Delta Aircraft Refurbishment

Thu Nov 13, 2014 3:19 am

Delta announced almost a year ago their plans to refurbish the A319, A320, B737, and B757 fleet. What is the status of these updates? Have any aircraft been updated or is there a projected start date?

There is one domestic 752 (N548US, a PMNW aircraft) that is currently being modded. Since the 752s are getting completely new interiors, it will take quite a bit of time to get FAA certification for these mods.

Here the list of the B752s, (75E), which have been converted to 75S with the flat-bed seats in BE:

N624AG
N706TW (currently in mods at VQQ)
N712TW (currently in mods at VQQ)
N717TW
N718TW
N721TW

Here's the list of the B753s which have been modded with winglets and AVOD and 110-volt/USB throughout:

N581NW
N582NW
N583NW
N584NW
N585NW
N586NW
N587NW
N588NW
N589NW
N590NW
N591NW (currently in mods at SAT)
N595NW (currently in mods at SAT)

If anyone wants to start a proper thread to follow-up on all the aircraft being refurbished that would be great.

Is this the A/C that DL got in a fire sale about 3-4 years ago? I think it was an Aero Mexico bird before this?

I see occasional comments that it's a hangar queen, but it has roughly comparable cycles/hours to the rest of the 75E fleet although it's a couple of years older than the others.

Looking forward to seeing pictures. I think these will be the only 752s in the world equipped with the new bin system.

Does anyone know whether the larger capacity overhead bins which are being installed in the 56 B752s, are also being installed in the B753s? There was no mention of this in DL's press release linked in the opening thread. It would make sense if so, but no sense if not. I'm actually surprised that there was no mention of the B753s having any mods at all, despite what is currently being done to them!

Nope, not on the 753s. Note that the 753s have a 737NG-style interior, and DL isn't modding the bins on the 73G/738 fleet either.

Potentially a few of these have received mods, but it's very difficult to tell using FlightAware/FlightRadar and Dl.com to verify.

I am happy to see the NW aircraft getting an overhaul. To be frank, the legacy First Class seats from NW were a disgrace, and the sooner they, and their thin padding with drop-down trays, are put out to pasture the better. (there, got it out of my system).

Many of the DL originals were given touch screens up front, on a par with the 737-832s, but it is great to hear that all 752 will eventually be upgraded to a newer standard.

Now if they would just get started on the Airbii.....

I agree, I like it as well. It is a nice change to see some color in a monotonous sea of blue and I also like that Delta has incorporated the widget in the headrest. Also, it looks like there is more padding.

It looks like N548US is getting ready to return to service. I assume that this is the first DL B752 (non 75E) to be modded and it has been performed at IND. Interestingly another ship, N544US, was sent to VQQ for mods, the same location as the 75Es being converted to 75S spec. So it would appear that DL is going to be using both locations to perform the mods to these 56 ships.

For clarification, the "56 757s" DL is modding and planning to keep around into the future do NOT include the N7**TW ETOPS planes or the 753s, right? Meaning there will actually be more than just 56 757s when the phase-out of the older planes is complete.

Plus 10 more that have been given a retirement reprieve. They are going to be in a new charter only config. Work on those start in spring last I heard. To be done in ATL.

Older than the 319 fleet, on the whole, and generally flown on shorter stage lengths. There will be power ports at each seat and streaming IFE, though

Well, I'm bummed and thrilled by this. Just this weekend, I flew GRB>MSP>LAS in first and the MSP>LAS flight was a 752. Seat was very wide and excellent leg room. Couldn't be happer with that. But disappointing a long-ish flight like MSP>LAS has no IFE. (Despite flying infrequently, I guess my expectations were too high). WiFi via GoGo worked reasonably well, however. (Not exactly blazing, but serviceable). It's good to know that hopefully by my next trip to LAS, I might have an updated a/c.

The return LAS>MSP flight was a 319. It was perfectly fine, but certainly beginning to show signs of tiredness.

I don't know if the codes will be changing for the 752s being modded, except the 75E ships become 75S.

Delta.com lists the following versions: The mobile App lists the following versions:
757 75A
75A 75E
75E (before mods) 75J
75M 75M
75N 75N
75S (after mods) 75V
75V 75X
75X

Despite multiple calls to the Diamond Medallion direct phone # over the past year to tell them that the mobile App is terribly out of date in its seat maps/aircraft configurations, nothing has been updated. As you can see, the website lists a plain 757 config, but no 75J. The mobile App doesn't list a plain 757, has a 75J and no 75S. And to add insult to injury, the mobile App still shows multiple other errors which again I have brought to DL's attention with the promise that my updates will be forwarded to the appropriate dept. The A320 lists 16 FC seats, while showing the correct 12 seats in the 'View Layout"; the A333 is still showing "sleeper seats" instead of the "flat-bed seats" and all the B763ERs are still showing "sleeper seats" instead of the "flat-bed seats". I haven't even bothered to look at all the B752s and B753s to see whether they are correct! COME ON DELTA, IT'S TIME TO GET THE MOBILE APP UPDATED! Even UA's mobile App shows the ship # that's operating the flight, so that at night time, we don't have to wonder what ship we're flying on!

Just to clarify what I posted above re-the difference between the delta.com website and the mobile App, when it comes to showing the different B757s. Apologies for how I tried to distinguish between the two. Obviously it didn't work out!

Delta.com lists the different B752s as follows:

757
75A
75E (pre-mods)
75M
75N
75S (post-mods)
75V
75X

Mobile App lists the different B752s as follows:

75J
75M
75N
75V

AAR @ IND is a heavy check contractor. So it is going for an 'M' check. I would bet it also gets the new interior config since during 'M' check the interior gets completely removed.

The first updated domestic 757, N548US flew to ATL today as DL9995:

I walked through ship 5648 (N548US) today. The interior looks phenomenal! Everything is new, not refurbished. New ceilings, O/H bins, sidewalls, galleys, lavs, seats etc. Those O/H bins are huge! It has lots of power ports at all seat locations, mood lighting similar to the B737-900. I've never seen a commercial 757 interior that looked this good.

Do the lavs have the vacuum toilets, or are they still the old "swirly" type with the blue ty-d-bol liquid?
Any pics to share??
I can't wait to see this.

I see the C Series in the future to replace the 717 patch, but before that they will get some feedback from Republic first.

They are still the "swirly" toilets. Only the 757-300 has the vacuum toilets. It would be quite an undertaking to retrofit to those.

I have lots of pics, however I think it would be prudent to allow DL to release those.

This question may belong in a separate thread, so apologies if it does:

Can anyone list the ship #s and/or registrations of the different versions of the B752/757 i.e. from my list above we have 7 versions excluding the 757E/S ships as these are the easiest to identify, being the N7**TW and N624AG ships with ship #s 6801-6818. Also do we know yet whether ship #5648 (N548US) is now a different version since mods or not?
