Yes great work with the new ad campaign QF, I really like it, although it would have been good to see more of the QF product. Overall though I think they're on a winner. QF are definitely on the improve in more ways than one, which is great to see.

Curiously, the ad is blocked in New Zealand - "not available in your country" - at least for me.

It seems a bit odd given how many Aussies live in NZ (I'm one, my neighbour another) but it doesn't matter where I go - Youtube or even the Qantas media page - the result is the same, no show.

Agreed! I am still at a loss as to why the "You're the reason why fly" campaign ever existed in the first place. When you have a brand like Qantas, surely one can do a lot better!! Cheap cheap cheap campaign!

Love the new Ad, best part is when the A380 is rolling up to the terminal in LHR!

The Ad is kind of similar to the last ISCAH commercial where the kids started overseas and ended up in Australia by commercials end.

Can confirm both of these don't work either for me in New Zealand, in the past they have avoided the 'Spirit of Australia' tag line over here, I wonder if thats why?

Can anyone confirm how many 744's and 763's QF have sent to Victorville, and how many of each are still to be retired? Am I right in saying a 763 ended up in Alice Springs "retirement facility, if so, why? Could it be this ac may finish up flying under the QF freight banner?

I believe 4 ended up (or are going to ASP) but all are destined for WS, not freight IIRC

Not sure how many retired so far, but I believe there are 13 (soon to be 12) 744's, and 6 763's left.

I needed the tissues when watching this. It brought back the memory of after 12 months of being in Vietnam Jun 67/Jun 68, arriving in Saigon in the belly of an American Herc, and seeing that 707 with the red kangaroo on the tail just waiting for 159 fellow Aussies and I to take us home. One of the arrival scenes in this advert with wife and child greeting dad was a poignant reminder of my meeting my 12 month old daughter for the first time (she was born 1 week after my departure to Vietnam). Apart from the private feelings I had when I saw this advert for the first time (emailed to me by QF) it is so typical of the phrase that I have heard from many others over the years "seeing a red kangaroo on the tail reminds me I am going home, and when inside the aircraft I know I am going home" Great ad QF,

Glad I'm not the only one who teared up watching the new QF ad.. I was talking to some friends this morning and they said the same thing.

Full marks to the ad agency in connecting the Qantas brand with such powerful emotions... I think this ad will be successful for them - in their home market at least.

I personally liked that one, but I think I must have been the only person who did. It was definitely a flop.

Since then they haven't done any television commercials, but their print media has been pretty lack-lustre. First the "curiosity" Frequent Flyer campaign was so boring it was painful, and then "It's About" just didn't make me connect with the brand at all.

I don't know, but would make a guess, that they've just change ad agencies. I have been wishing they would dump whoever they were using for at least 12 months now, and whoever it was would never have been able to pull out this triumph IMHO based on their previous material.

After four years of dire advertising, I feel that Qantas branding is on the come-back.

I loved that short film series as well. I actually wish Qantas had used that song more in the advertising, but I think that this slower version of "Feels like Home" is better suited for this campaign.

As an aside, I got into liking Radical Face entirely through those clips. I went and looked up what the song was, and then listened to the rest of the album. I'd never heard of them until then.

I can say that the Curiosity campaign worked really well with my young son and he still remembers it. Made him more interested in robotic planetary exploration as well. I reckon he'll be a loyal Qantas flyer for life now (assuming he doesn't outlast the brand).

I understand the sentiments of the latest Qantas ad as there is something very comforting about boarding a Qantas aircraft. It's like stepping outside of whatever strange customs and languages that you've been immersing yourself in and being able to relax. That said, I don't usually *want* to go home from a holiday.

I preferred the music of the "Reason we fly" adverts to the current crop and liked the Lisa Gerard "Now we are free" campaign I think preceded it. But then I think dreamy works best anyway when it comes to flying. But if it is connecting emotionally with viewers then that's the main thing.

Shortly after the ad came out there was a little bit of talk in the news / morning news shows about legal action against QF for copyright breaches regarding the use of the music in that A380 'Shadow' ad... At the same time the band Men at Work (regarding their song Down Under) was facing legal action for copyright breaches, being accused of "stealing the song's flute riff from the children's song Kookaburra Sits In The Old Gum Tree":

"The judge also ruled that a Qantas advertisement which used a small similar section of the riff was not in breach of copyright laws. EMI said it was pleased with this decision but Mr Simpson was not ruling out further legal action.

"In the Qantas ad there was a smaller part of the song and so the judge felt that wasn't enough to qualify as an infringement of copyright. But we'll be giving that some more thought," he said."

