Another one that ordered
MD-11s and cancelled all of them was BCal. The order was placed already in the mid 80s when the type was under study. When BCal merged into
BA in the late 80s,
BA corporate management canceled the order and chose to order the then all new 777 instead.
Air Zaire also ordered a couple of
MD-11s but never took delivery of them. Air Zaire collapsed in the 90s.
Here are others I can think of:
Kenya Airways would have been the third airline in the world to operate the 767-400ER if they didn't cancel their order. They chose the 777 instead.
Northwest would have been the only US airline to fly the A340 if they didn't cancel their order. They purchased additional A320s and A330s instead.
Didn't Kingfisher order A380s? I believe they did, at some point. They never took delivery of any of them.
Back in the late 80s, TWA ordered A330s when the type was still under study. Of course given their financial struggle, they ended up canceling the order and never took delivery of any of them. TWA was in real bad shape in the early 90s.
Continental ordered a few 767-300ERs, I believe 5, but Delta ended up talking them. So Continental never flew the 767-300ER even though 767-324ERs were officially built.
UPS canceled its order for A380Fs so the freighter version of the A380 was never made.
Back in the 70s when the 727-200 was selling well and was still in production, Boeing was thinking of proposing a 727-300 to the airlines, an enhanced version of the 727-200. I believe that United and Braniff were interested, though I don't know if Boeing ever received firm orders. The 727-300 never existed. Boeing designed a then all new model: the 757.
