Then why keep a name that is associated with some of the worst disasters of all time?

JAL - Dump it.
UAL and AA - Dump it.
KAL - Dump it.
Etc., etc.

Those airlines all have long histories and strong international brand recognition. Air Florida had neither of those.

Would you say the same if someone attempted to revive Valujet?

Nope

I mentioned this (now regrettably) in the PIT thread - where I assume this was picked up from - yesterday simply because it was an item related to Pittsburgh that was mentioned up by a legitimate news source. Opined then it was bogus.

The only far reaching possibility I see is that this may be the same outfit as Florida Express Jet. The common theme is the use of Swift Air 734s.

I wonder which logotype 'Air Florida' or 'air florida' they'll use.

We'll know they're serious when they announce C.Edward Acker as CEO a dieux. What was the old saying - their wasn't an airplane finance deal he couldn't hustle.

I suppose if airflorida.com is taken, it's a great idea for a start-up to use the Colombian ccTLD instead. Oh well, at least it reduces the risk of people getting scammed by a website that looks like it was written by the Nigerian prince who still hasn't wired me the millions of dollars he promised me last century.

I would love to see that scheme fly again! It was one of my favourites when their DC10's used to come to Gatwick in the 80's. Their scheme would look cool on pretty much any airframe today and call me bad taste but that would be awesome on a 777 favourite frame. So if anyone can do artist impression then share it please!
Good luck to them and anyone else with balls to try and start up and lets give em a break!!

As much as I would love to see some old brands return, I highly doubt this is real.

Now what would be nice to see in this branding would be some new C Series, some Q's and if they really need a WB, then a 787 which would be a hell of a lot better than a MD-11.

Using GYY for Chicago? I don't remember the last time that was successful for anyone..

Doesn't Allegiant serve GYY? I think they could make it work because it is an alternative to the better-known Chicago airports and the landing fees are probably cheaper, allowing them to have a better chance of it working. I also think this is great for the city of Gary. As far as I know, it is a short hop to Chicago.

At first glance this seems to be some college guy's idea of a fantasy airline. If one were to start-up an airline with historical ties to Tampa Bay, wouldn't National Airlines with the Sun King logo be much better? Even decades later the Air Florida name still evokes that Palm 90 "we're going down Larry" stigma.

If Air Florida 2015 were to materialize, I'm sure the Pinellas County officials would be doing cartwheels. The last time I visited PIE it was still a sleepy terminal with a decided 1960s or 70s look and feel.

I would love to see another Air Florida but it's hard not to laugh just looking at their website. While I was always behind the new PEX, their media releases and proposed strategies made sense instead of going off naming contracts and announcing the use of a financially obsolete aircraft for domestic service.

I hope I'm wrong but this isn't taking off.

SLC could do with a little fare lowering since WN jumped ship to DEN. Hell the original Western was building an HQ building here at the time of the merger with DL and made LAX a secondary hub once SLC was viable and fully operational. A320's, A321's and a few A319's would do nicely to some of the biggest markets. But thats just me, and I cant find a buyer for a semi-solid plan like that, hell, people are looking to burn money on an MD-11 out of Florida...

Loads were fine on GYY-SFB, but package sales were atrocious. Having lived there in the past, most people in GYY's catchment area that are going to Orlando have timeshares there. This means that G4 can forget about a single penny of that all-important hotel revenue from most potential GYY-SFB users. Furthermore, many choose to drive even though it's a very long day in the car, and it's a family tradition for some to drive, so G4 had to compete with that as well.

Should G4 retry GYY with AZA or LAS once the runway expansion is complete (they haven't ruled it out), I could see it working because people there don't own timeshares in Arizona or Vegas like they do in Orlando.

The National Airlines name is currently being used by a Florida charter carrier with DoD ties. The Sun King was last used by Southeast Airlines; I don't know who currently owns the rights.

Funny thing with those timeshares. They might own it in Orlando, but they can just as well exchange points with the timeshare company and hit Vegas or Arizona just as easily.

I hope their business skills are ahead of their language skills -

'Air Florida Will (Of Course) Focus On Service In, To And From Our Namesake State, But Will Also Offer Point-To-Point Service Between Destinations In The Northeast And Midwest. We’re Currently In The Process Of Negotiating With Destination Airports, And Are Proposing To Serve.'

Like all of you, I'm not on the hook financially for this business venture, so for pure entertainment I sure hope this is not a hoax. (Which it probably is)

But assuming it's not... I'm surprised anyone would want to give the Air Florida brand a rebirth. The name does not hold much nostalgia, like Eastern for instance. And if memory serves me correctly, Air Florida did not exactly leave a glorious legacy... What next, a new Valujet rebirth five years from now?

That said, if they want to operate domestic MD11 pax flights I say have at it!

Quoting Yflyer (Reply 24):
