After seeing the photo of Heart Two above, I really really like the blue color they chose. Above the window in 1F you can see the heart logo someone was referring to in another thread. I kinda wish that was bigger! However someone also mentioned a logo on the belly. I bet that heart is repeated there are well.

The shock is over. It's definitely grown on me. Looking forward to seeing the corporate logo that emerges out of this.

Cheers

Didn't see any mention of this upthread, but apparently it is named Heart Two

If you look closely, you'll see "Heart Two" is N8645. Perhaps, the original plane, N8642, is "Heart One"? Or could N8642 be something different and this photo was a controlled leak by WN?

Oh god no, although change the blue for white and add a bit of orange and you'll get yourself a decent iberia livery.

If I'm not mistaken N793WN and N794WN were revealed as Spirit One and Spirit Two back when that livery was introduced. I'm assuming they will have 2 planes parked nose-to-nose tomorrow at the media presentation.

It's still colorful and striking, but now for the wrong reasons. The class, style, and charm of the previous WN liveries is long gone with this cartoonish rebrand. Just stupid.

I'm good with the blue. It would be much worse if they went with the trashy and overused eurowhite. That tail though.

LOL, this is the first thing I thought of too.

Then I thought, what does this livery really remind me of, and then it hit me. It would be more appropriate for some kind of gaudy cheap charter airline from the UK or EU to Spain/Med/Canaries.

Can't say i'm a massive fan of the typeface for the titles, it reminds me of Walmart! To be perfectly honest, I don't think i'm a massive fan of the whole livery at all. Having said that, i've thought the same thing about other new liveries that over time have grown on me, i'm sure it will look a lot better in the right light :P

Thumbs up to SW for retaining the blue and not going down the dreaded eurowhite road though!

I am quiet sure that the person (or persons) who designed such new liveries (for example Iberia, American Airlines, Finnair, China Eastern) get a nice amount of money as a big thank you.

Sometimes it takes years to develop an image (regardless of a "good" or "bad" but a strong image) but it can take only a few seconds to destroy it.

The original livery with "SOUTHWEST" on the tail and windows outlined in white remains to be the strongest and most characteristic livery IMO and there was no need to replace it.

It´s like replacing the current livery of Lufthansa by a woshy-washy design with a crane located in away on the tail cut back by 37% and dislocated. There is one thing called "branding" and changing a brand should be only an option for important reasons but not temporary fashion IMO.

OK, I have a very conservative and classic view towards airline-liveries.

I like how everyone said in the other thread "Oh I work for WN and there has been no mention of a new livery" and BOOM! Seems like they will make the official announcement tomorrow. So much for being a spcial employee and finding out on a.net before your actual company!

In an environment where rumors fly around the system faster than the planes, and the smallest announcements always start as rumors over-hyped as "you'll-remember-where-you-were-when-you-heard-it", yes it was shocking that there wasn't a peep about it. If you followed those earlier threads, however, you see everyone finally come around to expect that a new livery is coming Monday.

And by the way, Airliners.net has always been my source for news, rumors and speculation before official announcements from WN.

So Southwest goes 30 years before changing from the variations of Orange...to the Canyon Blue...that one doesn't even make it to 15 years before it's out the window. Man, this really isn't Herb's airline anymore if they have $$ to burn on a crappy paint scheme.

That picture makes it look a lot better. I like it more now that I see that the blue is darker than it looked in the first pictures. Even though I'll miss that original Canyon Blue livery, I'm glad Southwest kept their basic image. The tail is similar to what it was, the blue is almost the same, and the plane overall looks good. Plus, since I really don't like the split-schimitars, the picture that doesn't show them makes the plane look better!

Overall, good job Southwest, glad to see a rebrand go well for once.

So this darker blue will be less susceptible to fading than the current canyon blue? I like the current much better but suppose they're trying to look more grown up and business like rather than whimsical and discounted.

I feel this livery doesn't connect with the newly refreshed interiors though... these primary crayola colors remind me of WN in the early 90s when they were using the nautical flag symbols in their branding and uniforms and the polos, khaki shorts, and white sneaker uniforms were at their height.

