QR Next A380 Route Is BKK

Wed Oct 22, 2014 1:20 pm

Bangkok will be Qatar Airways' next A380 destination:

Quote:
Qatar Airways has quietly updated their schedule to reflect their next A380 destination and will begin a daily A380 flight between Doha and Bangkok as of January 5, 2015.

QR836 Doha to Bangkok departing 1:55AM arriving 12:10PM
QR833 Bangkok to Doha departing 8:45PM arriving 11:55PM

Source
http://onemileatatime.boardingarea.c...s-bangkok-starting-january-5-2015/

QR currently operates 4x daily 77W aircraft between DOH and BKK. I suppose one of the 777s will be axed.

Poor TG. BKK is a dumping ground for 380s and an endless source of high volume, highly elastic passengers to Europe.

It´s good news for BKK, it´s not only more seat in the market but also the introduction of First class in the route, arriving DOH at 11:55 pm will allow pax to connect to many Europe that leave between 1:00 am to 3:00 am and then arriving early morning in Europe.

Also the schedule allow a turnaround of 2 hours in Doha so with 1 plane they can serve the route daily, however leaving the plane 8 hours on ground in BKK is not the best for the aircraft utilisation, but maybe in the near future they can add a tag on on the route.

But BKK is also a low-yield destination. That is why many European airlines have downgraded their flights.

I suppose nothing will be axed and this is just more capacity. EK flies up to 6 dailies to BKK among them two A380.

BKK-ME3-onward to Europe seems to be an infinite market.

Quoting LondonCity (Reply 6):

The ME3 also get local and African traffic to BKK. I.e. BKK is very popular for Saudis and flights Saudi-Thailand are not allowed (no diplomatic relationships between both countries).

BA most certainly won't dispatch their A380s to BKK. BA has a high share of premium seats in its A380s, something that is completely unfit for BKK.

Interesting indeed - especially concerning First Class. The A380s will be the only aircraft in QR's fleet with First Class. I dare to say, without any proof, that most to all First Class traffic to BKK are upgraders. It would surprise me very much to see an acceptable share of revenue seats in First on that route, as it would completely contradict what other carriers are experiencing.

Indeed, there has even been rumours that BKK could move to LGW. Almost no chance BA would use an A380 to BKK.

Can't say for F but I've been from Germany to BKK and back in J three month ago.

Outbound flight was on TK via IST on a B777 and return was on TG to FRA on a A380.

In both cases the J cabin was fully booked.

Just my 2 €-cents

BACK TO YOUR QUESTION.

That is not true. Off course they are allowed to visit any country, but because of Blue Diamond Affair, relationship was damaged permanently. (a James Bond-like action movie from the 80's)

The Saudi government have a particular problem with Thailand due to the Blue Diamond Affair:

Indeed as QR's A380s have 178 more seats in economy class versus their B77Ws. These extra Y class seats in turn will help boost seat factor on their EU routes which rely a lot on BKK feed.

During peak summer/winter season + Eid holidays time, you will see very rich families based out of Doha flying revenue first class on QR to BKK. But then again not year round !

One random question...due to the showers installed for EK, their A380s I am told can carry only 6 tons of commercial cargo in the belly. How much can a normal A380 carry in cargo tonnage in its belly approximately maximum?

To maximise connections. QR has 3 banks of EU/Africa/NA departures - 0100, 0700 and 1300, 3 arrival banks 0500, 1700 and 2200 . The midnight arrival into BKK allows for maximum connections into EU/Africa, as opposed to arriving at 1700.

I made the same experience. The usual a-net wisdom is that BKK is mainly used by tourists. That's not the case, I reguarly meet people who are using BKK as a gateway to Southeast Asia, for example Vietnam, Laos etc.

And how much of it was paid for? Most premium travelers to BKK are upgrades, that's what just about any airline in the market experiences. To warrant a large J cabin, you need to SELL the seats, not give them away.

See above. Seeing a full plane gives away absolutely nothing about the revenue situation. Yes, some people are going there on business. No, its not many. Otherwise carriers wouldn't be struggling with yields on the route.

I used to visit BKK very often and I can tell you that not every carrier struggle with yields, some European carriers do, but not all the airlines, otherwise check BKK schedule and you will see most of the most premium airlines in the world flying there and with big premium seating offering.

Actually BKK is a great mix of business travellers and tourist, plus a great hub for the whole area, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia.

How do you know they were upgrades and not sold seats??

I think in the last few years because the political situation the business travellers are less, but it is a huge market BKK.

I´m not sure, the most premium plane in QR fleet and you think they will send to BKK to get more pax in Economy?? that´d be a waste, for volume they can add another flight with B77W, only few Business and plenty of Economy.

How are the loads on the other QR new destinations ie MIA and EDI. The UK statistics website suggests EDI is just breaking 70% loads on just 5 days a week. Presume after almost 6 months at this load, upgrade is not pending ?

My experience is also just mine and that of the people who might travel with me, so it won't be statistically significant either, but about 60-70% of the time I fly TG, it's on a paid J ticket. Other times it's either an award ticket or a paid Y ticket. There is a fair amount of corporate travel going into BKK, especially from North Asia. I also have reason to believe that J demand is not as low as people make it seem on this forum. It's the competition and capacity to BKK that drives down yields, not necessarily a lack of premium demand. All of the European airlines that are struggling in BKK have at least one or two other competitors on the same nonstop route, with the Middle East carriers competing with their services as well.

MIA has done pretty good. In the month of August. From Doha to Miami, 95% of seats were full, while on the return from Miami 91% of seats were full.

Interesting that this flight is timed around the current DOH-BKK 828 which tags on to Hanoi. So this means a schedule adjustment to HAN will be needed.
