South Florida Aviation Thread

Wed Oct 08, 2014 11:23 pm

I might as well jump on the bus.

This thread is dedicated you everything that is happening in the South Florida Aviation. For example; stuff that's going on in MIA, FLL, and PBL.

What we know so far:

MIA:
American Airlines is launching new services to AUS, SAT, SLC and MCI.

Qatar Airways is adding another flight (on Mondays), making it 5x weekly. Starting November 17.

Frontier has announced services from MIA to LGA, ORD, DEN, and PHL.

Air France is launching A380 service on December 1st.

FLL:

TAME is starting service from UIO on October 17.

Azul is starting service on December 1st.

Virgin America adds FLL-JFK on December 18. (Winter seasonal)

I hope you enjoy this thread.

My prediction for South Flordia:

EK to announce MIA before the next US summer.

What I would like to see:

Greater ties between MIA and Asia.

*Daniel Bryan chant* Yes! Yes! Yes!

I do sure hope so. It appears (so far) that Qatar is doing well at MIA. Qatar's performance may affect EK decision on MIA.

Yes, me too. Though, most flights are really long. But actually, some are sorter than DXB! For example, NRT, PEK, and ICN.

NRT - MIA appears to be about 60 miles shorter that SYD - LAX.

NRT / ICN are used as stops for some Asian carriers on their way to the US so why not MIA from an Asian destination if it is within range??? Could be a 787 route???

LAN Airlines became the first carrier to launch Boeing 787 Dream)liner service to MIA exactly two months ago on the SCL-MIA, SCL-CUN-MIA and SCL-PUJ-MIA routes! It really is a pleasure to finally have 787 flights to SCL from MIA!

Next year LATAM will further increase frequencies on the SCL-MIA, GRU-MIA and BSB-MIA routes. The SCL-MIA route will go double daily year-round utilizing the 787-8. TAM will increase frequency on the GRU-MIA route to 3x daily (B77W, B763), as well as increasing frequency on the BSB-MIA route to a daily service (B763).

Last month LATAM announced the new frequencies to MIA for 2015. There will be a slight increase in capacity on the routes between SCL and MIA operated with the new 787-8s. It should be noted that TAM will only deploy the A332s on certain flights into MIA on a temporary basis as they are being replaced with B-767-316ERs; which are more efficient a/c for TAM to operate compared to the A332s that are being phased out.

The 787 is IMHO the plane that could make routes from places like Asia to MIA possible, well, more possible than previously thought as it has the range but is not too big capacity wise...

PBI....
1) Waiting to see if PeopleExpress will restart operations after shutting down until at least Oct. 16.

2) Expecting Spirit and Air Canada back for the season some time in Nov.

3) AA is expected to move flights from the C concourse to the B concourse with USAirways in early November.

4) Frontier is due to start up Trenton, Denver and DCA flights. Denver starts 10/26 and departs Tues/Thurs/Sat/Sun. Trenton starts 11/21 and departs Tues/Fri/Sun. DCA starts 11/21 and departs Mon/Wed/Fri/Sat. Frontier did attempt a Denver only daily a few years back from PBI and quickly ceased service.

5) JetBlue will add a DCA daily starting Dec. 18, providing competition to US/AA and Frontier on that route.

6) The airport is rumored to be adding a liquor store on level one near the JetBlue baggage office.

Cheers

South Florida is used for MIA-FLL-PBI and sometimes is extended to the Keys, Naples / Ft Myers /Sarasota are usually named around here as
Florida West Coast or Southwest Florida. This is the common way people living in "South Florida" use these terms. Hope this clarifies it for you

Will US/AA be taking back B7, and will Frontier be using the for JetBlue gates of B10-B12 or will they be over in C?

Also, I've heard a couple of rumors from agents at MIA that there's a chance KLM might come back before April. Not entirely sure about their credibility but just putting it out here lol

I'm very happy to see more Latin American airlines flying into FLL. Since I live the same distance from MIA and FLL, it's nice to see more options at FLL.

I believe (or rather, hope) that we will see MIA-NRT soon. Doesn't JAL already serve Tampa? MIA would just be a little further for the 787. Since JAL is part of One World, MIA-NRT makes way too much sense.

It will be also nice to have another A380 operator here with AF. Very cool indeed.

Thanks for the thread, Miami. Things are hopping in SoFla!

I live in South Florida and would love to see PBI built up more. Years ago when Skybus was flying from Columbus to Fort Lauderdale, there was a rumor that Skybus looked at moving their operation to Boca Raton (BCT), if this is accurate, I am not sure as BCT does not have any facilities for airline operations.

I would love to see PBI open up more midwestern and west coast operations but I know there is probably little demand due to location.

Any thoughts?

British Airways going 17x weekly to MIA until May.

Qatar is seeing good numbers in MIA. 93% of the seats were occupied during the month of August. From DOH to MIA, 95% of seats were full, while on the return from Miami 91% of seats were full.

Thomas Cook is starting flights to MIA from MAN starting on May 3rd. 2x weekly.

Aeroflot is going 4x weekly for the winter months to MIA from SVO.

Lets talk EYW (that's south florida....):

It has decent service, but it seems apparent that its mainly tourist, not VFR, because with a population of 25,000, its just not enough to validity that much service. It does well with what it has right now, but Southwest showed that there was a gap, and that more service was possible (not quite as much as they had hoped), but sustainable service may be within reach. I can't see EYW not being linked to NYC for that much longer. Jetblu needs to come down to Key West.

How does the MIA-EYW service do? Is it mostly business because the drive isn't that bad for there to be the necessity for this link without connections.

How does the MIA-EYW service do?

Service is really good. When I decide to visit The Keys, I go with American Eagle.. Not time for me to drive!

Every time I fly to EYW. The flight is packed. Though, the ride to EYW is quite cramped.

I remember having read somewhere that pax traffic between NCE and MIA is soaring. Would a direct route be profitable? We have direct to North America to JFK (DL) as well as AC and TS, more or less seasonal. Today's options to MIA are usually via MAD, FRA, ZRH, CDG or LHR. NCE serves the whole Riviera including Monaco and Cannes as well as parts of northern Italy. Your thoughts?

Probably, but not for a daily flight. Though, I think NCE is one of the biggest markets that is not served to/from MIA. Not completely sure.

How does the MIA-EYW service do? Is it mostly business because the drive isn't that bad for there to be the necessity for this link without connections.

I would imagine that it's mostly tourism traffic connecting through MIA. I work as a ticket agent and I can't remember the last time I checked in a locally originating EYW-bound passenger.

Jetairfly has been seeing some really great load factors in MIA since it's launch.

American to increase Miami-Caracas/Maracaibo frequency in Nov-2014 and again in Dec-2014
