Just a curious question.
Is MIA much of an O/D market or more of a connecting point for other markets such as caribbean and/or Latin America?
Being from South Florida, I just don't see the citizens of Miami as travelers to domestic destinations. Walking around the airport it just seemed teeming with holiday makers going on cruises and caribbean vacations.

Over half the traffic at MIA is local, so, yeah, it's a pretty big O&D market.

Per AA published hub profile using 2009 numbers, 41% of AA enplaments @ MIA were local. So 59% connecting flow on AA.
As I recall AA's domestic O&D share is closer to 60%, so it means the international services more reliant on connections.
The AA profile also says MIA represented 7% of system O&D itineraries with median stage length of 1097 miles. 21.0% of enplanements for AA at MIA were using premium tickets.

The usage of Ft.Lauderdale as an alternative airport of Miami is a clear sign about the sizeable O&D market, in terms of the coverage to the rest of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Or you could have thought about this for one more minute and realize that, outside, say, NYC and LAX, MIA is a huge O&D market for Latam and Europe (and a few others).

How much of that O&D traffic is for cruise ships, or what would MIA's O&D stats be without the cruise traffic? How much of that tourist $$ is actually spent in MIA, other than getting to/fr the cruise terminal? MCO has to suck up tons more tourist $$ than MIA.

Domestic, absolutely. International? No way. I don't know how much is cruise ships, but Europeans and South Americans aren't big on the whole cruise ship thing. It's very much an American/British thing to cruise.

Well destinations such as New York, DC, Boston LA and Chicago have large O/D markets. Look closer especially on the New York and LA flights. But Miami does have a very strong international O/D presence as well. Also don't forget FLL is the same air market which has even more O/D traffic.

FLL is the bigger domestic airport. MIA is bigger in the west coast long haul markets, MIA to LAX is bigger then FLL to LAX.

Origin and Destination. So passengers who come into or leave MIA not for or from connecting flights.

Apparently about 10% is cruise traffic related. So in my view the situation is: MIA would still be a major airport without the cruise ship traffic.