Qantas obviously saw the similarities between both songs given how well they put together those songs / music in that ad to give it meaning - it was very 'Australian' sounding. I liked it. It made me feel at home...

Finally got to see the ad via the UK edition of the Daily Mail:

It worked for me - like billy-o - because I have always associated Qantas with home.

Back in the 1980's I was working a lot in some curious places, and after one particularly hair-raising couple of months on the Kenya/Uganda border, I wended my way home and finally got on a Qantas plane at Singapore.

As I boarded, a cheerful steward said to me "G'day, mate, welcome home." It was exactly how I felt - that I was already home, just by being on the plane.

Even now, living in NZ and loving it, I'm still powerfully affected by that concept.

That was okay, I own the soundtrack anyway.

What was nice was when they played Gerrard's music while on the tarmac, a pleasant calming start to the flight. I really miss Jetstar's original background music ("Let's fly away" - can be heard in the background here). They used to play it over cabin/seat audio while taxiing. Good for the nerves.

My favourite "theme"/"boarding music" is, and I'm sure will always remain, the "Keep Discovering"-era Emirates music. Not only did it reflect the Emirates brand perfectly, at least as it was portrayed at the time when Emirates was still new and exciting and represented an invitation to "discover", but I also have so many happy memories tied up in the music.

Unfortunately it has now been replaced by something horrendously generic, but every time I hear it I can't help but smile. Just hearing it now makes me want to fly Emirates so bad; they have lost their glory of the pre-2008 days but they shall forever remain my favourite airline (sorry Qantas, you're number two!)

Managed to watch the New QF commercial for the first time as i'm now in NZ (thanks for the link, Mariner)
To be honest i wasn't fussed on it. I didn't like how it was so 'jumpy' back and forth between people and places, which made it hard to follow. Just my 2c worth.
My favourite Qantas campaigns always have been and probably always will be the "I Still Call Australia Home". Still get the chills no matter how many times i watch those.

After listening to the two videos (I admit I skipped through 2) I'm with you, though I've never flown EK. CX's boarding/safety music circa 2007 to be memorable and I can still hear ...Cantonese speech... Brace! Brace! ... Cantonese speech... from the safety video.

The guy from the IPA was saying that QF is about to go to the govt body responsible for funding emissions efficient investment for funding to go towards a new fleet of aircraft. I mightn't be quite right on the wording but could this be first signs of the 789 order?

Interesting to see two "dead-heading" VA pilots come into the Lounge. They sort of looked like pilots with their carry-ons etc but had removed all VA paraphernalia (ties, lanyards etc), The giveaway was the cap sticking out of the carry-on.

Is it typical that flight crew dead-heading remove all of this identifying stuff and why the Lounge? Don't they have a crew lounge?

BTW. They were good and avoided the wine and stuck to the coffee and toasted sandwiches!!

Deadheading crew usage of the Lounge is apart of their entitlements. The biggest reason is that the crew facilities in all the airports do not provide the best are for rest. The lounge provides those needs perfectly.

Is it normal for airline employees to remove items that show they work for the airline whilst on duty travel, or when commuting? Yes. There is nothing worse than being constantly questioned (or abused) when commuting, or on duty travel when you aren't working and have no idea whats happening. Even airline employees want a break.

As for lounge access? Very usual in this party of the world for employees to be let in dead heading. But rather common overseas. However lounge passes are often given as recognition of good performance, long service etc. Unless very high up. However many employees travel so much they buy QF Club, Koru club, or VA lounge access, for both duty and leisure travel. As an airline employee you can't earn FF miles, but generally you can still purchase a membership.

If you mean aircraft type, it'll be a 744 (though I'd say you already knew that). Rego wise, I'll elaborate a bit on what 777ER said - it's true that there's no way to tell until just before the flight, because any factor could affect it. Up to a few days prior, the aircraft scheduled for your flight may need to be used to replace a broken aircraft, may go tech itself overseas, may need to sub for another type, may be delayed elsewhere due to weather, etc. Even if the exact aircraft were scheduled so far in advance, these kinds of factors mean when it comes to that flight being operated, it is extremely likely it'd be by a completely different rego to what was originally scheduled. I'd even go as far as to say don't trust the rego until you're on the plane - I was supposed to fly BNE-LAX on VH-OEF last year (and was going to be on it up to a couple hours before departure), but ended up on OEI.

Qantas will be revamping international Y meals, removing the tray in favour of 'serving plates,' adding more meal options, introducing Q-eat, improved mid flight snacks and 'welcome bicksford drinks' (though served after take off). Looking at the menu for North American flights, it looks to be quite an improvement!
