Lakeland (LAL) Talks With Airline For New Service

Sat Aug 23, 2014 9:48 pm

A writeup in the Lakeland, FL newspaper (The Ledger) states that the airport is in talks with an Orlando based airline that would fly to MEM, PIT, and IND. The unnamed airline would "use one jet, which would seat about 150 people." Any idea who would operate between LAL and those three cities?

Based on it being an Orlando based airline a possibility would be National Airlines (N8). That being said I don't think they have anything in the 150 seat range but, they due have passenger configured 757's

I don't really see the feasibility in this.

That would be ironic, since the original National Airlines served Lakeland from 1934 to 1962. I remember NAL Convair 440s parked at the 1959 built terminal when I was 5-6 years old.

Sorry, it's a very small market that's 35 miles from TPA. Publix's office locations are just off of I-4, easy drive to TPA.
Unsustainable, IMHO.
Good luck to them, however....I'd love to be proved wrong.

I understand this is the conventional wisdom, but I don't understand why. LAL and SFB are essentially the same distance from Disney World, so if SFB can work with appropriate marketing, why can't LAL?

SFB doesn't have TPA so close with the volume of service. Yes DAB is out there to the NE, but it has significantly less service than TPA.

SFB has MCO even closer?

Actually I was thinking of this airline (Orange Air) as well but I couldn't remember the name of it. It seems like the most likely airline from the information provided in the article.

LAL is close to a lot of businesses, Publix, GEICO, O'Reilly Auto Parts, Pepperidge Farm, Advance Auto Parts, Rooms To Go and a new Amazon Warehouse, however these business do not support air travel enough to have service to LAL.

TPA/MCO are close with many options.

Too bad though as it really is centrally located.

Off topic, but I would like to know what is happening with the ex-US Air planes that are stored there now. For the longest time there was just and old Airborne Express A-300 (?), now there are some 737's.

It seems like the proximity of Tampa Bay could, again with the right marketing, be a positive for LAL. Plenty of folks combine some time seeing Mickey with a trip to the beach.

I could see LAL being capable of minimal air service. Even from a legacy. I don't know how much legacies analyze markets like these, but maybe even Frontier would come in with this. They serve St. Augustine with JAX only 30 mins away and DAB 45 mins away.

LAL to PIT/MEM/IND with travel agent backing service to Disney/Universal. All you need is to throw a few busses on runs to the major tourist centers in Orlando and Tampa...it could work.

I'm having flaskbacks to Direct Air!

I'd like to think it will be operated by Orange Air; however they seem to be quite occupied with public charters on their sole MD80 aircraft.

I also think LAL is quite viable. It just needs to get ground transportation to the mouse and I think they have a bright future. I think Disney's Magical Express should be offered to LAL and since its purpose is to hurt Universal it would seem that LAL even more isolates Universal from Disney customers.

If were right and the airline is indeed Orange Air, then they will obtain a second MD80 series a/c.

I hope this operation really takes off (no pun intended)! Always great to see smaller Floridian airports such as LAL receive airline service, unlike the disastrous Florida ExpressJet which existed for a few weeks and then folded.

Polk County Florida last year generated 3,556 PDEWs. We obviously know that our folks are using other airports and who is around us, but with 3,556 PDEWs I would think we could handle 270 seats per day to either ATL or CLT and can fill the seats easily. Our folks will pay more for the service too! The zip code where all those businesses you referenced reside generated 50,000 roundtrip tickets alone.

The proposed service is to MEM, PIT and IND which are oddball choices as to potential demand. An airline operating one airplane will offer very limited service so you can dismiss those 50K business travelers who need frequency and choice on a daily basis. The same with those 3,556 PDEW's. What % are flying to MEM, PIT & IND to potentially offer a viable customer base for a 2 or 3 day a week operation? What public transport options are available at LAL to offer a family choosing LAL so they can visit Orlando and maybe the Tampa Bay area? How easy is it to get to Port Canaveral or Tampa for someone taking a cruise? DirectTravel/Dynamic Airways/SkyKing proved quickly LAL was not sustainable with traffic it generated, not to factor in the damage inflicted by very unreliable flight operations. Could PEX offer nonstop service to PHF? Possibly once they create connections and offer more destination choices but there are not 300+ people a week wanting to fly just to PHF on a once or twice a week frequency. I suspect PEX would plan for service to MCO/SFB and TPA/PIE for an established passenger infrastructure, and a customer base of those traveling to FL and the local market in those cities they may tap into. No one in the Tampa Bay area including SRQ or Orlando/Melbourne/Space Coast are going to drive to LAL for a flight so the market in itself is more limited to a "visit FL on vacation or friends and family" inbound customer than drawing upon a large catchment of local O&D. And don't dismiss the thousands of frequent flyers who are less likely to try out a new airline or service due to their loyalty and benefits of sticking with their airline choices in TPA/PIE, MCO/SFB, SRQ, RSW, JAX and so on. The operation will not be profitable or sustainable. There has not been regular airline service in Lakeland for over 40 years which says a lot, regardless of the population and business growth in Lakeland/Winter Haven/Bartow and Polk County.

You are forgetting that you now have a another big theme park in Winter Park. The vacation market is moving southwest along I-4 these days - more families are looking into rental homes, and most of those are southwest of Orlando proper, especially since they are now splitting their time between Disney and Legoland. Now that airfares to Orlando have crept up to be on par with other routes, there is a new market for discount airfares to secondary airports.
