If you look at the interactive route map on the SWA website and choose nonstop routes only, it shows that Lubbock and Tuscon are both gaining nonstop routes to HOU. It may not be announced this Monday, but at least according to SWA own website it will be announced in the near future.

This would be great for TUS and another great option for travelers connecting eastbound, particularly for destinations in the Southeast. IAH is served nearby by UA, but for most of the year its a handful of flights a day on OO and EV RJ's. I was hoping WN would try to do TUS-DAL nonstop with the Wright Amendment restriction no longer a factor and give AA a run for their money on a route they've dominated for years, but anytime TUS gets new service it's a welcome sight.

I would imagine WN would be eager to add more flights to HOU. The airport saw an increase in passenger traffic of 17% in July.

AA dominates the DFW route because they hold the Raytheon and military contracts, not to mention there's an impressive number of AA FFs in Tucson. Years ago there was an AA rez center in town.

I wouldn't be surprised to see WN give it a shot but it'll probably be an addition later on down the road once they cover their main airports.

A bit off-topic for this particular thread, but I was wondering that also.

Will HOU be the next BWI/MDW as their international terminal comes online?

DAL-PDX has already been announced for a 2015 intended start. Will it be published in this next schedule publish?

That was based on being awarded the two gates at DAL that ended up with VX. Not saying DAL-PDX won't happen someday, but probably not with the next schedule release.

This is speculation? I hear the opposite and that the existing trend will continue, although it would make more sense to cut ATL in APR/MAY after the Florida flow peak winds down.

Well don't rule out the fact that WN is completing the contruction of the 5 new gates in the C councourse in DEN. They didn't build them just to have them look pretty in the Colorado sunshine.

I can see some good growth this coming year. There might not be anything much announced on the 8/25 update but long term for sure. I believe WN may take a crack at some smaller markets out of DEN and see how it goes.

As of Fall last year HOU was at 161 daily departures, so it certainly plays a roll similar to that of BWI and MDW. I would expect this to increase once the international terminal is done.

Largest WN stations (in order)
MDW
LAS
BWI
DEN
HOU
PHX
ATL
DAL
MCO
LAX

And IIRC, SAN and STL would be next.

Why would MEX be only a 40% load factor?

And F9 and UA make BIL work just fine, I am sure if WN were to jump in F9 would bail.

I am only talking maybe a flight or two a day to DEN. With over 100,000 population in their metro area, there is some demand there. The business model of WN has changed over the years and nothing is impossible for them anymore.

Tough for Frontier to bail when they've already done so. Frontier hasn't flown DEN-BIL for some time.

Indeed the summer is the busiest time for many airports around the country.

Quoting n471wn (Reply 19):

Taking a look at the schedule for next week Southwest is slightly larger in both daily departures and destinations I have tried to make this as accurate as possible:

LAX:

OAK 14x
SJC 11x
LAS 11x
SFO 10x
SMF 9x
PHX 9x
DEN 7x
MDW 6x
HOU 4x
ATL 3x
RNO 3x
TUS 3x
SLC 3x
STL 3x
ABQ 3x
MCI 3x
BNA 2x
BWI 2x
ELP 2x
AUS 2x
SAT 2x
MSY 2x
OMA 1x
MKE 1x

Total of 24 destinations, 116 departures.

OAK:

LAX 14x
BUR 12x
SAN 11x
LAS 9x
SNA 8x
SEA 7x
PDX 6x
PHX 5x
DEN 4x
MDW 4x
SLC 4x
ABQ 3x
HOU 2x
BOI 2x
GEG 2x
MCI 1x
AUS 1x
BWI 1x

Total of 19 destinations, 104 daily departures.

Quoting raddek (Reply 21):

Some, but the "metro area" of BIL makes even the likes of DSM or ICT look like a big city. It would be neat to see BIL as a WN station though, say maybe BIL-DEN & another flight or two to a place like OAK or LAS.

BIL would be a good add. Sorry Mariner that I didn't look in the schedule to see that F9 isn't on the route anymore. I believe WN could make it work if they wanted to go with a 3 ish flight operation a day. Keep it small but pofitable. They would have the ground side vendored out probably to save on costs,

Funny to remember when WN had 8/9 GEG-SEA and 5 GEG-PDX.

SEA won't happen with Delta coming into the market in November. And PDX held on for longer than SEA because the loads and yields were better but now what QX is up to 8 daily just not going to see it. Plus WN's CASM is tough on these 250 mile routes.

In DEN DL and WN will be swapping two gates. Giving WN the whole lower C wing to cut down on passanger connection times during connecting banks.
Newest rumors are
3 former FL charter Flying Mexican cites will get service with this release.
Guesses are CZM,PRV and IZT .
Also the first themed painted 800 being announced soon.

DL will not move anywhere. The design of the gates in DEN is built for their aircraft that they fly into DEN. To move to other gates on C would require them to do major construction in regards to the fuel pits and where they are located. So this rumor has zero merit to it folks.

Oh my brotha I am a believa!!

TUS-HOU would make sense. Remember that WN began flying IND-HOU sort of out of the blue with FL metal a while back, so anything getting added to HOU is a possibility.

I would love to see some Canuck traffic though be taken by WN in BLI. That would be a great city to open. But I am sure it is not a top priority right now. I have talked of BLI in the past and maybe one day it will happen. Just not on 8/25/2014. lol

As in the MKE thread, the point should probably be made that those routes are in conjunction with Apple Vacations, which is carrying a lot of the risk.

If that is the case, then adding those smaller destinations in Mexico isn't quite a stretch...

CZM, ZIH, and PVR could be possible if WN is, in fact, running flights in conjunction with tour operators like Apple.

Perhaps not. Virtually all of Sun Country's south of the border flying is in conjunction with Apple, although some of that is pure charter (100% Apple risk).

Here's the Apple Vacations schedule for the flights at MKE:

WN must now be showing future routes on the route map ahead of release of schedules because TUS-HOU definitely shows but there is no nonstop service on the route on this new March 7 schedule. Interesting.

So far I see no new routes for SAN on this schedule extension but I do see seasonal freq increases. No blog by Bill yet.

Quick look looks like ATL is losing SJU and all International flying.
Alot of test market flying on Saturday with this release.
MCO,MDW,BWI and DEN seeing a nice build up but ATL is left standing at the door.
Flyguy is of flying check back later
my post are my opinion only and not those of southwest airlines and or airtran airlines.

LOL. No surprise there.

Quoting usflyguy (Reply 41):
CZM, ZIH, and PVR could be possible if WN is, in fact, running flights in conjunction with tour operators like Apple.
Quoting mariner (Reply 42):
Perhaps not. Virtually all of Sun Country's south of the border flying is in conjunction with Apple, although some of that is pure charter (100% Apple risk).

There are 3 reasons that will not happen.
1) Southwest's RES system does not allow a block seat process
2) Southwest does not presently allow tour operators to have direct access to the WN RES system because of security concerns and I do not expect fixing that is a priority given that they are going to a new RES system hopefully before we are all dead from natural causes
3) Southwest has a deal with Funjet as part of Southwest Vacations that does not allow the WN brand to do business with Apple.

This is speculation? I hear the opposite and that the existing trend will continue, although it would make more sense to cut ATL in APR/MAY after the Florida flow peak winds down.

And the coveted ANet "Crystal Ball Award" may be going to enilria this week.
