RJ Clips DL Regional Jet At JFK

Sun Oct 05, 2014 11:58 pm

I'm working right now at JFK and saw the RJ A330 clip a DL regional jet on Taxiway November in front of Terminal One. Does anyone have any additional information?

The RJ-330 looks pretty close to the center line.
I am assuming DL's RJ had not pulled all the way forward to the stops at a gate when the 330 clipped it or were they both still taxiing.

Just a question- it seems like we are seeing more and more of these types of incursions in recent years, starting with the AF A380/ DL CRJ incident, one involving a DL 767, the US 757/KL 737 one, a few more that I can't think of off the top of my head, and now this one. Are they just being reported more often or is there something wrong with ground operations at airports?

Airports are getting crowded. And T2 and T1 at JFK are too busy in the evening and too close to each other. The RJ parking area has a lot of airplanes in a small space, and the bigger aircraft moving around T1 cannot see them all.

JFK is busy. And DL has a crapload of RJs in a tiny spot against the busiest section of taxiway at the airport. Not a good recipe.

Sounds suspiciously like the a380 incident...

Either that or widebodies go out of their way to hit delta RJs at JFK

This incident happened on taxiway "N" which is not part of the Terminal 1 ramp area, nor was this incident anywhere near terminal 2. Royal Jordanian does not even operate out of Terminal 1. This incident happened on the active taxiway. Congestion had nothing to do with it.

How hard would it have been to type out Royal Jordanian? Love the ambiguity of RJ clips DL regional Jet...

Royal Jordanian A330 (err A342) clips the wing of Delta Connection Regional Jet actually makes more sense. Sorry... it has always bothered me the use of two letter airline codes on this and other forums...

Was that same area where Air France A380 struck CRJ at JFK last year?

Social media my friend. 10 years ago you would hardly hear of any minor ground incursions unless it was at your local airport and made the newspaper the next morning. Nowadays people grab their cellphones to take pictures and post the incursions on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. The major news organizations monitor social media and any incursion, mo matter how minor, will case an explosion of "breaking news" at CNN, MSNBC, FOX, etc.

Exactly.

An extended example of that is incidents like the NW Airlink ARJ that crashed into a jetbridge in MEM, the NW DC9/A319 incident in MSP, the NW A320/NW 757 incident in LGA all which barely were heard about in that day in age without camera phones and social media.

Not to mention NW 85 that was being discussed on another thread that got virtually no media attention in that incident.

Now events are much more widely publicized and pictures more available.

Oh, Dailymail:

What became of the A342? Was it able to depart back home as scheduled? Anyone with actual knowledge of how this incident came to be?

So, what exactly happened? Did a wing hit a tail? I know that an a340 wing will clear the top of any crj body. Also, what carrier for the DL RJ? If it happened on November, then was it a typical JFK cluster corner problem? How does AE not get clipped at JFK? Was it an inside job to write off a plane vs just retiring one? Where are the conspiracy theorists today? I tell you what, we can go 100+ threads on a missing 777, but only 20 responses on another DL RJ getting hit at JFK. I am kind of disappointed in this lack of doom and gloom and chicken little the end of the world.

Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing! It's a bonus if you can fly the plane again!!

Will be interesting to see if RJ repair this frame, remove the winglet or just ferry and park it. They have very little time left before retirement now.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who thought this was regional jet (RJ) vs. Regional jet...

At least the insurance residual value is low.

Seriously, what do 4 engine aircraft have against DL regional jets?

Wouldn't it be odd if Royal Jordanian had RJ's?

You'd have RJ's RJs.

The other funny headline was DAL (Delta Airlines) pulling out of DAL (Dallas/Love Field).

While I'm at it, I bet the MEL (minimum equipment list) is popular in MEL.

OK. I admit it. I'm bored.
A good landing is one you can walk away from. A great landing is if the aircraft can be flown again.

Not to belabor the point, but at first I thought you meant they're sending a crew in to work on the Delta Connection regional jet; I would think somebody already at JFK would be able to do that...  silly

Accuracy is doubtful w/DailyMail, but article is quoting a very low 159 on board the RJ A340, 62.5% LF. Is this just a function of the tensions in the region?
