Aer Lingus To Announce New US City

Sun Nov 02, 2014 6:10 pm

Aer Lingus is set to announce a new US City on the East Coast on Wednesday.

Quote:
Aer Lingus will announce its 2015 transatlantic destination at a press conference on Wednesday. It will be an east coast USA location rather than the Texas option with which Christoph Mueller tantalised the media last year.
http://travelextra.wordpress.com/201...tras-sunday-supplement-nov-2-2014/

Awhile back, there was an interview with the COO of Aer Lingus. He said they were looking at a new Florida city for 2015.

Can't wait to hear the announcement. What's your prediction?

Well East Coast limits it to a pretty obvious destination.

Well, looks like BOS, BWI, MCO, IAD, NYC are covered... What's left? PHL, BDL, RDU, CLT, FLL, MIA, PBI... Did I miss any?

If I were to choose, it would either be PHL, IAD, or MIA. All three have been rumored to be started for years now.

Could it be the DFW that was rumored earlier this year?

I was thinking either Miami or return to LAX.

If they go with Florida FLL makes more sense than MIA because of the B6 codeshares even though I'd love to see them here at MIA

Of what I heard, the rumors are not pointing to FLL. Apparently Aer Lingus has no plans to launch FLL.

Only ones I heard are MIA and IAD

I thought so too - but apparently not. They operated on behalf of UA once upon a time.

How are the chances of BWI, instead of IAD? Just throwing it out there ...

They used to fly to IAD but axed the route at the same time as they cut the SFO and LAX routes. UA currently serves the route using a 757..and with an EI codeshare.

Considering that the SFO route was re-launched - and with great success - this year it would seem more likely that they will similarly return to another former route ie. IAD (which also is a UA hub) more likely than they would to MIA (AA hub).

FLL, being a B6 hub, would seem to have potential however MCO has already increased from 3-weekly to 4-weekly for next summer, and EI management would likely want to ensure that main focus cities such as IAD are served first.

Guess we'll have to wait until Wednesday to see!

I think US Airways serves PHL-DUB. Aer Lingus would go where there is no competition like rumored, MIA and IAD.

Exciting news for EI and DUB. EI really has built up a very nice transatlantic network. They are only missing LAX now

I'm really hoping a return to BWI. Why compete with United at IAD or with AA/US at PHL? BWI has no competition, it's a cheaper airport to operate from, and there might be some incentives to boot.

I'm gonna throw my weight behind EWR!! I know UA already fly there from DUB and EI fly to JFK but EI have previously flown to EWR along with JFK and if they time it right, say a 1pm departure from DUB it'd fit well with the current 9am UA flight and the current EI departures to JFK at 10.45 and 16.30

Any idea what metal will be likely used for this? Existing or will they bring something new in?

airfleets.net notes an A330-200 on order, although i am not sure that's right looking at the detail,

Registration of that one is interesting EI-EWR... shows as stored, but would be curious if anyone has any more details on it.

While I am sure EI would do much better than ET if they launched the route, there is absolutely no room for two carriers on the route. Either EI was never interested in returning to LAX, or ET was quicker on announcing the route.

It's probably not happening, but I'll throw this one out there just for fun: PVD.

When Condor announced FRA service, there was talk about a "second international carrier" about to announce service. And the most Irish suburbs of Boston are south of the city.

Here's a better question - what aircraft will operate the route? 757? A330? Rumor is they will have 767s running around in S15...

Miami would be a good choice, I don't know offhand of any other non-stops from there to DUB, it would have good leads from South and Central America. Problem is could it be a 7x/week - daily service or less than that and with seasonal service.

As much as I would like to see more international variety here, I'm placing my bets with IAD.

I will cross my fingers for PHL, though. We need more colors! And green is something we have very little of... Frontier excluded, because until they start repainting more birds, they're still just a silver airline.

I don't know if there is enough traffic to warrant both UA and EI on IAD to DUB. The UA flights aren't daily during the winter as it is and is suspended for a couple of months in January and Feb

EI used to fly to BWI and IAD, and they left for reasons I do not know but i think it was due to the economy. I think the route was doing well enough from what I heard.

I would welcome them back since I have family in Ireland.

Is Philadelphia a city with strong Irish links? I would be surprised because PHL is so near JFK and the economy of the Philadelphia area is not as strong as the Washington area which is a richer area with more premium traffic.

Has anybody considered it could be Atlanta?

Nobody wants to fly a 757 across the atlantic. If EI put a 330 on the route, watch the traffic grow. I avoid flying the 757 and connect in Boston for Dublin.

The 757 is also slower. If you look at flightaware, you will see that it is flying slower than an airbus and 777 planes.
