How Is CX Doing From EWR?

Sun Aug 31, 2014 7:54 pm

CX 899 leaves from B terminal at 0115. That's a really late flight. Why so late? UA goes afternoon to HKG. How is CX doing?

It leaves so late partially because it provides good connections through HKG.

CX already has a lot of lift from JFK. Why so eager to do a proper connection from EWR?

Guess UA isn't doing the right time even though it's a full flight daily.

Because for many people EWR is far more convenient than JFK? UA has been flying EWR-HKG for years, I think they will know if their times work or don't work, and believe it or not every flight has to be run at the exact same time either!

The difference between CX and UA is that UA's hub is in Newark and is targeted toward O&D and North American connections while CX is giving people connections to Asia/Australia/etc.

UA's flight also allows it to connect to its own metal to SIN and SGN from HKG (not sure if GUM, too), while CX's flight arrives just in time for morning connections to China and Southeast Asia.

The HKG-end of the flights clearly shows UA is mostly targeting HKG-bound passengers, while CX is timing its flights to maximize regional connections throughout Asia Pacific.

EWR flight, arrival times at HKG:
CX: 5.05 am - unlimited onward regional connections
UA: 7.10 pm - too late for many regional connections

EWR flight, departure times from HKG:
UA: 10.25 am - limited feed from Asia, too early
CX: 5.40 pm - unlimited regional connections

It makes for an excellent overnight flight. By 115 AM you're def tired and ready to sleep on the plane.

Plus a 777-full and two 737-full of connecting pax to/from SIN, SGN, and GUM, respectively. Admittedly they get spread through the flights to EWR, ORD, and SFO.

It does make you wonder if UA will ever bury the hatchet and let SQ handle HKG-SIN. That flight can't be making much money, especially when fares are usually lower than the LCCs.

Having said that, it's a great way to accrue KrisFlyer miles since at those fares you can earn 100% KF miles while on SQ the lowest fares only give you 10%.

Surprised no one mentioned slots at EWR. Or lack thereof this late at night.

I said the same thing about the flight from BOS.

That 3 inch recline in Y should make for a wonderful start to the flight.

I wonder if sufficient business at the pointy end to and from SIN is making this tag-on work for UA. Otherwise, yes, there's really little point and could end the way BKK did for the airline.

UA-SQ really don't have a relationship, so not I don't see them doing so.

UA runs the segment primarily for 2 reasons - its needs premium capacity out of SIN - C class on the NRT is often booked very heavy, and also UA has for more than a decade used the SIN down time to do maintenance check packages on the aircraft.

Also SIN is growing in importance to UA. Late 2013, they grew the call-center there, the only fully UA staffed one in the region. (Tokyo is partially staffed by vendor).

CX is doing fine on the EWR. Good enough in fact to be thinking about additional capacity there at some point, although the new BOS flight will take some pressure off that.

I purchased PE and was lucky enough to get upgraded to J in both legs of this trip. It was the best sleep I ever got on a plane.

Oh, I'm just one of those people who can't sleep out in the open when other people are around. Can't even do it in the current AA Flagship suite.

CX's LAX flights also leave at midnight or later. The flight I took arrived in HKG at about 5:30 a.m. after flying for something like 16 hours. It was quite the flight! I was transiting onto Bali, so I spent about 4 hours exploring the airport before flying out again. I was quite literally the only person in the airside terminal at 5:30 a.m.. It was a bizarre feeling, but great fun.

Yes 2 of CX 4 LAX departures are midnight ones.

I recently returned from KUL via CX. I am a fan of such schedules.

I find the midnight departure perfect for long sleep. I zonked out for a good 8-hours enroute to HKG and felt very well in Malaysia without any jetlag.

The timing of the early morning arrival into HKG offer great regional connection opportunities, after a nice breakfast at the F class Wings lounge especially.

That was the best part, I don't have any status with them at all. I got a great deal roundtrip in PE was $1986 JFK-KUL and BKK-JFK. When they downgraded me from PE to Y on the BKK-HKG sector they offered me a one class upgrade so I used that JFK-HKG and when I asked about a bulkhead in PE on the return they already printed a J boarding pass for me. It was a total suprise!! I think they might have been accomodating one class upgrades form E and tried to keep a family together.

My arrival from JFK was pretty similar, just a few people spread out among the terminal, it was dark and eerie.
