Emirates To Start DFW A380 Service Today

Wed Oct 01, 2014 10:38 am

Today EK221 / EK222 will be upgraded to A380, replacing the 777-200LR.

This.

Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar.

Without a doubt. An Emirates A380 is too much aircraft for this route. The 77W would've done just fine.

Yes, but I am happy. At least no bone crunching 10 abreast 17 inch width 77W seating.

Clearly EK doesn't think so.

When I was in Dallas last year, I was surprised to only see them operate the 77L.

The EK flight status page should refer to DFW as Dallas/Fort Worth and not "Dallas". I'm sure the DFW board and the City of Fort Worth would agree with me.

Miami,

Actually you are incorrect. It's not too much aircraft or they wouldn't be flying it. They have very strong load factors and if a 77W would have sufficed, that's what they would have sent. EK isn't sending the A380 just for the hell of it. They are in it to make money and can clearly fill the plane with enough passengers to do so.

There is room for 2-3 Middle East Airlines with VLA.

Miami,
Stop being such a Debbie downer. EK's 777 J hard product is sad compared to EY's and QR's 777 product. They put the A380 on DFW to stay competitive. You can choose to think otherwise.

EK is clearly feeling the heat from QR. Their DFW passenger loads in July were virtually tied. And you can't drive anywhere here in Dallas without seeing an EK A380 billboard - not to mention the front page section of The Dallas Morning News had a two page center section advertisement heralding the A380's onboard showers. It's gonna be fun to see how this all plays out but the ME3 don't give up easy so I suspect we'll see them dukeing it out for years to come here in DFW

Hopefully EY will send the 787-9 and QR the A350-900 to DFW. QR is behind both EK and EY on the J product. Their A350 product would put them back on top.

Their 787-9 has that new J too, but that's probably too small a plane for DFW.

great shot considering the pea soup conditions out there this morning.

Our EK rep mentioned to use a couple months ago their 380 would stay

in DFW all day today for press tours, etc, but we never heard another peep from him.

The departure shows 1240pm today and appears to be an on time departure.

At least our QF rep promised a tour for local travel agents in the new few week

Their 787-9 seats only 2 fewer people than their 77L. Needless to say the trips costs flying 787 vs 77L are   .

Folks seem to thing EY will throw in the towel on DFW

but the way these ME3 carriers are going after each other,

it wouldn't surprise me to see EY bring their 380 into DFW

within a year of startup.

DFW might wanna get busy on a 2nd 380 gate

They could add a 2nd 380 gate to the NW corner of the terminal.

They current gate is on the SW corner

18R.

The high-speed taxiways between 18L/36R and 18R/36L have been widened and reinforced to support the A380. While the A380 is already a very heavy airplane, the taxiways at DFW had to be of the strongest possible concrete available due to QF8 departing out with full fuel tanks to make the jump nonstop to SYD.

Quoting Sooner787 (Reply 31):

Come November, Etihad's performance in DFW will be a gamble. It's not a question of a market between DFW and Abu Dhabi, but instead of the three-way price war between EY, EK, and QR with connection flights into India.

It's going to be a juicy fight between the ME3 between an A380, 77W, and a 77L. EY is late to the party and has the most to lose, hence why their survival is speculated. I personally think that EY is headed for a financial bottomless pit in the next few years due to their rampant investments into failing airlines. Anybody who has ever studied the rapid collapse of Swissair can see the nearly identical strategy that Etihad is attempting to execute.

It has not been and will not be successful.

As far as I know, they have plans for 3 prepared. There's some speculation about BA upgrading DFW service to an A380 (likely when they get more in the fleet). The justification of it would be that DFW-LHR capacity is usually full. AA has 3-4 LHR daily flights and BA has one. It's a huge Oneworld route for EU connections and an A380 would fill up quickly in DFW without a doubt.

There is no problem filling up the aircraft IMO because there is a lot of traffic from SE Asia to Dallas. I think if ORD was A380 compatible then EK would have upgraded the flight to a A380.

That assumes premium demand was met by the 77L. The 77W and 77L differ in Y seat count, not F or J. You you're making an assumption that EK didn't need to expand for the premium cabin. Why do you believe there was no more growth in the premium cabin for EK possible and only in Y? For all you debates on the A380 being too much center on that fact.

I think we can conclude the reason the 77W wasn't sent is that cargo made more money than Y. So I wonder if EK will 'block out' quite a bit of Y to allow for cargo? There I am but speculating. But it is reasonable to assume that premium demand drove this up-gauge.

Quoting toxtethogrady (Reply 33):

IMHO overdue due to the premium demand.

Well for one, IAH did not have the gate space IIRC due to the LH timings.
I've read on some sites that they were trying to show up some of the other ME3s at DFW also.

Sorry if I missed this, but I assume that the QF A380 arrived into DFW just a day or two before the EK A380. Is QF the first A380 operator into DFW? IF so, I'm surprised EK didn't jump QF by a day or two so they could claim to be the first A380 operator into XXX airport - we know it wouldn't be the first time

EK is so aggressive with its A380 deployment that many people don't believe it will work. However that is all part of the EK master plan, they know how big a draw the aircraft itself is and they lean on it heavily (hence all the ad's in Dallas extolling the virtues of it).

Emirates create demand with their A380 and it has worked for them time and time again... It really is a lesson on how to use it successfully.

It is a difficult notion for some of our American cousins to appreciate, as they have been raised with the mantra frequency of service is the main driver of a successful airline, which works very well...for America.

Emirates is different and, as you point out, their methodology works remarkably well...for them.

Truly a great day for DFW. When I first joined Anet, DFW was struggling to just to maintain international destinations. In the early 2000's after 9/11, this airport lost Sabena (which was a great way to go DFW-MAA via Brussels), then Air France. BA was the usual 772, and LH would alternate 343 in summer and 333 in winter. AA wasn't going anywhere but the usual European capitals like FRA, LHR, and CDG, to name a few.

Now, look at DFW. Two 380's, ME3 fighting hard for business, QF with its beautiful planes, service and the longest nonstop flight in the world. My only gripe is that AA got HKG instead of CX, lol.

Congrats to DFW!

Looks like Friday's (10/3) QFA7 diverted back to SYD.

https://flightaware.com/live/flight/QFA7/history/20141003/0310Z/YSSY/KDFW

Their website shows a new departure time of Saturday 10/4, and the original QFA7 for 10/4 also operating.

Normal flight lands at 1345 CT, the delayed flight from Friday arrives an hour later. Both will miss Emirates, as UAE222 departs about 1300.

Quoting Longhornmaniac (Reply 51):
I've heard that BA will send the 380 to DFW next year, pulling it off of LAX. Time will tell.

Not a chance. The LAX-LHR mission defines what the whale was built for. Reduced 3 daily flights to 2. BA is sending the A380 to SFO next spring as well.

I seriously need to go on this flight! Perhaps MIA-DFW-DXB!
