incidents with planes I've flown with (previously):

AO DC9-32, EC-CGS, flown: CGN-AGP,
Aviaco DC-9 EC-CGS taxied out for take-off in heavy fog (approx. 300m visibility) for a flight to Santander. The aircraft inadvertently taxied onto the active runway 01. At that exact same moment an Iberia Boeing 727 (EC-CFJ) was taking off and was at or near the V1 speed when the crew noticed the DC-9 in front of them. They unsuccessfully tried to take evasive action; The 727's left wing and left main gear were torn off in the collision. Both aircraft caught fire and burned out.

MS B737-266, SU-AYH, flown: LXR-ASW-ABS-ASW,
In 1985 it was destroyed in MLA. On November 23, on a flight from CAI to ATH the plane was hijacked by 3 men.. After 22 hours of negotiation and several killings of passengers the plane was stormed by Egyptian forces. In the fight which followed hand grenades were thrown into the passenger cabin, causing a fire.

Not me directly but I did work with a guy who was on Lufthansa Flight 540 that crashed short of Nairobi Airport back in 1974. He was saved by being a smoker and sitting at the rear of the plane.

He still flew but as he said - how was I to get home from Nairobi if it wasn't by air!

This subject is creepy . . .

Thanks to my father I have a flight log since I was born but unfortunately I only began to record tail numbers 5 years ago ( thanks to you airliners.net guys)

I was hoping I had none but there is one, Libyana Airlines A320 5A-LAI damaged during the recent conflict in Tripoli

It's not much but I have flown on A6-ERG (EK A340-500) between SYD-DXB about a year before it had a pretty bad tail strike in MEL.
Let's fly! Unless it's on a CRJ 200, then I'll stay down here.

Quoting SXDFC (Reply 20):
On a much more serious note I worked A/C 286 which used to be N471WN. That A/C overran the runway in MDW unfortunately killing a child. The CA let me sit in his seat for a minute or two, and I couldn't help but wonder what it must have felt like to sit in that very same seat that night.

That aircraft originated in SAN that morning and if I hadn't traded off that day I would have loaded it up for that originating flight. That would have been weird...

Not much either, but my father was on BA's G-EUOE A319 GVA-LHR about 6 months after the engine fire, fuel leak and evacuation etc. I believe the cause was due to open engine cowlings that eventually got ripped off the engine as the plane took off.

I was on the actual flight pictured here back in 1997 with my (late) mother, helping her to fulfil one of her (and of course my own) lifetime dreams:

We were in 9 A/B, window above the letter E ....

It was scheduled to have been a British Airways SSC but was substituted last minute for Air France as a result of a three day BA cabin crew strike.

I don't think I need to detail what sadly happened to this bird just over 3 years on ....

Crashed (as PK-KKW) in 2001.

You mean.... 1JAN2007?

Another one for me was the old PK-GFS (F28)... I flew it a lot in the past (and I remember coz it shares the same initials as me)... ended up with a gear up landing in CGK and written off... effectively ending Citilink's 1st life... I have since flown with the newer PK-GFS too.

I flew on Dan-Air's HS748, G-ASPL as a passenger, several times (It was actually my first DA aircraft, LGW-OST with the UKs first female Captain, Yvonne Sintes, in 1974) before it was lost on a mail flight in 1986.

For some reason, despite not being such a frequent Qantas flyer, I seem to have flown on a disproportionate number of QF planes that subsequently encounter difficulty (all incidents highly publicized) - though thankfully, none have crashed.

VH-QPA (A330-300) - Flew between PER and SIN in 2005. In Oct 2008, this aircraft suffered a sudden altitude change while operating QF72 between SIN and PER. It made an emergency landing at Learmonth, WA. 30 passengers and 3 crew suffered injuries.

VH-OQA (A380-800) - Flew the inaugurals of QF's first A380 MEL-LAX-MEL in 2008. On 4 Nov 2010, this aircraft suffered an uncontained engine failure (engine no. 2) just after take-off from SIN as QF32 bound for SYD. It made an emergency landing in SIN.

VH-OJK (B747-400) - Flew in 2007 between SYD and SIN. On 25 Jul 2008, this aircraft was involved in an explosive decompression incident at FL290 shortly after departing HKG enroute MEL. The plane made a safe emergency landing at MNL.

Been on two aircraft that have since been written off, but in very undramatic circumstances compared to the rest of the thread. Both Stobart (then Aer Arann) ATRs. One landing incident and one jumped its chocks in wind. EI-SLM and EI-BYO were the two involved.

I flew on the MD-80 that crashed as NW 255, a few times when she was with Republic. Also flew on Alaska 261's MD-80 once.

I flew on the US Airways A320 that ended up in the Hudson. In 1985, I flew on British Airtours 737 G-BGJL one week before it was destroyed at MAN.

My wife and myself were on a Kingfisher ATR72 in March 2009, registration VT-KAC.
It was only recently, checking through the registrations I've flown on (well, those that I took a note of) that I found this very aircraft overshot the runway at Mumbai airport just eight months later.
Luckily, nobody was injured in the incident, but the plane, a mere 3.5 years old, was apparently written off.
Initially I though the photos of the incident didn't show that much damage to the plane, but these, a bit closer up, looks bad enough:
