October 25: Very Last MD11 Scheduled Pax. Service

Mon Oct 20, 2014 3:19 pm

This subject has been discussed many times before, but it is only fitting to pay a farewell tribute to the MD11 in the final week of scheduled passenger service.

The last week of scheduled MD11 pax. service has arrived, as KLM will operate the two very last scheduled MD11 transatlantic flights this Saturday 25 October 2014 on routes YYZ-AMS (KL692 dep. 5.35pm) and YUL-AMS (KL672 dep. 7pm).

KLM will operate three additional 'farewell' flights on Tuesday 11 November 2014 to say goodbye to 23 years of MD11 operations.

This tribute was posted on You Tube by a German MD11 friend:

What MD11 tribute would you like to make?

It also marks the end of the three engine passengers' services.

Are there no Yak-42s or 727s still in passenger service?

As to the last MD-11 flight, I'd heard about the special farewell flights, but only now am I realizing they're going to be on 11/11.
The plural of Airbus is Airbuses. Airbii is not a word.
There is no 787-800, nor 787-900 or 747-800. It's 787-8, 787-9, and 747-8.
A321neoLR is also unnecessary. It's simply A321LR.
Airplanes don't have isles, they have aisles.

Within Russia there are some bookable Yak-42 flights.
The final airline flying passenger services with 727s is now Iran Aseman; TAM Bolivia, Ariana Afghan and Iran Air stopped flying them as well in the last year or two.
So better wording is: the end of the three engined widebody passenger service.

Thanks for keeping us informed. The retiremet will also end the long allegiance between KLM and Douglas/McDonnell Douglas-aircraft.

KLM sold all seats for the three 11 November 2014 MD11 farewell flights within minutes of the flights opening for sales, however today the airline is offering the very last two seats through a special quiz.

Starting Monday October 20 until Thursday October 30 anyone who answers eleven MD11 questions, qualifies for the last two available seats that are on offer.

Participants are asked to recall their most memorable MD11 moments by submitting pictures, video or written statements.

See: http://byebyeMD11.klm.com for participation details.

So A.netters this is your final opportunity to fly the MD11.

Sabena did the same in BRU when they retired their last 747 15 years ago. They did a farewell flight BRU-BRU around Belgium on a 747-300. The cost of the ticket was at that time 2000 BF which was the equivalent of 50 Euros. I was on it. Sabena never flew the 400.

True, the retirement of the MD-11 will be even more meaningful because, as some have pointed out in previous replies, it will be the end of trijet widebody operations. Biman Bangladesh turned the page when they retired their last DC-10 earlier this year. Any passenger L-1011s still flying? I don't think so.

There's barely any flying at all - there were never successful as a freighter, unlike the DC/MD-10/11. Just Orbital Sciences one now really.

I got my last MD11 r/t in back in April/May, only just as KLM tried to bump me off the first flight and reroute until I started reading EU261 to them off my phone - a fully paid passenger with a booking from months earlier is not a standby passenger!

Yak 40
Yak 42

And probably a few others...

I got my last MD-11 ride in in February this year. San Francisco to Amsterdam, PH-KCD. Unfortunately I missed the return flight two weeks later when my connecting flight broke down.

Funny thing, I went up to the cockpit after to talk to the captain (who graciously reported the hours on PH-KCD at the time, 85,000) and there was another plane nerd up there talking to somebody in the cockpit about the MD-11. I'll bet it was someone with an account on here.

I guess this is the end of the Widebody Trijet era in regular passenger carrying service, lasted 43 years. Started in Aug. 1971 with the DC-10, ending Oct. 2014 with the MD-11.

A bit ironic that the DC-10 and MD11 both ended regular commercial service the same year.

I fondly remember my last MD-11 flights, March 2001 on DFW-SCL-DFW on AA, and July 2006 on HEL-JFK on AY.

I still have the headrest cover with the introduction of KLM's first MD11 (PH-KCA Amy Johnson). It will definitely be a sad sight to see them go.

Iv been pretty lucky. Flew a Philippines Airlines DC-10-30 from Manila to Guam, onwards to Honolulu and SFO. Flew MAS' DC-10-30 a few times TPE to HKG onwards to KL.. Japan Asia's DC10-40 TPE to Okinawa and back and TPE to/from Kaitak.

Been on Delta's MD-11 TPE-Kimpo-SFO / return. Think I liked the DC10 over the Md11, although they didn't really feel much different.

Somewhat related. Have been on many many Cathay Pacific Super Tristar L-1011s. They were nice too.

Sad to see them retire, but retirement means a job well done !!

Anyway for me it will be a very sad day. I am in Canada to fly on KL672 on Saturday. It should be operated with PH-KCE.
This will be my 64th MD11 flight.

I have had many fine flights on MD11's. AA 142 JFK-LHR with 35 pax on thanks giving day in 1995 was one. In 2011 i went AMS-UIO
AMS-BON-GYE-UIO on board PH-KCA which was probably my favourite. I always had a soft spot for 'Amy Johnson' and was saddened she
never made it to the end of MD11 ops for KLM.

Having DC-10, L1011 and MD11 pax flights all finnish in one year is not great for us tri-jet fans. I'm sure all these new planes are great,
modern, efficient etc but they do nothing for me, give me a 3 holer any day.

ATL-PBI on DL M11s

There was a last minute sub for an L10 or 763.

My first M11 was a brand new TG bird, shiny with that new plane smell, SEA-YYZ then 3 days later YYZ-SEA both in J what amazing trans-con flights. My next two were DL PDX-ATL & PDX-CVG. DC-10 & L-1011 flights too numerous to mention, but I will say, nothing more fun than a short hop on a big, powerful jet, PDX-SEA, HNL-OGG, LAX-SAN, LAS-PHX to name a few I've enjoyed.

Just checked, last flight on MD11 was KLM to HAV and back two years ago.

Sorry to see them go. Best story ever I had with this bird was on Belize, when I came to watch the takeoff of a KLM flight.

There was a rasta with headphones on cycling on the beach road, ignoring the jet. Kind of "gone with the wind".
