Hainan Airlines To Start MAN-PEK?
Reports elsewhere of a 4 x weekly MAN-PEK service to be introduced from 12th May 2015, using A330-200s. Can we expect an official announcement soon?

Same. Do many people in Europe - particuarly the UK - even know who Hainan Airlines are? They don't even serve London!

this is great news for MAN as last year 53,000 pax flew MAN-PEK-MAN and another 49,000 did PVG so with a direct link to mainland China finally on the horizon, this route has potential to see good loads from the on set.

Don't expect the city's billboards and local newspapers to be covered in ads. Hainan is no Emirates!
They will be the bottom feeder and dump the lowest fares on the market. This is how they build market share.
Good thing is they will keep CX in check for China destinations.

Is there enough room in the market for a MAN-PVG as well?

Both Hainan Airlines and Air China have applied for slots at MAN for the 2015 period. but have hit a stumbling block called " bi-lateral agreements"

Air China have the issue of they operate 2x daily to LHR and a summer service to LGW, so would opening up a 3rd UK port work?
Being a member of "Star Alliance" it would bring some advantages to the PAX's,
Also speaking to Air China staff here in Beijing - LGW is not preforming very well at the moment.
Both airlines are looking at using A332 on this route. But in the long run only one player is going to do it.
We have been here before many times - so we just have to wait and see.

Is there enough room at MAN for both CX HKG and HU PEK? Would hope so.
HU isn't in any alliance, yet. Any chance we'd see interline / codeshare with BE for connections on the MAN side?

Exactly, which is why I think Air China would be a better choice of airline than Hainan. Air China also serve more destinations from PEK than Hainan do and with a slightly 'thinner' route like MAN, I think you would need to go for an airline with better connecting opportunities.

Air China cannot compete with HU on the cost structure. HU can offer cheaper airfares and, while we do not know if the timing of the flight will be optimized for domestic connections, HU occupies the entire T1 at PEK flying to 40 destinations across China covering major 1st 2nd and 3rd tier cities.

So do EK EY QR TK and SQ, which are light years ahead of CX and often offer cheaper fares (except SQ), but HU has no competition for Northern and inner China and can offer low fares so they can carve out a nice share of the market for themselves.

With well over 100,000 passengers currently routing over other hubs to HKG and, according to MAN, approx one third of the total number of UK passengers going to Beijing being from Nothwest England, it's not so much as "hoping" as expecting.

George Osbourne has said Hainan has got the route rights today and its mentioned on the BBC Northwest twitter feed

You need to understand that the Chinese aviation/airline industry is largely smoke and mirrors with a variety of pretty and not pretty colours!
They are not truly independent commercial operators but rather regional divisions of various state and regional governmental agencies and of the CAAC.
All four major groupings are tasked to project / fill differing market and political goals and targets.
Air China are the main player ex Beijing and domestically used to project Han supremacy to the likes of Lhasa and Urumqi as well as primary international routes and of course are the *A carrier.
China Eastern are primarily the international carrier for Shanghai and a Skyteam player BTW Shanghai Airlines are a subsidiary mainly a regional carrier
China Southern are pretty much the lower cost carrier (Queue used by non government travellers) however also have regional bases in Guangzhou and a base in Urumqi where they operate a number of Middle Eastern connections serving the islamic communities (also low cost markets) also a Sky team player
Hainan are tasked internationally with serving the thinner routes specifically the likes of Brussels, Boston ,Toronto and now as seems to be imminently announced Manchester.
Further they are likely to be the preferred Oneworld carrier but only if agreement with Cathay can be attained.
Hong Kong is a very different matter that IS a commercial market

It's quite disingenuous to call Hainan a "bottom feeder."
I've only travelled on them 4 times, but each time has been flawless, in modern, clean aircraft.
A recent presentation I attended was both professional and impressive. I appreciate Skytrax is held in varying levels of esteem on a.net., but Hainan made great play of the fact they are a SkyTrax 5 star airline. There seems to be a dynamism and pride you don't necessarily see in, for example, China Eastern, who I found barebones functional and robotic.
Boarding a Hainan wide body feels like how a Virgin Asia might have been, in both colour/decor and service.
Their emulation of Emirates in J class features is a good thing IMO; Limo service to the airport I can't even get on my beloved BA, yet Hainan throw it in to the J class offering.
They are not perfect, but I think you do them a disservice in castigating them as bottom feeders.

Being widely reported on other aviation sites and even heard mentioned on the local news here in Manc...It rather seems like this one is a goer? If so great news, and MAG finally got their target of mainland China service!

China Easterm is weak in international network;
China Southern is 100% not "lower cost" then any other major airlines in China;
Hainan has many thin internation routes ex-PEK because in most case, they are not allowed to open city-pairs which CA serves.
