Beautiful aircraft! I really hope the -9 has a better operational run than the -8, considering these are such revolutionary aircraft.

Just curious- where is the -9 fleet going to be positioned?

UA has or will have pilot bases in IAH, LAX and SFO by next spring. Early on, they will be flying routes such as LAX-MEL. During the ramp up phase, it will do domestic runs, pitch in on a CTU run or two and a few other international stops.

The plan calls for no United Global First - just CO-origin BusinessFirst.

Nice! The proportions work so well on the 789 as compared to the 788, which is still a lovely aircraft, just not as striking as the 789.

While a fairly standard picture, the beauty of the shot is of course being in the right place at the right time, and most important of all, being ready for the shot!

Well done, and well deserved self-promoting words

I'm generally not a fan of the extended fuselage aircraft (such as the 757-300). But I have to say, when it comes to the 787, the longer version does look better. I think the 787-8 looks a little clumsy. This has much better proportions. Going to purchase a model of it tomorrow.

Just out of curiosity, why does it seem that amongst US based airlines, United seems to be the launch customer for Boeing?

They were the first operator of 767 and 777 as well. 757 was first flown by Eastern....

American and Delta never seem to be launch customers for anything....

Well I believe in the case of the 787 the launch customer was going to be Continental. Then became United through other means.

I've been around SEA a lot recently and have seen the airplane several times. To my eye, the proportions are much more pleasing than the -8.

Actually IIRC the US launch customer was going to be Northwest, but they became Delta and Delta deferred their orders.

AA was the launch customer for many types on which today's aviation industry was founded, especially the DC-3. AA was also launch customer for the DC-6, DC-7, L-188 Electra and DC-10.

DL was launch customer for the DC-9.

DL has made it pretty clear through public statements on earnings calls, etc., that it doesn't want to pay leading-edge prices for bleeding-edge technology (e.g., Richard Anderson calling the 777X "experimental"). Now that the 787 has improved and prices are starting to come down (thanks especially to the A330neo), I'd expect DL to give the 787 a fair shake. I would say the same for the A350, but I think the A330neo has basically knocked the A350 off the table for DL.

AA was in such a mess leading up to bankruptcy that I doubt it was in a position to handle new-technology aircraft, either financially or operationally. Obviously, things are much better now -- but Doug Parker and company strike me as a risk-averse bunch who wouldn't jump on new aircraft types just for newness's sake. They already have 787s on order (with first delivery soon, too!), but I think they may also prefer the A330neo to the A350 more for financial reasons than anything about the A350 itself.

That's how the plane gets such greater fuel efficiency!

The UAL 787-9 is gorgeous no way around it.

Why did UAL fly it from Everett to SEA? That's a lot of fuel for a what, five mile hop?

Congrats to Boeing, UA, and GE Engines

BTW IMO the 4-wheel main gear looks a bit short from the side... I know it is more than adequate, but I think 777 style gear with 6 wheels would look better / more appropriate on this frame, especially side on with the extra row of wheels. How many wheels will the 787-10 have on its main gear? I could not imagine how a stretch of the -9 would look side on with just 4 wheels... The wheels in this pic remind me of a 767 with the bogy just hanging the opposite way

UA is now doing their indoc in SEA. While it would be a lot of fuel to get the plane up for five minutes, it's a lot less than ferrying it to MCO for indoc which CO (and sCO post-merger) did for years.

CO was the North American launch customer but Northwest was to take the first deliveries as they were slated to receive some of the early production birds, followed by a bit of a gap before the remainder of their deliveries. CO didn't want those airplanes, and apparently, neither does DL or anyone else, because Boeing is having a lot of trouble finding suitors for those heavy '87s.

In the total series of three shots, I find 1 and 2 to show the most beautiful aircraft flying right now in commercial aviation. Up to now it's been the 345 or 332, but the 789 takes the cake. The only thing better than this would be a more colorful livery, but it has to retain that wavy line down the side.

I wonder if anyone could photoshop the red/orange house colors from Boeing's 748 launch onto the 789. That would be a real stunner IMO.

Unchanged from the 788 and 789. It's MTOW will be the same as the 789 at 252.65t.

I an anticipating that the LAX-MEL payload on a timetable day will be ~ 31t

our engineering crews have in the past taken delivery of the airplanes I'm no longer sure what the procedure is right now.

As someone who almost exclusively flys United, but has yet to fly on a 787, these photos really upset me! I don't know when I will get my butt on one - but if business doesn't provide me with the opportunity, then I will just buy my own ticket. The pictures are pure airplane pornography! What an amazing body

Too bad the BF seat won't be anything special.
