Lufthansa has retired A340-311 D-AIGI, which is almost exactly 20 years old to date. With close to 101.000 flight hours its probably the first A340 to cross the 100.000 hour mark. At least I´ve not heard about another one.

Regardless of which frame it is - well done to the A340 - one of my favourite types! The A340-500 is one good looking and very capable plane IMO. Too bad the 77L can do just the same if not more with half the number of engines. Nonetheless, I will always love the A340 and I hope to get to fly on all ofits variants...

Pity she is being scrapped. Presumably this will occur in Tupelo, like the deaths of most other Lufthansa aircraft?

Does anyone know how many flight hours D-AIFC, D-AIFF, D-AIHE or D-AIHM have?

The big news from that link is that it seems G-VOGE has found a new home.   Great to see more A340-600 operators.

Easily my favorite type. Unbeatably comfortable and looks better than anything else in the sky. Oh and the sound of those Rolls Royce Trent 500s.

From the outside, yes. Inside, they're pretty hard to hear - IMHO, the A340 is the quietest plane I've ever flown on (although I have to say my recent 787 flights were pleasantly quiet as well).

Me neither, but I am not really following the advancement of how many hours an airplane has flown. But it gives credit to the build quality of the A340 which is very good. As many other large airliners have a very good build quality.

For me that would be the A380 without any serious competition in that department. But the A340 is very quiet as well.

D-AIGD was retired with just over 100,000 FH I believe.

Lufthansa is the best airline for us "high utilization" fans (it's a strange niche!). I hope they get their A346s up over 100k as well.

such planes as JY-AID or CS-TOA might have run into six digits as well

101.000 fight hours on almost 20 years of service means that the aircraft was flying for 57,65% of its life, pretty much 14 hrs out of every single day on 20 years... of course not taking into account maintenance or any extended stop on service which woud make the utilization number even higher, just amazing!

You can say that this bird has spent more time on the air than on the ground...

The 77L does much more, with half the engines and significantly less weight.

To your point, one thing that's been telling to me is how the 77L has found a niche doing routes like ATL-JNB that a 77E COULD do, but had to take a significant weight/payload restriction to do so. Clearly you can still make money flying it at max payload but under it's max range, whereas I don't recall the 345 finding much life in that role due to it's OEW vs MTOW/payload.

What about the AR's 340's??? wouldn't some of those be a candidate for over 100K???

I would think so, they were all bought used IIRC and been heavily used by AR.

The A340s are all great looking planes but for some reason I prefer the looks of the A342 and A343. I was lucky to fly round trip MIA-EZE on both the A342 and A343 with AR. Great flights, the quietest I've been on.

Cheers, Ralph

I agree. I wonder what the hours and cycles of those birds were when they were retired. I'm referencing the AR342's. Some of those A343's they have must be around 100K as they were used upon delivery to AR.

I always imagined that the Kuwait A343s 9K-ANA, ANB, ANC + AND were among the highest hours A340s as they cover a lot of ground with just those four frames. I always see them in Manila and other far eastern airports.

Yup, the A340 is incredibly quiet inside. I would have no trouble saying that the A340 is quiter than the 787. The only thing that beats the A340 in terms of low interior noise is the A380.

Its a very impressive figure. And despite the high workload of the aircraft, Lufthansa always keeps the interiors spotless.

Far and away my favourite WB type to fly Economy.

LH does a great job of using its birds. It always amazes me how LH can fit so many different types and operate them all fully and at a profit when so many others fail.

I hope we can see some A346's get to this milestone as well, though I very much doubt that. But who knows, maybe the falling oil prices may breathe new life into the A340.

The A380 is quieter.

I enjoyed JL's 787. 2-4-2 in a wider cabin with better lighting, better pressure, and better windows.

I'm sure I'd enjoy it too, but unfortunately it's going to be rare to find 8-abreast in 787 in Economy.

Istn't it that some time ago LH invested with its LH Technic Brand into used parts services to participate in this business?

So guess a good number of parts of the 'deserted' LH birds find the way back to LHs maintanance arm and they feed the used Airparts channel.

But JL is the only 787 customer with 2-4-2 on all their 787s. NH has it on some of theirs. And how long with last as the holdouts with all 787 competitors being able to sell more seats due to their 3-3-3 configurations?

And I doubt more than a very few Y class passengers are aware of the differences and still book JL/NH based on the fare.

I hope JL is able to remain a 2-4-2 787 holdout but I wouldn't bet on it.

Different carrier, but anyone know how many hours roughly TP A340s have? They are also approaching 20 years old
