Macquarie AirFinance Orders 40 CS300 Jets

Bombardier Commercial Aircraft announced today that a wholly owned affiliate of Macquarie AirFinance has signed a firm purchase agreement for 40 CS300 jetliners and has taken options on an additional 10 CS300 aircraft.

Fantastic news! This is a the A-list order the programs needed. It's a real good sign to see more lessors taking an interest. The chatter that I mentioned in the CSeries general thread about this order came true. Let's see if the rumour about two Chinese operators gets confirmed as well. BBD execs mentioned it at the CIBC conference.

There's a new program update video on cseries.com A salesmen is introduced by Rob Dewar and he clearly mentions 'firm order' when referring to the Macquarie order

How can this be considered A-list? According to their site they are a leasing firm that from what I can see specialises in A320s/737s and has 2 A330s and 2 B777s. It's not like we re talking about ILFC or Aercap

It is a very welcomed order and I d be happy to see them placed but this is not the momentum that will give the programm air to breathe I m afraid. Hope I ll be proven wrong

Its an established leasing from the Western World. Since Macquarie does not operate aircraft their whole sale dept is now selling the CS300 to their existing or prospective clients. This mean even more clients twill be approached, more sales pitch will be delivered, and clients that were reluctant on a long term CSeries commitment (buy) can now commit to a short/mid term commitment (lease). The same happened when Falko ordered 24 tentative CS100. They have 60+ ARJ / BAE-146 aircrafts with a few customers, and the CS100 is targeting this market. Now Falko is selling those birds to their customer.

That being said, leasing companies might chase the same clients than BBD does so in a way it creates more competition... but at the end of the day its positive.

Smaller leasing company that are trying to growth in the shadow or ILFC/Aercap must distinguish themselves and take more risks. We saw such a move by Macquarie. The big leasing will only jump aboard the Cseries program once the operator base will growth with enough world-class airlines.

I d love to drive the Opel but I d pick the SLK if they were giving them away anyday

I would consider LX and KE "A-list" airlines. However, I think you're right. We had the same kind of anticipation for the 748i, how we thought it would gain more orders after EIS. It did, don't get me wrong, but not the kind of numbers everyone was hoping for.

Its a shame, too. The 748 is the most beautiful widebody and the CSeries is the coolest looking narrowbody since Concorde.

To be honest, I don't think BBD particularly cares about an "A-List" order at this time. They want to sell frames, period. If they were to get a very large order from, for instance, a top American or European airline, that'd be great, but it's not that big of a deal as long as they're selling the planes.

It is pretty much of a big deal, many of the orders in BBDs CSeries order book are pretty sketchy. A high profile anchor customer with sterling reputation and high reliability would do a lot for this program right now. Swiss and Korean are all good and fine, but the rest of the orders is not of great quality. Many orders are lessors, and lessors need customers that run the type in the first place or they won't take the planes (no white tails). Some other orders are from startups or conditional on some wild fantasies (like getting Toronto City Centre expansion approval).

This program needs a customer with substance much more than it needs pure numbers.

Not it's not a given. It could have been a lessor from Russia such as Ilyushin (that already ordered CS300). With the current political and economical situation that order is shaky at best. Or a lessor from China where the economic situation could change dramatically due to real estate speculation, etc.

Macquarie is an established lessor (2006), with established customers (60+ including SouthWest, Frontier, ,JetBlue, United, ) . They have 120 B737 / 320A narrow bodies so they know very well the market for these. Yet they choose to order CS300 instead of MAX and NEO. Thats tells a lot.

Wow some people have a lot of time for nitpicking. Money is money. Order is an order. The program needed orders for confidence and that is what they have got. I am pretty sure this leasing firm has a client already lined up for these aircraft. If it is a "blue chip airline" that has ordered the aircraft, a lot of ink has been wasted.
