AeroMexico Begins 80th Anniversary Celebrations

Tue Sep 02, 2014 12:33 pm

AeroMexico has begun its 80th anniversary celebrations with a "new" 80's vintage style ad campaign celebrating its first destination ever: ACA. A special livery is expected to follow shortly.

AeroMéxico 80 years??? Well there was an airline with the name Aeronaves de México who was founded in 1934 but this company declared it as bankrupt in April 1988.

A new company with the name AeroMéxico was founded in 1988 and taken over most of the fleet and personal.

Aeronaves de México dba AeroMéxico and Aerovías de México also dba AeroMéxico have always celebrated the September 1934 founding date, decade after decade in the same fashion as Compañía Mexicana de Transportación Aérea CMTA dba Mexicana and Compañía Mexicana de Aviación CMA also dba Mexicana celebrated their 1921 founding date. Many others do the same as SCADTA/Avianca.

You are correct, current Aerovias de Mexico was founded in 1988 and it is not 80 years old no matter what they say. Aeronaves de Mexico would turn 80 if it was still in operations, but the government closed it back in 1988 after transferring some assets to a new entity.

There is no need to be so fussy ... Airlines (and not only airlines) often claim themselves being heir to older companies ... airlines often inherit landing rights, slots, fleet, personel from other older airlines and rise from the ashes from their former incarnations. If we all got so strict, the "new" CAI (Alitalia) could not trace its roots to Alitalia (1946), not even Iberia could trace its roots back to 1927 and there are many other examples.
