Next City/Status Of Current Routes For SLC?

Sun Nov 02, 2014 5:20 am

Just wondering what the next international destination could be from SLC. SLC already has MEX (beginning end of this year), CUN, SJD, GDL, PVR, YYC, YVR, CDG, and AMS (starting spring 2015).

I would bet that LHR, KEF, YYZ, FRA, SJO, or YEG are all possibilities.

(by SLCSFOPDX Nov 1 2014 in Civil Aviation) and Air Canada To Resume SLC? (by SLCSFOPDX Nov 1 2014 in Civil Aviation) and Air Canada To Resume SLC? (by SLCSFOPDX Nov 1 2014 in Civil Aviation) will now be discussed here instead of separate threads

I remember when I was excited about SLC.

Then I just became glad that DL stuck around.

Without DL, I think SLC would be a glorified BOI, with a heavy WN presence.

Wouldn't be surprised to see BA in the near future, but I seriousty LOL'ed at the suggestion of EK starting SLC service. Maybe in 20 years.

Oh right SLC

Well I don't know much about SLC other than it's the Global HQ for the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints but I reckon it would be down to DL to add new international routes rather than international carriers being attracted to SLC.

IMO there are at least a dozen US airports / cities that EK would start before considering SLC, such as MIA, PHL, EWR, LAS, ATL, DTW, MCO, DEN just to name a few. Then, I'm sure they would increase the frequencies to several of their current US ports before considering SLC as well... I don't even know if EK would have given a though to SLC to be honest... "Maybe in 20 years"...

The question is: Why would EK even consider starting SLC???

It would be interesting to see if AS/QX starts to beef up service in SLC. I was surprised to stumble across the QX flight from SLC-LAX and SAN. SLC-YEG, or other Canadian cities? Possibly, but who knows who would give SLC a try. Its sad to see SLC go from a major hub for WA and a big player for DL for quite some time, then hand most of it over to OO and Regional jet flights. DEN has always overshadowed SLC. Even WN went from having a large presence there to what it is now, since they increased service at DEN. I wish SLC all the best. I loved living/working there in the 80s. Between our flights, I would sit outside on a tug watching the WA banks come and go. Especially the DC10s.

After a quick search on Wikipedia for what routes are currently served from SLC I see two possible gaps in YYZ and YUL. Again just stabs in the dark here, not an expert by a long shot.

Am I the only one that believes SLC will never happen for EK?

SLC can barely support flights to Europe so how will a 14-15 hour flight to Dubai work?

Perhaps try to regain seasonal service to NRT? Weren't there weight restrictions on the A332 when DL tried it? If/when DL takes delivery of the 788s could SLC-NRT perform better?

I heard rumors for a while of an EK route to and from SLC for some type of charter service. It was supposed to start on a weekly basis spring 2015. Been a while since I heard that one though.

Please. The only ones I could see happening are YEG due to the DL hub. DL won't add LHR as they do/will fly to the Skyteam hubs in CDG and AMS. I don't see BA adding SLC anytime soon. KEF? Again, with the DL service already in place I don't see anymore Europe.

Also, I understand having enthusiasm for your local airport but you sure post a LOT on this forum. 3 seperate threads created yesteray alone asking about DL in SLC and then EK to SLC and Volaris to SLC. Come on now. Take a break from your PC for once. I see all of those threads are locked now so maybe the mods have locked them hopefully. Geezsch.

Lastly, SLC has ZERO chance of EK to DXB, at least in the next 10 years at least.

I'm not sure where you get this idea. Other posters knowledgeable about DL have indicated that SLC-CDG does very well. It was also up-gauged in equipment size recently. I doubt that DL would be adding seasonal SLC-AMS if SLC was barely supporting flights to Europe.

There was a rumor on A.net that DL was about to discontinue SLC-CDG. Right after that, DL instead put a A330 on the route with an increase in seats.

Yes, IIRC they couldn't do the westbound flight will a full load. I think the 777-200LR with 115K engines could probably do it unrestricted, but I'm sure that's way too much airplane for this long thin route or DL would already be doing it.

Routes like SLC-NRT is exactly what the 788 was designed for - to allow long thin routes to be flown that otherwise couldn't be done economically or operationally.

I think SLC having year round flights to MIA, CLE, FLL, PIT, TPA & RDU would certainly be a start. Up the frequency to northeast cities would be another (PHL, EWR, BWI) which only see 1x a day on DL this time of the year. Would like to see year-round to MEX as well.

I was just in SLC this past week on a business trip SNA-SLC-MSP and back. It's a great hub. Lot's of mainline to places you wouldn't expect: STL, MCI, GEG, MSY, RNO etc.

I just saw in the last round of OAG updates that IND-SLC is getting cut. Not sure how this route performed.

Sorry I typed that when I was tired and didn't quite get across what I was trying to say. I didn't mean loads were poor, I meant that there were so few services to Europe from SLC that adding a service to DXB with EK just didn't seem realistic.

I too had heard this, University of Utah Health Sciences has a huge group on Middle Easteners, along with many involved in cancer training etc through Huntsman Research center. these charters were to have been associated with that to my understanding. However, its apparent it never came to be.

AS serves SLC-LAX, with mainline 37's not QX. SLC-LAS, and BOI are served by QX

Every airline serving SLC has flights from SLC to the LA Basin from SLC except F9 (SkyWest ops LAX for UA, DL, & AA)

I like SLC, use it a lot, looking forward to the new teminal in a few years but I just don't see a market for any major additions or expansions. A few better non-DL options to the east coast would be welcome but reality is the market probably isn't there. SLC is only what it is because of DL hub. The AS service is very welcome addition but the only major western markets they are not covering at the moment are PHX and (i think) PDX. Unless they start going East, very doubtful, can't see the expansion.

Personally, some other competition to Canada would be welcome. DL sure knows how to fleece a capitive audience in that respect. I don't hold out much hope though.

Spirit my see an opportunity on some routes with high fares...possibly.

Granted SLC and Utah generally is doing better economically than many areas and is somewhat of a hidden gem in that respect, but it is no ATL, NYC, Chicago etc. The local O&D is the 3M folks in the entire state, and some of those can get to DEN and LAS easier than SLC, so there is a real limited market to support extensive service. If the DL hub wasn't there we wouldn't see near half the service and frequency we do at the moment. As for EK, that will be announced the day after I win the Powerball.

I think LHR will most certainly be served by DL, the slim chance is BA with the 787, and very last is VA because of DLs ownership. But honestly, I think SLC has a better chance of DXB than VA service.

I think NRT on DL may happen with the 787.

And maybe one Mexican LCC and/or Aeromexico. In fact, I'm surprised AM doesn't have any presence in SLC.
