Remember that N548US was modded at IND, so we don't know how long another outsource would take on the first ship that they receive. Still wonder if N538US was in SIN for mx though!

In its latest conference call, IS&S claimed that the MD88 project was something akin to doing a favor for a favored client, sort of as if it wasn't work they really wanted or needed. REALLY? It was their biggest freakin' contract for a whole bunch of ships.

Normal in the course of business, while I am in a completely different industry (property management) I have many vendors that will take losses on occasional special projects to keep their regular contract work, best part is no skin off either back when you want to cancel as they really did not want to do the work anyways so doubting any bad blood between the two. Now IS&S may be reactive after the fact and this may have been a lucrative contract but it's all a dog an pony show and you don't piss of your biggest customer even if they created a temporary loss. Trust me there is quite a bit of infighting between many large companies on contracts, managers are paid to make it all smell like roses in the end.

Ok, I've made a note of that for the next update.

Also, N535US flew to IND, presumably for mods. It was a 75A, so it's likely that it will be the first 75H.

Favor, hah!

IS&S reported a backlog of $72.5 million as of 6/30/14. On 10/6/14, IS&S issued a press release indicating that the DL MD-88 upgrade work represented $62 million of that backlog.

N592NW (753) is now heading to ATL from SAT. I looked at 581, 583, 594, and 596 on Flightaware and none of them appear to be heading to SAT to replace 592 just yet.

I don't know which airframe is next for SAT,( I'll try to look tomorrow) but I bet it was already there before the last one left. Usually it is a swap out.

These aircraft would be due for C Check this time of year anyways. The internationals always get done in the winter months.

Strategic bump as I'll be in-and-out of town over the next two weeks.

Expect a 75S and 75Y to emerge from mods on/around Jan 28, and of course, one of each to enter mods.

A320s will essentually do M88 style flying.

AAR @ IND is a heavy check contractor. So it is going for an 'M' check. I would bet it also gets the new interior config since during 'M' check the interior gets completely removed.

AAR did the 75H interior.

Everything is new, not refurbished. New ceilings, O/H bins, sidewalls, galleys, lavs, seats etc

First A319 goes in April 2015.

This is incorrect, only 5635-5649 will become 75H's.

5635-5649 will be 75H

5650-5657 will be 75D, along with 685-699, 6700-6717

NW had 5635-5649 delivered in the mid 90's with full ETOPS equipment on them. At one point, NW had orders for over 70 757-200's (total fleet size, not total future orders), at least until the 757-300 was announced. NW converted their remaining 757-200 orders into 757-300's, rounding out the total 757 fleet at 72: 56 757-200, 16 757-300.

The last few 757-200's, 5650-5657, were delivered concurrently with 757-300's in 2002. NW no longer saw a need to have ETOPS on the last few 757-200's, as all 16 of the 757-300's would get ETOPS, to replace the DC10-40's on Hawaii routes. As such, 5650-5657 never got the full ETOPS equipment that the earlier 5600's had.

5639, 5640, 5641, 5642, 5643, 5650, 5651 were slated for interport as its own fleet, it was then decided not to have another subfleet for such a small amount of aircraft. The seating config between the 75H and 75D is the same. The difference on the inside is the type of seaets to be used. 17 total 75H's.

The best 5650 and 5651 can do is EOW-90, not ETOPS-180.

I may well be proven wrong in the end, but until then I really doubt that 5650-5651 will be called 75H's, considering they are now, and will be in the future, totally unable to go to Hawaii.

That all said, I always thought it would have been a smarter use of aircraft to place EOW birds on the interport flying, rather than 'waste' full ETOPS ones on it. Flying to NRT and SPN doesn't require ETOPS, only Extended Over Water. With that, I always felt using 5650-5657 in NRT would have been better, considering ships like 39, 40, 41, 42, 43 could all do HNL/OGG/KOA/LIH, whereas 50-57 cannot.

But what do I know, I don't run the show.

These two aircraft will probably operate Interport, but with the interport designation being removed they will just take on the role of the 75H code due to cabin configuration.

Which would, of course, be a smarter use of them.

However, at present, NRT-GUM and NRT-SPN are actually dispatched as ETOPS-180 flights, despite not requiring it. If you're right, and 5650-5651 are to become 75H's, they'll need significant rework and mods to become ETOPS aircraft. Unless DL intends to change their entire methodology of dispatching those 757 interport flights, entirely.

