QF Reveal Retro Jet

Mon Nov 10, 2014 7:02 am

G'day all.

I thought this deserved a post outside of the Australian aviation threads, I couldn't find one of the topic - however mods if I missed it feel free to delete.

QF have revealed pictures of their first retro-jet on a 738

http://www.ausbt.com.au/qantas-to-un...=flipper&utm_campaign=home-flipper

Looks great to me, really like it. Just wish we could see what on the winglets! Hope they aren't just grey.

It's a shame we don't have as much flying art as we once did, but any special livery is welcome.

Anyone agree QF is getting its mojo back?

I have two sectors on QF738s at end of the month. Here's hoping one sector is this one, and the other one Mendoowoorrji...  I remember this livery coming to AKL on VH-EBJ as a child.

Unfortunately VH-XZP, the retrojet, is the last aircraft on order for Qantas mainline. Not a single new order on the books

Looks stunning. Finally a worthy picture to replace my current desk top picture. Bet you an A330 would look brilliant in this retro colour scheme.

Looks quite good....but it bugs me that the Kangaroo is so small and has shorter legs than on the current Qantas livery. The Kangaroo's legs should be a bit longer and reach further forwards. I suppose its a bit difficult for the livery designer, since it can't stretch onto the rear fuselage, like in the current livery, but you'd think they'd use a little artistic license and make the profile of the primary symbol (Kangaroo) look as much like the the current livery as possible (while still giving it the wings).

Anyway, despite that gripe, its nice to finally have a retrojet in Australasia.   Would be nice to go on it, but given the propensity of my many Qantas 737-8 flights to not be operated by VXB or XZJ, I probably shouldn't get my hopes up.

This livery would not work on a 380 . and an aboriginal design on a 380 please they looked bad enough on the 744

We won't see an A380 with a special livery until the centenary in 2021.

Imagine a photo to celebrate the 100th anniversary, with John Travolta's 707 at the front, then a 737, 747, 787, A330 and A380 each wearing a different historic/special livery in a cluster behind it. Now imagine the Sydney skyline in the background, perhaps with a bit of Botany Bay in the foreground.

The 737 looks great by the way -- well done QF (on a bit of a roll this week!).

Disagree!

The main objective of resurrecting a colour scheme from the past is nostalgia. What would be the point of bringing it back, and tweaking it? Can't think off hand of another retrojet with a modernised version of its retro scheme.

Top marks for this effort, as I remember the colours clearly from my spotting days in the Far East in the seventies and flew on VH-EAE. I just about recall the V-Jets at Singapore Paya Lebar. Perhaps an A330 next time one needs painting?

And while we're in Australasia, the seventies ANZ scheme could do with a reprise also.

One of the best retro jets so far, and probably the best Qantas colour scheme to choose. My interest in Qantas started after seeing one of their 747-200Bs in the BA Maintenance area in the 1970s, in this scheme.

Agree I think it would look great on an A330 too.

Don't think there are many retro designs the A380 could get away with somehow, where does the cheatline go?

Keeping my fingers crossed I'll get to see her (or better still fly on her) next year.

Only if we can also have Nalanji Dreaming. That aircraft was the prettiest blue (I like blue).

But I agree, I think that retro liveries should go on the big, new planes. Not 737s and A320s. I can't wait to see the 748i that LH will paint in retro colors.

That is one awesome looking Retro Jet!

I would not be so annoyed by an equipment swap from a QF widebody to a 737 -(which happens frequenty to me when flying QF domestic)- if it resulted in me getting to ride on that beauty!

Disagree. JMO, but I find them far more appropriate when on the closest thing available to the original aircraft that wore them.

A Southern Airways livery would look out of place on a DL A330.
A New York Air livery would look even more dumb on a UA 744 opping SFO to Asia and back.

With all 767's going very soon    and the 747 slowly leaving    and no more 737's on order, this will most likely be the last retro scheme.

As good looking as the A330 is I can't see it in a retro scheme (maybe the TN livery harking back to the A300), but as for a V-jet A330 I don't think it's going to happen.

And as for the A380, the less said about that in a Wunala type scheme the better. The 747 could pull it off, but the A380 does not have the sleek lines of the 747. The A380 would look like a flying blood clot.

This 737 though is just beautiful! We'll done Qantas!

I disagree.

The best Aboriginal paintings work well on a big background - they are very complex messages - and I always thought they looked a bit cramped and splodgy on the 747. The A380 would give them space.

I don't understand the enthusiasm for retro liveries - that was then, this is now - but if there is to be another Aboriginal themed aircraft, I hope it is the A380.

I'd much prefer the ANZ sixties' livery to the seventies. To me, the sixties' livery evokes a real turning point in New Zealand's connectivity with the world, and it's much more of a classic design. Maybe even a TEAL retrojet? The seventies livery - well, maybe one day, but it's much, much too soon for that one.

But back to the QF retrojet - it's superb, and I was sceptical that it would work. Makes me envious. Is it an aircraft that may fly the Tasman?
