Nice paint job alright, but the aircraft itself has no appeal. I've seen the 350 here at FRA, had an invitation when they presented her a couple weeks ago, walked through the cabin as well. OK, it has more room in Y on a 9 abreast config. wider seats, all efficient and build for the purpose as it should be. But on a distanmce I will have difficulties, in the future, to tell which aircraft that is flying above. Call it a 767 on steroids or whatever, these modern designs don't have "character"

For passengers it will be OK, as long as they are not suqeezed 10 abreast .

I don't mind the nose, and I think the black surround windshield is distinctive. But what purpose does the black surround serve?

I've heard it's purely aesthetic because the A380-style windows look, well, "less that sleek".

Quoting slinky09 (Reply 41):
As for the comments on the nose etc, that has a pretty similar profile to a 787

No, it really doesn't.

Quoting KarelXWB (Reply 50):
They are comparable.

So, smaller. Is this comparing like with like though? So, the actual outer window surface or the inner passenger cabin surface? The A380 plays games by having a much larger inner, pax cabin surface compared to the size of the actual, viewable window.

I must admit, as a die hard boeing fan, this is one sleek looking a/c, apart from the racoon eyes that is! I cant believe how much it looks like a narrow body at first glance!

If I am not mistaken this is a like with like comparison. The B787 has taller windows, the A350 has wider windows. Overall the B787 window might just be a tad larger, but the difference is negligible.

I think it looks amazing, I love the aircraft itself and Qatar's livery also looks fantastic on this bird!

Quoting JAAlbert (Reply 33):
I'm also wondering if the 350 is higher off the ground than the 787. The 787 seems to squat on its gear.

Exactly, the 787 looks really odd sitting so close to the ground.

For all of those who are moaning about the 'raccoon eyes' (which I personally think look gorgeous along with the nose), here's a photoshop with and without...

http://oi44.tinypic.com/fo2d1e.jpg

I think the black makes the nose look less like the 787, which has a horrid nose.

I know this has been discussed previously at some point, but are the raccoon eyes standard or can airlines opt to go "naked"? After seeing the photoshopped picture, I really like how it looks without the feature. It still looks modern and sleek, but maintains some of the distinct 'Airbus look' passed down from its predecessors, which IMO is a unique and positive trait to carry forward.

I agree with my fans here that the 757-200 ETOPS (with winglets) is perhaps the most attractive and distinctive AC out there. Followed only by the 748 Queen herself. Next for me has to be the 789.

The A350 doesn't do it for me. In fact it looks better without the raccoon eyes from the Photoshop photo above.

I agree that the 'raccoon eyes' make the A350 look a little weird, but unique. The nose reminds me a bit of a Saab 340 nose. I don't like the tail at all as it looks kind of awkward.
I will hold judgement however until I see one in the flesh. I missed the prototype in Sydney last month as I was in hospital unfortunately. Mates who saw it however, were very positive about it's appearance and looks.
I'm not a big fan of the Qatar livery but I do like the colours. A 'reversed' colourscheme would look great in my opinion, with the titles in a metallic grey/silver on a deep maroon / burgundy fuselage.
Cheers,

Maybe they're trying to make the 6 pane window design look more modern/futuristic? The rest of the plane is beautiful, however. Perfect proportions.

The original A350 (or the original XWB, I'm not sure) had only 4 windows, with two big curved ones and two smaller on the sides. At some point Airbus went back to 6 (probably much cheaper when you have a cracked one) but added that black paint to keep the same look.

i totally understand what you are meaning! i am 31 now and already miss the good old days. i am so glad i got to fly the old ilyushins, tupolevs and other real stuff. great was the 707 in iran as well, or the dc-10. a few weeks ago i was on an SP, what a thrill.... or the ILW out of AYT, on a hot summer day, fully loaded with sunburned russians an cargo below...

there is no character to these new designes. i disliked the b787 an do not like the a350. i enjoy every a340 i see, not to mention an il-96 once in a while.

but i guess that's life...

still in the end looking forward to the new plastic jets   and my first 773 trip next week (hope there won't be an acft change to a 77W!!!)...

They are so different. Seriously, apart from them both having 2 engines, a tail, a wing and a fuselage...well we can then say that all big twins were copied from the A300, or the A340 off the IL-86 and so on. Anyway, this topic is about the fully painted plane. What an elegant plane (although i am not fond of the two-tone Qatar livery on this particular craft, or any other, for that matter.

It's not that - it's just that Boeing introduces radical design changes with the Dreamliner, then suddenly Airbus does too with the A350. You can call it a natural evolution, but I see it as a "me too" by Airbus.

My choice for best looking:-

Boeings: 747-400, 777-300 , 767-300, 757-200 + Winglets ... Ugly duckling award has to be the 737 ( horrid nose, stumpy gear, squashed engines - yuk!)

Airbus: A350, A340-600/500, A320 , A380 , A330 .... Ugly duckling award goes to A300/A310 or A340-200 (Engines look too small)

I don't know if QR follows any policy as regards to the naming of aircraft.

Some aircraft are named after people and others after place names.

Most recently, I was parked next to a 777 named 'Gaza'.

Personally, I don't think they look anything alike, but that is my opinion. The tail and tail section is more A380. the only think I would say is similar are the large screens in the flight deck. But then I can say that the Boeing 757/767 copied the A300-600/A-310 in that regard. come on!. Form follows function. Manufactures must respond or loose market share. Yes exactly. Sudantheel is also a border crossing point between Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The area is under dispution with both countries claiming Sudantheel belongs to them. Makes me wonder the significance of naming their first A350 Sudantheel. A cheeky dig at Saudi Arabia maybe

It's strange that AAB did not yet reveal the configuration of the A350. I would guess it would have around 300 seats with 42 J and 250ish economy seats making it an overall larger capacity wise than the current 777-200 Lr.

I think Spaceliner, would more closely reflect the XWB concept, and also looks a bit like a space ship without the blacked out cockpit windows, which make an otherwise very modern aircraft look dated..
