Quoting AA737-823 (Reply 218):
Cool! What's a CMSC?

Common Motor Starter Controller

Quoting AA737-823 (Reply 218):
Hopefully this change will reduce the "fuel spewing onto the tarmac" incidents.

Think that was a bad valve.

Quoting AA737-823 (Reply 218):
That's an interesting design concept. The outflow valve on the 737 most certainly could not be used for this purpose; I'd be curious to get my eyes on the 789 valve, to see how they manipulate it into a "scooper" device...

From what has been seen, the aft outflow valve drives much further past 90' to where it becomes a scoop.

Quoting AA737-823 (Reply 218):
We've been observing this phenomenon ever since 789 flight testing began. I still don't understand the point. Clearly Boeing does, but it seems like a risky tradeoff. How many times will maintenance jack the plane, put it in 'air mode' to do unrelated tests, and have the gear doors drop and knock over a work table OR smack a mechanic?

I'll see if 'engines not running' will prevent this. Worried about flaps being retracted during MX with the spoilers down. Sure that there will be 'warning' , 'caution' and 'note' all through the prep procedures. So far, it hasn't been a regular to MCO.

Quoting AA737-823 (Reply 218):
That's very interesting, because on a recent 788 DEN-NRT flight (aircraft #901), I was surprised to observe the flaps move between just three positions for landing: UP, just a LITTLE, and just a BIT MORE. I really expected more detents to be used, but then I'm accustomed to an approach in a 737-700, which typically hits notches 0, 1, 5, 10, 15, 25, 30, and usually down to 40, depending on our arrival runway.

Explained as more positions with greater lift for the heavier -9.

Quoting AA737-823 (Reply 218):
I don't know; this was last Tuesday, and the 744 fleet isn't know for being.... given much TLC.
I love the 747 in general, and booked that flight specifically to fly on another one. That was a mistake; I should have either ridden the 787 NRT-DEN route, or jumped to ANA on their 77W.

Will take a look. Will be sad to see 747s leave the fleet. A-350 just doesn't seem to me to be able to replace the 4 holer.

United Fleet Upgrade Status Part 22

Story just came out about ExpressJet moving 36 EJR145 aircraft to TransState. Also, 16 ERJ145s were removed from ExpressJet by 9/30/14 and another 18 will leave between Dec 14 and Jan 15.

Does anyone with info on ExpressJet know if the following units have been removed from service?

Based on the press release today that the EMB-120s will be removed by Summer 2015, it's highly unlikely that any more will receive new paint. Related discussion in this thread: Skywest Inc. Fleet Changes (by AirportRival Nov 17 2014 in Civil Aviation)

Those still in Blue that should get new paint are:
Trans States E145 - 9 (2 additional in House colors)
Shuttle America E170 - 1 (1 additional in House colors)
Mesa CR7 - 2
SkyWest CR7 - 4

744 N178UA has been offline since Monday at SFO. Did it then sneak over to VCV/AMA for paint, or is it just there for Mx?

So are all the non-DirecTV WiFi equipped planes ultimately going to get Streaming video? I saw on a flight status yesterday that it still said overhead video for an A320 flight. How long until it is on all of them?

cosyr:
The 320s are basically done with overhead video, etc. as all but one have slimline seats, WiFi and state streaming WiFi.

The last 320 to be completed is in LCQ and should exit with slimline seats in a couple of weeks. There are 10 319s with overheads, but 3 are now in mod and I'd expect all 10 should be completed in a month or two.

The 36 sUA and 13 sCO 739ERs that have WiFi should receive streaming content as should the 6 remaining 753 with overhead when they receive WiFi.

I hope the "turn on" of steaming WiFi comes as quickly as when the 319/320 got stream - it seemed a few stations during overnights were able to something with software to turn on the content.

On a kind of related note UA officially just turned on the streaming function for android users

Looks like N178UA was only at SFO for 3 days as it flew to ICN on Nov 20th, so not much time for Mx. Not sure why FlightAware shows that it also flew from NRT-SFO on the 20th before flying to ICN, as it doesn't show the outbound flight to NRT which would have departed on the 19th, in order to operate the NRT-SFO flight the next day!

Flightaware has errors like that all the time. I remember it was offline for two months starting in May and must've been getting a heavy check.

And she's still proudly in tulip colors and looks stunning, I saw her at SFO. N174UA and N655UA are also still in real UA colors. 6455 went to CDG yesterday.

Cal(UAL)Tech can probably confirm this for you but the fleet plan UA published didn't show any 763s exiting this year.

I saw this as well and I just thought it was a a error but I do wonder if the plans have changed because at the beginning of this year if I'm not mistaken UA was going to retire at least 2, 3-class 763's. But is seems as if those plans have been put on hold according to the fleet plan.

In an investor call from the beginning of the year they said one was leaving in October. They also listed one going on the website. October is past and N660UA is still here so it's safe to say it isn't going anywhere.

