Qantas To Unveil Retro Livery On Boeing 737

Wed Oct 08, 2014 7:18 am

Hi A.netters

It's finally going to materialise with QF confirming their 75th B738 to be delivered in November will be sporting a 1970's retro color scheme  http://i59.tinypic.com/f43fig.jpg

Qantas will paint its newest Boeing 737 jet in a unique 'retro' livery to mark the 70th anniversary of the airline's iconic flying kangaroo logo.
That jet will also be the 75th Boeing 737-800 to join the Qantas fleet when it wings its way from Seattle to Australia in mid-November.
“Our kangaroo logo represents our proud history, inextricably linked with the development of commercial aviation in Australia" says Olivia Wirth, Qantas Group Executive for Brand, Marketing and Corporate Affairs.
"It has also become a symbol of ‘home’ to Australians travelling both here and abroad," Wirth said.

The V-Jet scheme looks hot! What livery is Travolta's 707 currently sporting? I heard it recently got painted into something special (PAN AM?) but I'm not sure how long that is for or what the plan was...

How about each side of the bird painted in a different livery, as per the two above

Why is there that ghastly ochre/brown colour on the first image when that was never a livery, as it was always a darker colour (the red seen in the 744 image below?)

I doubt they are going to do more than the one but on the slim chance they go for a series, a 717 in classic T jet livery is a must.

The first Qantas B747 scheme and the last B707 scheme most definitely had an 'ochre' cheat line, not red!

John Travolta's B707 had the Pan Am scheme applied for external shots used in the TV series 'Pan Am'. It has been back in the QF livery for a while now.

But, please, as I mentioned in another thread, please keep that livery away from the A380. I don't want to

That looks fantastic!!

Some of us even remember flying in QF 707's and 747's in the 70's and 80's with this colour scheme.

It would like nice on an A330

On a related note...

Was very sad to walk past VH-VXB today, and notice it is back to the normal colour scheme. When did this happen? I will miss the old 'vomit comet'.

Absolutely stoked that QF will be launching a retro scheme. Best QF news in ages! Let's hope it is not as disappointing as the most recent VH-IXJ colour scheme.

Um sorry, but the 75th Qantas 737 is JetConnect's ZK-ZQA. It even has a sticker to prove it.

As he said, it's going to be the 75th B738, aka 737-800.

For my part I wish QF would paint an A380 in Nalanji Dreaming livery and an A330 in Australian Airlines (the original one) final livery.

Approximately 2 weeks ago VH-VXB returned from SIN sporting the revised QF scheme. The aircraft operated SIN-DRW as QF6014 & then operated her first revenue flight as QF0829 the 24/09.

What's the point of the airline making such a distinction? Why not call XZP the 85th or 90th 737 (or whatever number 737 it is)? Sounds more impressive and would be more logical.

It could be done at least one of three ways.

1) stripped and repainted with normal paint. This is the long term solution

2) paint over the Qantas paint scheme with temporary paint. This paint is made to be applied over normally painted aircraft for movie shoots or special events. This paint can easily be removed with a solution but can also last for years.

3) decals/stickers

What was probably done was number two.

OMG I am thrilled Qantas are applying this particular livery! Nothing says 'The flying Kangaroo' better than this livery. Is this a permanent livery or temporary?

Perhaps for their 80th celebration a TAA 717 and a TN (original Australian Airlines for the non-Aussies)? I loved the blue green and gold...

Mate,
A very good point! Good catch....
Hmmmm... I would prefer this livery, and I reckon it was the first to feature the flying kangaroo prominently.
A retro QF livery already exists on the Travolta 707 and another on the Longreach 707.
Therefore, I believe that the ochre stripe winged kangaroo will get the nod as the new retro...
Heres hoping...

When I first saw this I wouldn't say that I was overly excited, but this colourscheme has grown on me very quickly. I definitely look forward to seeing the final product, and I would expect that the orange ("ochre") will be much less "in your face" on the finished product.

Quoting ZKOJQ (Reply 23):
What's the point of the airline making such a distinction?