Quoting wjcandee (Reply 147):
Also, any word on the status of the formerly-IS&S cockpit upgrades. Given the delay in announcing the replacement vendor and schedule, I actually wonder if moving forward with IS&S might not have been a faster solution.

Perhaps DL have paused on the mod and are doing a wait and see with how fuel prices stabilize. Any upgrade investments (flightdeck, aerodynamic mod, etc) are going to have a longer payback period at these oil prices.

Quoting wjcandee (Reply 147):
In its latest conference call, IS&S claimed that the MD88 project was something akin to doing a favor for a favored client, sort of as if it wasn't work they really wanted or needed. REALLY? It was their biggest freakin' contract for a whole bunch of ships.

What a joke... a desperate spin attempt clearly. This would concern me as an investor, and give reason to consider selling my shares.

Quoting wjcandee (Reply 147):
And it's a high-profile failure that would give me pause as a potential customer.

Exactly. IS&S had to find a way to make it work, IMO. It was a clear failure on their part.

Quoting pezzy669 (Reply 152):
Normal in the course of business, while I am in a completely different industry (property management) I have many vendors that will take losses on occasional special projects to keep their regular contract work, best part is no skin off either back when you want to cancel as they really did not want to do the work anyways so doubting any bad blood between the two. Now IS&S may be reactive after the fact and this may have been a lucrative contract but it's all a dog an pony show and you don't piss of your biggest customer even if they created a temporary loss.

I don't think that's the case here. DL were not an existing client of IS&S, nor was the MD mod a small side project from their regular work. As MIflyer points out, the MD mod was essentially 85% of the company's total revenue backlog. It was by far and away the org's number one priority.

Quoting MIflyer12 (Reply 154):
IS&S reported a backlog of $72.5 million as of 6/30/14. On 10/6/14, IS&S issued a press release indicating that the DL MD-88 upgrade work represented $62 million of that backlog.

It wouldn't shock me if this company went belly-up in a few years.

Quoting n515cr (Reply 173):

A somewhat related question for you: Any word on DL's 2015 fleet planning/retirement numbers at mainline?
Did you know that a Boeing 717-200 is really a McDonnell Douglas MD95-30? ;-)

I haven't seen anything that covers the broader fleet, but I did read that the 4 75V's are likely gone at the end of this year.

The post didn't go into the detail. Extra mainline narrowbodies would permit yet more (up from 325 in the current mainline pilot contract) 2-class RJs. It's conceivable the 50-seater count could drop below 75, forcing some difficult network drops from today's ~200.

Looks as if this configuration is gone from the Hawaii routes by Summer 15 as the 757's show 20F/179Y and the 753's show 24F/210Y. Looks like KOA gets a 753 01May.

Any updates on the Airbus 319's? Flying on two in March upfront and am a little disappointed to know they still have the old NW first class seats.

The first A319 doesn't go in for mods until towards the end of April.

First A320 is already in mod.

N723TW exited VQQ 12 Feb. Expected RTS on 14 Feb. Delta.com still showing recliners but that's likely inaccurate.

What's the oldest 757 in the fleet? I'm guessing one of the exSQ birds?

That looks to be the case...oldest of the active 752s, anyway.

All four 75Vs were delivered to SQ in 1984. N751AT is the oldest with a delivery date of 12 Nov, 1984.

I figured this was the right place to post this. Here's a link with some pictures of the new DL seats. And not too bad of a review...

Those are not new seats; they are the existing seats re-covered and re-stitched. The domestic 763s haven't gotten any extensive mods in a while, and are unlikely to since they are planned to be retired (with the possible exception of the four ETOPS Hawaii aircraft).

N594NW just completed a SAT-SAT flight.
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N594NW
I guess it'll be heading to ATL soon. Just two more 753's to get modded.

N685DA has been in IND for a really long time. n525cr's list shows that it should have been done by 17Feb. The 752 domestic mod project seems to be going really slow.

Yep, just landed in ATL a few hours ago.

Possibly may have had other work done. The 'estimate' was based off one aircraft, which probably isn't the best way to go about it, but it's all I had

It was also in a different config than the first aircraft that was modded, so that may have something to do with is.
