Rumor: WN To Get New Livery?

Sat Aug 30, 2014 4:17 am

The rumor that has been going around on two other threads suggests that WN is getting a new paint job. Two -800s are alleged to have been flown to GEG for painting. Also, its been suggested that WN may have "something big" in October when the Wright Ammedment expires. Possible deliveries in October are 8650 and 8651. Any truth?
My posts/replies are strictly my opinion and not that of any company, organization, or Southwest Airlines.

New basic livery or could this just be a special scheme to celebrate the opening of DAL?

I'm leaning more towards the 2nd option.

I can see a new livery to get away from the dark blue on top. Not doing the interior or pax any favors with a dark color prone to fading in the hot southwest.

Yes they are and in this electronic world, it is amazing it has not leaked out. It is a unique variation of the current livery and all new fonts. That is about all I can say.

Funny, I work for SWA and haven't heard this rumor at all. Highly doubt this is true.

I hope so. I seem to be in the minority here but I think both the old and new WN liveries are just plain awful. Rivals AA's new livery

I never did care for the "canyon blue" top. Also doesn't weather well as others have noted. I think they should go to some scheme with a cream color top, orange bottom and maybe a small red and gold cheat line dividing the two colors. Also, new branding. Just SWA on the tail.

I'm hearing that the shade of blue on top will be changing, a new cheat line, and "Southwest" will be printed on the fuselage above the windows.

I'm such a sucker for tradition or long-held standards. It broke my heart when after so many decades WN changed their livery. And don't even get me started on AA changing their livery

I thought to old paint made it look like something found in a diaper, so the Canyon Blue was a huge improvement. If anything, the name Southwest doesn't fit their broader market any more, but I sure don't see any change there. I'm with the earlier posters and just assuming there will be some special liveries for the opening up of DAL.

It has been said that "love and hate are 2 sides of the same coin". I love how tacky the livery is, it's the worst of, or best of, the 1970's earth tone wall art craze. Helvetica MEDIUM was all the rage at that time too. I would hate to see them do something more modern and sleek. We have plenty of those!
There was a horrible eye sore of a hospital in the West Village in NYC, near my apt. It was part of the old St Vicent's. Everyone wanted it torn down it was so dated looking. The new owners restored it beautifully and now we are all thrilled she's still there. I feel the same about Southwest - sure, a minor spruce is always nice, but I hope we don't lose something we will later miss!

With the current yet distinctive livery of WN getting on in years and a need to hold down costs, I wouldn't be surprised at some revision of it.
Unlike our small community, most people don't care about the livery of an aircraft, so long as not especially ugly and still id's the airline of the plane they are boarding at the gate.

I'm surprised that they're doing it now given the shortage of aircraft they are experiencing. Painting aircraft just tightens them even more I think. However, I'm sure WN does their HW and they know what they're doing.

Like vulindlela744, I also work for Southwest and I have heard no internal rumours concerning a livery change.
Love it or hate it, the canyon blue is very distinctive. In a world of bland eurowhite (which many of you dislike), WN's livery is about as colorful as you can get. WN planes are instantly recognizable at great distances. Just look at an aerial view of any major American airport and you can immediately point out the Southwest planes and gates. More importantly, the general public can also easily indentify and relate to the Southwest branding. As the old saying goes "if it ain't broke...don't fix it!"
Another thing to consider is what effect will new branding have on employee morale. All WN workgroups are currently without contracts. Management wants serious concessions from the employees. The drive is to lower costs across the board. To cut spending in all areas and departments.
So, to launch a major rebrand and repaint the fleet may not be a smart move at this time. Instead of rallying the employees, it might just drive a wedge deeper between the conflicting parties.

If they are indeed rebranding, they wouldn't do so unless the new livery

reduced costs with maintenance and fuel burn. I suspect one feature

of the new livery would be a single color for the engine nacelles or

no color at all, just standard lt grey

Although I wasn't with the company when the "Spirit" livery came out, I've heard that our company for the most part is pretty good at keeping things tight lipped.

IMHO we might very well see a revised livery to go along with the "Evolve" interior. However I've noticed that the "Evolve" interior doesn't seem to be aging that well neither.

Lastly, I noticed Nose 8647 arrived into IND the other day, perhaps she too was unpainted?

I'm open for a new design, but the current one on WN looks stunning. How anyone can say the current blue is hideous is beyond me. Blue is pretty and it isn't the typical worldwide white. Bottom line, it looks awesome in it's current scheme.

On an aside, the AA tail also looks great. Again, some American pride stuck on there and it isn't plain white. What's there not to like? Nothing. It looks fantastic.

I like the current scheme. From a distance, in any light or weather conditions, you still know that it is a SW bird. I also liked the "mustard rocket", as I know it. Once again it was a memorable, and easily identifiable scheme.

Silver one was costly with trying keep the shine on it.
Once it's cycle came time for over haul the shiny exterior was more costly.
So it became Primer ONE for a few years until canyon blue replaced the ugly gray with a read 25 yr logo on the nose.
As for a new paint job Rumors are Lone Star one being applied to a 800 for giving DALLAS Texas the freedom to move around the country.
Other rumor is Hopper ONE to promote dish tv is coming also.

Boeing paints all new build 737s in GEG so where is the speculation on that ? Currently 800 series aircraft cannot go to every city WN serves. So WN would only do an 800 special livery if they could go to all cities WN serves.

And for me personally I would make the "A" in the AirTran style but in no way do I think anyone in WN management cares about the AirTran brand as it is really just gone and is Southwest. I just like the style and effect).

No way the bottom one. I like the top one (though I would not "two tone" the engines) but the problem is how the beige/gold top ages in the sun. It could end up looking terrible. Whatever they do it needs to age well (and I have seen the canyon blue tops age terribly). The blue us certainly distinctive and you can easily tell a Southwest flight in the sky and at the airport because of it.
