Swiss Intends To Come Back To Pakistan

Fri Oct 03, 2014 8:00 am

Surprised to hear this but nevertheless its good for Pakistan. Swissair/SWISS has been flying to Karachi on and off for over 30 years, Lufthansa too.

No specifics mentioned on routes airports or frequency.

Please feel free to share if you have any info. Recently I also read somewhere that local authorities finally understood why hardly any foreign airlines fly to Pakistan. CAA is now working on making their charges more competitive in an attempt lure them back. This could have worked much better before the siege we saw at Karachi this summer.

For us Pakistani's,the main airline choices we have with decent frequency:

Emirates/Etihad/Qatar to Middle East and Europe/US
Turkish - Europe

Thai - SEA, FE, Australia
Srilankan - SEA FE

Personally my two favorites SQ and CX were the last carriers to stop flying

Would LX return nonstop to KHI? If so, they would have to layover in Pakistan, or send two crews, one for the outbound and another for the inbound. A/c would have to be specially configured to include a crew rest area if LX doesn't have them already.
Another option would be to operate via a Gulf city-perhaps DXB or AUH?

Hi DG,

I don't think any foreign airline has a layover for their crew in Pak. When Swiss last flew to Karachi it was via DXB.

For example CX did HKG BKK KHI. new crew was taken on at BKK for BKK KHI BKK

Quoting directorguy (Reply 1):

This poses another problem. When you have ME3 offering 1 stops connections between Africa, Europe and North America, a 2-stop will seem extremely uncompetitive.

The biggest deterrent is the issue of safety at airports. I've just heard that there was another firing at an aircraft at PEW. With incidents like these, they will just find it easier to codeshare and retain presence in Pakistan.

It is quite sad to see Pakistan have no other options to EU/NA other than ME3, PK and TK.

The only airline with a serious chance from the "West" (TK does not count here) that can make KHI work is BA due to the large O&D demand between KHI and LHR.

Airlines such as LX/LH/KL/AF can only have a glimmer of hope if they operate to LHE or ISB as the bulk of the EU/North America traffic from PAK hails from these 2 cities. Hence why you see PIA only operate from LHE and ISB into mainland Europe now rather than KHI as the demand from the latter is not that great plus it is quite pointless competing against multiple daily EK/QR/EY).

If, and I see a big IF SWISS restarts ops to Pakistan, I really wonder where they would get the hardware from as the longhaul fleet is utilized to the max already. There is no back-up plane or a lot of room in the schedules to free up any 330 or 340 with current network. For the WTT SWISS is already reducing the 340 to CAI to 320's for that sake.

Also, the competition with EK will be tough, as EK does already a double daily ZRH-DXB with 380 & 77W.

To be honest I don't see this one happening anytime soon.

their DXB flight is currently linked with MCT where LH is also flying to (via AUH). maybe de-link it and send the aircraft ZRH-DXB-KHI vv. with 5th freedom rights instead.
MCT bound passengers fly with LH and KHI with LX and revenue stays within the LH Group.

Hell will freeze over before Swiss returns to PAK.

Just the usual ramblings from "high ranking" diplomats.

Thats an exaggeration its not impossible, Swiss served KHI right upto winter 2004 and were not threatened in anyway,, infact two years ago Austrian too were planning on flying there, only a US carrier would be unthinkable flying to Pakistan., though cargo ones keep popping in off and on, Klaitta, Southern, UPS, Tradewinds, World airways.

BTW Cargolux have returned to KHI.

I can only recall Swissair serving KHI, not LX.

I note the Wikipedia article shows many LX destinations as "cancelled" which LX has never served.

Swiss International served ZRH-DXB-KHI route from 2002 to 2004 with A332 and then A340, their first ever A340 flight was inaugurated on this route which was a pleasent surprise.