Let's add to the mystery.

763:
N653UA sked to enter MIA 2124/30Nov , this one was not on any exit list
Would rather doubt conversion to 2 class unless it's a more minor conversion of F going, additional Y.
Would expect HKG to do full 2 class conversion if lavs removed, power in 100% of aircraft, etc.

738:
N22109 sked to ezxit MIA 1026/2Dec with WiFi, potential scimitars
N33294 exited INT 2121/30Nov with WiFi, 99% sure of scimitars due to others in same age range

Does anyone know the logic for the scimitar mod/ If it's publicly known, I must have missed it.
I also wonder when/if UA mgmt will decide to modify the A320 fleet with sharklets... that'd be hot!

Scimitars not publicly noted to my knowledge. 738 seems to have all mods over aircraft #280 or so exiting with scimitars. Looking for some type of confirmation on each if possible.
No idea on sharklets.

738:
N33209 sked to exit MIA 1026/2Dec with WiFi, possible scimitars, (exit delayed)
N14214 sked to enter INT 2130/30Nov for WiFi
N26226 sked to exit INT 2131/1Dec with WiFi
N14228 sked to enter MIA 2148/2Dec, hopefully for WiFi
N73278 sked to enter INT 2141/2Dec for WiFi

I don't think sharklets can be fitted onto UA's A32X without wing reinforcements as they are much older models.

The oldest is from 1993 and the youngest is from 2002. The retrofit option that includes wing strengthenings isnt available until 2015.....all of UAs aircraft could be retrofitted if they want to.

I don't think the question is whether they can perform the retrofit or not but can they do it without the added cost and time required to strengthen the wings? As the answer to that question appears to be no, and given the age of the frames in question, I doubt it would make financial sense for UA to retrofit their Airbus fleet with Sharklets.

The first 73G with WiFi is scheduled to fly UA 1262 tomorrow, Dec 2. United.com confirms WiFi is available.

I was wondering why it was taking so long (almost 3 months) for it to return to service.

Some of those coming through MCO are getting the Scimitars removed and replaced, provisioned?, others need the wing spar reinforcement that takes up to 2 weeks, unprovisioned. Haven't seen anything about retrofitiing the A-320s with sharklets, at least not yet.

N174UA is the second oldest 747 in the fleet, and N178UA is the fifth oldest and has the highest flight time hours (about 100,000). If they're getting painted now, that makes it seem like UA is planning on keeping them around for a while yet.

I wonder if, now that the UA 747s have (or soon will have) in seat power and wifi, they'll stop getting trashed on these boards.

Nasty rumor that the 747s are scheduled to start exiting the fleet late next year. The way things are going, that could change or already has........

Supposedly more 757s scheduled for exit late this next year, and in '16.

Rumor is the 767-300s for now, have a 2 year stay of exit. Nov '16 is the talk.

So, UA deferred - 7 788's in 2015 and will extend + 11 767's by converting them to 2 class 767's, I guess that would allow for the removal of a few 744's in 2015. Plus, with all the 777's nearing the end of the mods, that would be like adding a few units. They seem to be doing a lot of maneuvering in the widebody fleet.

Somehow, I missed that. If you say 10 789's + 11 763 two class conversions in 2015, then we can see how they can decrease some 744 flying. With oil dropping, I'd be surprised. We'll find out in late Jan with the new fleet list as part of the annual filing at the latest (CO used to project a rolling 12 months, UA just calendar year).

Yeah it would be nice to keep the 744s around a little longer as they are always neat to fly. I think LAXint posted a chart that showed the planned 744 retirements a few months ago. IIRC one was supposed to leave next year...of course that was prior to $65 a barrel oil.

The 744 can still print money if you can fill it and they have plenty of routes to use them on. Oil prices dropping makes them that much better. The 748 would easily work if ever ordered, which we know won't happen.

The 744 can still print money if you can fill it and they have plenty of routes to use them on. Oil prices dropping makes them that much better. The 748 would easily work if ever ordered, which we know won't happen.

I agree, I'd like to see United's 744s soldier on, with WiFi, ISP, and improved J and F catering. But UA does not need all the ones it currently flies.

UA has recently switched some longtime 744 routes to other types. Example -- LAX/SFO to SYD/MEL. They went from the 744 to the 772ER on SFO and LAX to SYD, and ended the tag-on to MEL with an LAX 787 nonstop. That freed up at least four 744s. 787s keep arriving, and now 11 763s will be kept and converted to 2-class.

What to do with the excess 744s except get rid of them? The one frame being used for Charters, N194UA, is enough for that role, IMO, although I suppose UA could designate an exiting a/c for Charters, since it would have more modern seating than the one in use now.

Frankly, and this is a pipe dream of mine, I'd like to see UA 744s going to deep S. America, where they can sit all day, saving hours and cycles. GIG especially. But ONLY after they have ISP and WiFi !
