Kansas City Royals Alcs UA Charter

Sun Oct 12, 2014 4:21 am

The other day, one of the Royals players tweeted a photo of them about to board at MCI before heading off to BWI for the ALCS, and the a/c reg was visible: N75858 (B753). Flightaware translated that to UA 1805, which also had a flight history that correlated rather well to the Royals' regular season road schedule. Looks like that for the most part, they keep the same flight number. After dropping off the Royals in Baltimore, that a/c headed off to EWR as UA1849 and rejoined the regular UA schedule.

Tonight's return flight to KC is still UA 1805 (and when you rent the whole plane, they're nice enough to hang around and wait for you when you're delayed getting out of the ballpark because you're playing extra innings, or signing stuff). Tonight's a/c is N57852, which is scheduled to fly BOS-SFO-IAD in the morning. Crew has a long and boring ferry flight ahead of them as UA1859, arriving at 0441.

UA's blue and gold livery works well for the Royals, too!

Orioles are about 20 minutes behind them on DL 8884, a B763, N1402A.

United has been flying the Royals all season long. UA does the season long charters for about 10 MLB teams in fact. Most of the time, they use some 737 variant, getting an upgraded aircraft for the playoffs. However, the LA Dodgers choose to use a 752/753 all season long (LA ego I guess)....

UA is also doing the SF Giants' charter flight, their number is UAL 1806, and they took a 764 to STL to play the Cardinals in the NLCS:

I wonder why the Royals flew into MCI instead of MKC like they do all year long? I know ATA used to fly the 753 in/out of MDW (which has a shorter runway) does UA's 753 not have the same capabilities? If I was a player who has been playing a lot of extra innings I would prefer the airport closest to home and less of a hassle.

Any thoughts?

It is open 24/7. I see aircraft fly by my condo that overlooks the airport at all hours of the night.

I saw DAL8882 departing with the Angels from MKC to MDW on a 757 June 29th this year so it's not an issue that MKC can't handle the plane. Either United isn't comfortable operating the 757 from MKC or the Royals prefer using MCI for the playoffs for security reasons, or both. I drove by MKC before the Angels arrived and the plane was parked near the old TWA HQ building, now Signature FBO. The plane was very close to the fence (and the movie Memphis Belle plane on tour there that weekend). The Royals departed about 15 minutes earlier on a United 737 from MKC to MSP that day. I was at an event at Kaw Point on the Kansas side when they both left. Departing to the south they were hard to miss. Btw the Angels used a 767 for the ALDS but operated out of MCI, possibly for similar reasons. I've been a passenger on a 767 out of LGA before so MKC could probably handle it.

MKC may only be in UA's ops specs C70 page as a 737 only airport. In addition to the shorter runway, there may be size issues at MKC (taxiway width, parking stand size) that prevent it from being a viable 757 airport. The KC Chiefs, also a UA customer and who's stadium shares a parking lot with Kaufman stadium, fly out of MCI (they use 753 or larger aircraft).

Thanks for the info.

I have seen DL 757s in MKC a lot this season (Yankees, Red Soxs, Angels, etc.) and have seen everything from 767s to C-17s, and even AF1 once - even the A.Net pig of the year 737-900 has been in and out a few times.

tsra I envy your view. Btw I've seen Pan Am's Clipper Mermaid 747 lande at MKC in 1984 as a press charter ahead of the old 707 AF1. It was ferried out empty and Pan Am brought in two 727's to take the press back out. Probably the 747 is a bit too much for MKC fully loaded but it can probably handle most things smaller. However since they don't have a lot of real estate it could cause too many operational problems as LittleFokker points out.

MKC has some kind of construction going on I believe, also since the Royals ALWAYS fly out of MKC, it was probably safer to just fly out of MCI to prevent any fan issues.

Part 121 Supplemental flights which charter flights fall under do not require the destination to be in the C70. Part 121 passenger flights must be C70 Ops Specs approved airports though for each type.
