Took off over Maho bay, and crashed shortly thereafter. WX sounds like it could have been a factor. Also, they state the same aircraft was involved in an incident at SXM two days before.

Terribly sad news. RIP to the deceased pilot, and prayers to the victims' families. Very eerie thinking I probably saw the same exact plane during my visit to SXM this past summer

Was in SXM the past few days. While having dinner at the Sonesta, we saw the search and rescue/recovery underway. Wasn't a nice night.

That's sad. We were there last week. Wouldn't wish seeing that ever.

Hello all,

May the pilots rest in peace and condolences to their family and friends. Working as a ground mechanic for American Eagle out of ORD, I've been a pax on this bird as all of the shorts fleet as well as the ATR 42's they had. A noisy, un-pressurized bird but tough as nails and always brought me back home...

But it is not a FedEx airplane.

FedEx contracts them. There are a ton of contracted feeder airlines that have their planes painted in FedEx colors. There are also a few that dont. Kind of similar to a regional airline flying for a major airline. Sometimes, you look out the window expecting to see the aircraft painted in the colors of the airline you booked, but you look out the window and see something you weren't expecting.

Such a sad loss. Does anyone know if the pilot was able to radio a distress call? Any speculation on what could have happened?

Heavy Skyvans that lose an engine on takeoff are generally in a world of trouble. Can't speak for the 360, but it wouldn't surprise me if there were similar issues.

Absolutely false if by "colors" you intend to say "livery". Only FedEx aircraft will bear FedEx livery. Colors... If by "FedEx colors" you mean purple and your choice of orange, blue, gray, green, red, et alia... Well, that means nothing, really.

I am a bit confused here. There are contracted airlines that have FedEx liveries or paint jobs on their planes. Here is just one example I found. Maybe I should have said FedEx feeder?

I could not imagine. I am a bit surprised it only had 1 pilot on it! Shouldn't it have 2 pilots? I would imagine the workload would be pretty insane in an engine loss on this particular aircraft. I know when AA Eagle flew these, they had 2 man cockpits. Can someone educate me on this? Is it different crew requirements on cargo in comparison to passenger flights on this particular aircraft? Could say AA Eagle had flown the Shorts 360 with just 1 pilot?

Where did you get that one pilot theory from? ASN clearly states:

One of the crew members died, the other is still missing.

Wow! I must be blind! I read the article twice and didn't see that. I would blame it on not wearing my glasses... Thanks for pointing that out.

I still have that question though. I have seen single pilots flying the Fairchild Metro.
