FlyDubai To Bratislava, Sofia And Prague

Fri Oct 03, 2014 1:08 pm

According to local newspaper, FlyDubai will start twice weekly flights between BTS and DXB. Fights will start on December 6, 2014 and will be operational for the Winter season only (for the time being).

Flights will be operated on Tuesdays and Saturdays (presumably departures from BTS).

Other flights:

To SOF, flights will start on December 14, 2014 and will operate on Wednesdays and Sundays.

No information about Prague's flights.

FlyDubai continues on its expansion to CEE markets. Depending on attractive pricing this may be an interesting route. Quite a few Slovaks frequently travel to Dubai, though it would be nice to know exact statistics on passenger numbers.

Why PRG? EK already flies daily with a 77W

Interesting question.

Maybe testing the market for more 'price cautious' customers? Return ticket to BTS (I presume PRG is in a simillar range) starts at EUR 480, business class at EUR 1,300.

Hopefully it does not mean that EK will reduce frequency or completely stop flying to PRG.

Wow. Bratislava. Has anyone saw that coming? The interesting thing about BTS is that it can work as well as a "Vienna low-cost" airport; so Emirates gets EK at VIE and FZ at "VIE East".

There are many FlyDubai routes where EK also operates. FlyDubai usually complements EK in cities with high O&D from DXB. Yet you never know... Kiev and Baku saw EK and now are only serviced by FlyDubai.

I have a sad feeling this will be the case with PRG soon.. PRG is not known for high yields and is a small market.

Baku was served by EK in the 1990s, FZ came about just a few years ago, yes Kiev got both.

I don't think that's the case at all. EK and FZ serve several markets very well and without any problems. Places like DAC/CMB/KHI/BOM/DEL/COK/TRV/HYD/AMD and all of GCC.

On another note, flydubai is just expanding at breakneck speed this year. They've launched/announced: -

1. Prague
2. Bratislava
3. Sofia
4. Entebbe
5. Bujumbura
6. Kigali
7. Dar Es Salaam
8. Kilimanjaro
9. Zanzibar
10. Aden
11. Delhi
12. Kochi
13. Trivandrum
14. Almaty
15. Shymkent
16. Kandahar
17. Sarajevo
18. Zagreb
19. Mumbai
20. Moscow Vnukovo
21. Tehran
22. Mashad
23. Hofuf

That is by far the BIGGEST expansion I've ever seen! Kudos to flydubai for making it work!

it still amazes me how much legs the 738 has! those flights are 5+ hrs and the config is 12/162 so quite dense.

the only logical destinations in the Eastern Mediterranean/Balkan missing are in my opinion:
BUD, SOF (both served by Wizzair from DWC though...)
ESB, AYT (SAW is big, but those are also interesting markets)
ATH, LCA (double-dipping with EK...) and SKG maybe

Probably room for another frequency, but not another 77W... Just a guess.

First, happy 2 years on a.net. It was discussed a while back due to limits at VIE. However, it was discussed for EK. If it works out, it is an excellent station for FZ. Anyone know the bilateral limit? (7X/week or more?).

What was their aircraft expansion?

Per Wikipedia, they only have 40 airframes! How many have business class? IMHO, EK must upgrade to all 'lie flat' business class and FZ will be the lower cost product with 'old school' business class.

And they have 100 MAX on order that will have another half hour+ of range...

And FlyDubai makes a profit. Only 6% margin, but it is positive...

To anyone: Is there a link of unutilized Dubai bilaterals? I'm curious where they are allowed to keep expanding.

Definitely SKG would be interesting. It is probably too of a small market for EK, but I can see FZ.

Regarding Turkey, FlyNas flies to Antakya and Adana from JED and RUH. I wonder whether it has to with tourism, VFR or both. Antakya is interestingly really close to the Syrian border. Maybe they could combine some of those Turkish destinations with Ercan.

I am really surprised to see that apparently there are no Ankara-Dubai regular flight, whether it is FZ, EK or TK.

I think Bratislava is a very smart move. The airport has only a few airlines flying there and flydubai will become the fastest and shortest connection for 660.000 people living in the Bratislava urban area. I am sure they are also paying next to nothing to use the airport.

As already mentioned, this could be the lowcost alternative for Vienna and for all those who do not want to pay the legacy airline fare and who do not mind the drive to BTS.

I guess they are after Smartwings´s market share in addition to rounding up the EK presence at the lower yields level.

The only question is - how far can FZ go? If they can reach Prague and Moscow, then could they do secondary Italian markets like BLQ and NAP? Perhaps the Baltics - RIX, TLL, VNO? Obviously they still have a few more Balkan nations to add service to, as well as secondary markets like CLJ, HER, IAS, SKG, etc. Perhaps they could reach secondary Polish markets like KRK as well?
Flying in the middle seat of coach is much better than not flying at all!

I remember that until recently they were reluctant to launch Zagreb flights because it would exceed crew hours. Since they have announced Zagreb (among other routes) it seems that they have also adjusted their business model.

Makes me wonder whether they will eventually start code shares with EK.

PRG is not that bad a location to grab some of the East and Southeast German market.
Since EK (and FZ for that matter) won´t get additional traffic rights to Germany (in particular Berlin) I could see them trying to get more passengers through the backdoor ...

As a regular ESB-IST-DXB flyer, I can tell you that ESB-DXB is a huge market compared to all these small Balkan/East Europe airports. As Turkey's construction companies are mostly based in Ankara, ESB-DXB route is a medium/high yield business driven traffic. Moreover there is a reasonable ESB-Australia/NZ market as well which for now goes through Qatar Airways as QR is the only party with permits to fly to East, between Doha and ESB (this is because of special relationship between Turkish and Qatar Governments).

Of course EK is willing to fly to ESB, ADB and AYT but TK is lobbying among DHMI (State Airports Administration) to avoid such permits. UAE government even offered in the past to lift visa sanctions to Turkish Citizens in exchange for unlimited flight rights between UAE and Turkey which Turkey refused. Actually Turkey does not care about visa restrictions of UAE and see it as UAE's own problem.

I wish at least Anadolujet and FZ are both allowed on ESB-DXB route. We also discuss this on Turkish Aviation Forum time to time and lets see what time will bring us.
The future is in the skies.

Emirates or Ethihad or at least FlyDubai will be flying soon, hopefully, to not only Ankara but few other Turkish Airports.

If I am not mistaken, EK are starting BUD on 27 October.

EK111 08:20 DXB 11:35 BUD A332 J/Y
EK112 15:05 BUD 23:30 DXB A332 J/Y

So it looks as if Wizzair will have some competition on their Budapest services. Will FZ make it a three horse race?

Its well served from Europe, high time Turkey started drawing tourists etc there from other parts of the world, someone from the east has to fly there to end the ridiculous back track, like QR are offering a second option to Thai in Yangon to travellers from west.
