Sadly the sexy 747 has been killed by another Boeing invention with only 2 engines that looks like a 767's weight lifting brother, the 777-300ER. If Emirates didn't exist would the 777 be so successful ? One has to wonder.

The 747-8 sadly has sold badly but Lufthansa loves theirs, they make them work especially to airports where A380 are not very welcome like Haneda in Tokyo or Mumbai in India.

It would still be widely successful without Emirates. If Emirates didn't order these planes, other airlines would have picked up the slack caused by the void of emirates.

Wow. Looks like back then maybe airplanes weren't introduced with a lot of cynicism like there is today. Or maybe there was but the story changes as time goes on.

Took a trip to the MoF in Sept and RA001 certainly made me smile with her lovely new paint job....I just hope they eventually add the launch airline logos to her nose

EK only accounts for 16% of all 777 orders to date (289 of 1,805). Even with no EK orders the 777 would still be very successful.

Great article except there is a small error. Those of us who were around during the 1960's know that there was no 'Timothy Leary Magic Bus' as the article stated. He had nothing to do with the Magic Bus. That was a west coast thing put together by Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters. The 'trip' did go to the east coast and visited Leary but could not get away from him fast enough. A little bit off topic but just thought I'd set the record 'straight'.

The 777 was selling well back in the 90s Wasn't EK just a regional carrier in the 90s. I do not think Dubai it self what nearly what it is today back then.

So why are there 26 ladies in this pictures and not 24? And what about the 27 airline logos on the fuselage?

Was it that this picture was taken after they got 3 more airlines on board (and one stewardess couldn't make it)?

So now what? Where's Waldo? I mean the 27th 'stewardess'? Which airline didn't send one of their sexies to Seattle on 30 September, 1968? Anybody up to playing Jeopardy? Matching one by one uniforms & logos starting on the left?

No wonder about it. The 77W has proved to be the most efficient non-A380 long range jetliner so far. The 787 may beat its economics, but it is just starting to come into its own. Meanwhile, there are so many airlines flying to Asia especially that use the 77W almost exclusively for long haul. And yes, EK has the largest fleet of them but even without them the 77W would have been a smashing success. And remember, if EK was not flying those passengers someone else would be, and most likely would be using 77W's to do it.

- 4. Air India
- 5. One of the many dark blue ones
- 6. Air CANADA ?

Interesting to note that 3 airline logo's have not really changed at all since the 1960's:
- KLM
- QANTAS
- SAS

And ...who are the last two logo's underneath the BOEING name?

Perhaps not 150, but probably 100 to different operators. If EK was not there, most of those passengers would still fly, and the 77W would very likely be the plane chosen to fly them. And even with 150 fewer sales the 77W would count as a smashing success.

If EK hadn't ordered any 777s, Boeing could have offered faster delivery times to other customers who may well have gone to the competition if they were able to offer earlier delivery. That's been a significant factor in orders for many types.

Looking at the pic again, I think Aer Lingus just MIGHT be in there. No 25 could actually be green, not blue. It looks like the uniform of the mid-60s, but the blouse is a slightly different style. Here's a line-up of uniforms over the years:

It would be either the first or the sixth one. She also looks Irish: she's looks like she's totally unimpressed. Or bored out of her mind.

According to the first poster Alitalia744 no 26 is Alitalia. He seems quite certain of it, so I assume he knows what he's talking about, given his username. Also, she does look Italian. So could no 3 be Lufthansa? SR100 thinks so, and he could be right:

Looks similar to the second uniform on the right

17. CONTINENTAL - powder pink

In 1968, both Continental and Braniff had pink uniforms. However CO uniform had a hat while Braniff didn't. CO had another uniform with dark blue clothes and a red hat, like the one next to UA. So my guess for 17 is Braniff.

I've annotated the rollout photo with numbers and the current results -- hope it makes it easier for others to figure out which people are being referred to.
