SQ 77W Landing Incident MUC November 2011

Fri Oct 03, 2014 2:10 am

A current thread on a KLM 744 that came to a stop at AMS with its nose gear in the grass reminds of the landing incident at MUC on November 3, 2011 where an SQ 77W arriving from MAN (operates MAN-MUC-SIN) swerved off the runway to the left and then back across the runway to the right and came to a stop in the grass completely off the runway. The runway was bare and dry.

Has there ever been a report indicating the cause? I've never seen anything and don't know where to find German accident/incident reports. I assume there must have been some kind of investigation into that incident which caused major delays at MUC that day with one of the two runways closed for several hours.

I was on a KLM 737-800 that day AMS-MUC due to arrive around 1700, a few hours after the SQ landing, and the airport was still operating with only one runway. After holding for about 45 minutes waiting for a landing slot my KL flight diverted to Nuremberg for fuel and finally arrived MUC about 3 hours late, shortly after the 2nd runway had reopened.

The SQ landing was caught on video by spotters

There's a link to a better video in this item showing the actual landing and rollout:

Thanks for sharing those pics. I had forgotten about that incident...

Just the images above, showing the tyre marks, tell a scary story...

Nonetheless, congrats to the pilot for parking it almost perfectly parallel to the runway - in the grass

It had something do with a Avro RJ taking off and crossing the localiser antennae. There is a BFU report out there, but I can't remember if it's completed.
Me: (Lining up on final) I shall now select an aiming point. || Instructor: Well, I hope it's the runway...
