Cubana Il96M Delivery/San Antonio De Los Banos

Fri Oct 03, 2014 7:55 am

Hey guys,

Anyone knows when Cubana de Aviacion will receive their new Il96M?

What about that Cuban-Russian project to open a regional huib for travelers in Cuba at San Antonio de los Banos Air base?

It's a good question. I checked RU-net sources. And didn't find any information.
I am wondering how they are going to manufacture -M version for Cubana?
It's almost 10 meters longer. And it's supposed to have PW engines and Collins avionics.

A beautiful plane. And being longer, it looks like IL-86: http://youtu.be/omc3vET-z50

Anyway. Though the difference between PS-90AN (16,000) and PW2337 (17,030) appear to be not that much, IL-96M was re-designed considering PW engines.
Maybe this is the cause of delay? Sanctions.

BTW. I didn't hear anything of this hub project at San Antonio de los Banos. Would drop a good link, please?
I am on EK 231/232. The rest is just jet lag.

It's the IL-96-400 that CU was acquiring and not the IL-96M. The IL-96-400 uses 100% Russian made engines unlike the IL-96M which comes with PW. Due to the United States embargo against Cuba they cannot purchase a US made engine or any engine with American parts.

Aha. I am sorry. I didn't follow the developments (though I love Havana!)
And I am an absolute fan of -300 model.

So we are talking about PS-90A1 with 17,400 thrust.
Still can't find any info in Russian regarding delivery delay.
Is there a delay?

I think these airframes will never be delivered, they are the ex-Polet IL96-400T that were returned to VASO for pax. conversion, and then they would be delivered to Cubana.

They have been in VASO since June 2013, but there has been no single update about their status since then. The 4th airframe of the 400 series is being converted to the 400-VPU version for the presidential flight squadron, I think that will be the only 400 we will ever see flying in pax. configuration.

I can't find confirmation that -400 version has EASA certification.
It might be related to this issue.
Trying to find something on RU-net. No result as of yet.

The construction of the new airport outside Havana in a former military base was announced more than a year ago during the visit of Medvedev to Cuba, together with the possible creation of a Cuban-Russian airlines. See a link below

Being unfamiliar with HAV or Havana in general, what is the purpose of building this new hub at the San Antonio de los Banos Air Base versus expanding/building up HAV?

I was also perplexed.
Three runways to have is a good thing.
However, Jose Marti is a great airport. And it has lots of land to expand in virtually every direction.
So far I see no viability as a such.

@peteinmiami
Thanks for reminding me of ruaviation.com source.
I found a fantastic stuff there about SSJ-100/95.
I gave the link in the respective thread.