So...

Does anyone know how these got leaked? Usually companies like WN are very strict about keeping this sort of thing a secret until they're ready to announce it.

I suspect that there is a furious investigation going on at WN now and someone is going to get canned.

Quoting usflyguy (Reply 132):

What is Southwest's mission and what colors/design would have fit it? It's basically the same colors and design as before but with the red not on the belly and the name on the fuselage instead of the tail.

It's a related design. There is certainly some brand continuity here. It's not nearly as drastic as the AA re-do. But I really am not a fan of the new corporate logo font. I think that that font and all-caps lettering were part of their core brand image and I don't think it needed to be changed.

It is still, however, quickly and easily recognized as a WN 737.

Yep! And relatively simple. A review of the security cameras in the hanger bay within the time period these pics could have been taken to see who could in the area the pics were taken from. Then a review of the people around the hanger with the same time stamp and then interviews of the know people and.... voila! A chain of people that lead to the person that snapped the pics and then discipline those that they can or need to (it may not be possible to directly affect the picture taker).

I am not sure if I like it or not but that does not really matter. I am wondering if this pain weighs less. I am sure the specific mixture probably costs less and the time to prep and paint is likely less too.

I read above that it was test on focus groups and surveys were sent out. I suspect this is true but if they actually allowed "the most popular" to "win" and that is why they selected it, I think it is always a mistake. Focus groups and polls most often produce mediocre material, average things, and seldom truly good or great things. But often the corporate fear of failure requires such things.

A couple of interesting comments on the Dallas Morning News aviation blog :

"This is dreadful. It looks like it was painted by a deranged clown."

But then:

"One needs but to recall the all-out roll of the dice by Braniff on Calder-designed planes"

Flying Colors had artistic value.

And no, I don't think anyone's going to get fired for leaking these photos. When people stop expressing an interest is when Southwest needs to worry.

Wish they had kept the gold instead of the new taxi-cab yellow. But that font is Godawful! It's so . . . sloppy looking. It's so blurred against the windows--worse than on other airlines that do the billboard titles--I think because it's white (why add yet another color into an already busy mix?) against a dark background, and the windows are dark. Blech.

The awful red and yellow is the worst part of the design - even worse than the stupid titles. Put the titles back above the windows, change that awful primary red/yellow/blue visual progression clash, and then we'll talk. It hurts the eyes and actually does make American's redo look better. In my opinion, this is far worse than the new American livery. Far worse.

I think it's awful. Unlike Frontier, they don't seem to know how to do a good refresh (although it has taken Frontier many attempts).

The livery looks boring, but the font is just wrong. It looks like it has been made on Microsft Paint in about 10 minutes. I could imagine it on the side of a coach...

Quoting AviationAware (Reply 176):

That's true, could have been much better though.

The more I look at it the more I think it looks like a livery on a new Mediterranean airline that ends up going bust.

The billboard titles suffer the same fate as AA's new livery—the windows look like bullet holes in the side of the plane.

And I've nothing against billboard titles, per se. I think Pan Am's billboard livery was one of its best. But the planes they used it on could handle it appropriately.

I mean.. Really?

The white space in the tail is not that large.

I like the fuselage and I like the colors on the tail, but I do not like the tail pattern. I also do not like how there is nothing written on the tail. I thought that was sort of a WN trademark - titles on the tail, not the fuselage. The winglets look cool. At least it is not something white.

Did they really settle on Calibri for the font? It looks OK, I guess, but I would prefer something else. I don't like that they settled for the Microsoft default. I also wish the letters were outlined by a thin to medium red line.

Looks a LOT better in this photo. Loving the font for the Heart Two titles. The blue is fantastic, if a bit Pepsi-ish.

I'm still calling this Burger King One, though. All I can think of is a BK cheeseburger and a Pepsi when I look at this livery

IMO, this new livery COULD be OK, but the "ketchup and mustard" colors need to be muted. Awful for an airline that wants to be taken seriously.