It hasn't really got anything to do with being the "75th 737-800", but rather 70 years of the Flying Roo livery. I guess they think #75 sounded at least vaguely like a milestone, which is why they opted for that rather than the 74th or 117th 737 or whatever it is, but that was pretty much just an afterthought to make the aircraft sound slightly more important than it is.

Quoting ZKOJQ (Reply 23):

They're well over 100 by now, as this video shows: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsDrhBsJy40

I have no idea what the current figure is, but I would guess that it is around 110?

On a personal level, I was so happy to see #100 was named Bungendore! Unfortunately I still haven't had the opportunity to fly on her.

I just don't get it, an airline with lots of major problems to sort out, some of which have a great bearing on its future expends time and money painting a new plane in an ancient livery.

I think I know what Michael O'Leary of Ryanair's viewpoint would be on the matter

Whats it add to the profit line ? nothing, it just makes a few ancient anoraks spill their coffee from their thermos as they gaze lovingly over the airport fence.

From what I understand its a new build being painted by Boeing, so cost wise for QF will/ should be "0". As a PR thing for those of us down under who remember the livery its a welcome site. Incidentally it was the scheme on my first QF flight 40 years ago , so I cant wait to see it

I just don't get it, an airline with lots of major problems to sort out, some of which have a great bearing on its future expends time and money painting a new plane in an ancient livery.

The aircraft will have to be painted anyway so no big deal. Also, it's a PR stunt, which by the way, i find much better than all the c..p delivered by O'Leary on a regular basis. In addition to that, it's a very simple way to recollect the company's long history.

Quoting Bongodog1964 (Reply 33):
it just makes a few ancient anoraks spill their coffee from their thermos as they gaze lovingly over the airport fence.

Just for that we'll need more than one tomato to throw at you. I was still quite young when they introduced the red an white livery thirty years ago, but i still prefer to look at a classic livery than one of the cheap and flashy ones we see lately.

It's a PR thing for those of us down under who remember the livery its a welcome site. Incidentally it was the scheme on my first QF flight 40 years ago , so I cant wait to see it

I'm not sure if you know something I don't know; but, according to the Australian Business Traveller article; '...Qantas has not revealed exactly what form the Boeing 737's unique retro livery will take or which version of the flying kangaroo will sit proudly on its tail.'

...so it might not be the scheme of your first QF flight at all.

I heard a bizarre rumor that the two sides of the 737 will have different liveries...
To be honest, I would discredit this rumor, but I thought I'd put it out there anyway...

My thoughts?
There are already retro schemes out there on two different 707s: John Travolta's 707 and the Longreach 707. The orange stripe scheme has not been 'used' and thus would be perfect. It features arguably the strongest use of the winged kangaroo of all the colourschemes and thus is doubly appropriate.
I kind of wish however, that it was on an A330, but seeing as this scheme was largely on Boeing jets, plus a couple of BAe 125s and DC-6s for Norfolk Island, it's appropriate to be applied to the only new build Boeings entering the fleet.
Maybe one of the A330-300s about to be repainted will get a special scheme...

What ever version they paint it, I bet it won't have a bare metal underside and as we all know the old international QANTAS never had 737s. Come on Qantas do a 747 with the orange stripe while you still have some left and a 717 in a TAA "T-jet" scheme.

For my part I wish QF would paint an A380 in Nalanji Dreaming livery and an A330 in Australian Airlines (the original one) final livery

That would be a dream, but I wonder if the weight of paint involved might undermine its range or payload? I would love to see it happen!

I am glad they are doing this; every airline should celebrate its history and Qantas has as proud a history as any other in the industry. I would hope that for their 100th anniversary in 2020, they would have a range of liveries from their past. I didnt particularly like their 1970s livery, but a retro livery is a retro livery and I'm looking forward to this one. I would have a preferred the 1960s V-jet livery, but hopefully they will do that on a 737 for the big century ...

Would it really add that much more weight compared to one painted in regular livery? It's still a lot white.

I would expect that the orange ("ochre") will be much less "in your face" on the finished product.

I hope, and think, that you would be correct and that would be the case. Some things look much better in real life than they do on paper, but then again, some don't... I'm sure this will look better on the finished product

Sorry, I was thinking about the A380 there; it don't think it would make a massive difference to a 330.
