Volcano Erupts In Japan- Flights Diverted

Sat Sep 27, 2014 8:17 am

Mt. Ontake, on the border of Gifu and Nagano right smack dab in the center of Honshu, is erupting. No effects are being felt in Tokyo and the ash cloud isn't that bad but flights are being diverted around the cloud. I dont have any data though because i'm outside. Anyone have any more information?

According to the news there are 8 injured people and an ash cloud of 3km height. (with the height of the mountain, that should reach 5/6km up in the sky). 3 prefectures around Nagano will be affected by the ash cloud.

Pretty impressive video: here

According to the flight information at JAL there are no cancellations into the Nagoya airports.

Amazingly hikers on the mountain captured it in tweets and on camera, and there are reports of some missing presumed dead in addition to the injuries. Take a scroll down here to see some filming!

AY tweeted that they are flying normally but monitor the eruption in case they should cancel flights to Japan. I would think that KIX and NGO are in the danger zone.

What impressed me as strange is that those flights from northern Japan to Tokyo, seemingly being not affected by this eruption, in real deviate hundred miles west of usual course. What's that?

Oh ANA82, where are you going?

One woman confirmed dead, according to NHK. I don't trust NHK at all but for this kind of thing it's believable.

Where'd it go? It shows nothing now.

The Japan Meteororological Agency provides the following information:

Warning level 4 (out of 5); prepare to evacuate.

Check this Volcanic Ash Advisory Text (relevant to aviation)

Who is evacuating? There isn't much around that area.

Some of the video I saw showed the ash cloud at around 15,000-20,000 feet. If this thing gets any worse we could have some serious issues at NGO if the wind starts blowing that way.

PHX787, ANA82, Sapporo-Haneda on that day flew via Sado, Nagoya, Kowa(XMC), and Oshima(XAC). For the first time
in my life I saw a flight from the Northern Japan follow the approach route for those from the west. You can playback this
on flightradar24 for next few days.

PWMRamper, for the time being there seems almost nothing to worry about but keep on access to the News to come.
It's a very nice season to visit Japan.

The warning levels refer to people such as hikers, not towns and communities.
The warning levels are:
2 Do not approach the crater
3.Do not approach the volcano
4.prepare to evacuate = if you are hiking in the area, for your safety, descend.
5. Evacuate
