New Scenic Tour Airline To Be Based Out Of SLC/OGD

Fri Nov 14, 2014 8:38 pm

Website for Utah Airways announces the commencement for scheduled service in January 2015 out of SLC to area national parks such as Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon, Canyonlands, Yellowstone and Mt. Rushmore. Media says they are based out of OGD...

Creaters hope to attract visitor and local passengers who wish to see these western destinations but didn't realize how far apart they are... can't make a day trip out of it.

The aircraft to be used is the PA-31-310, six passenger aircraft.

Odd that OGD was the airport of choice for based operations. Seems like SLC would be a better option since most air travelers visting the state fly through that airport. I'm sure it was much less expensive for them to fly out of OGD.

It's nice to see entrepreneurs like this adding a little flavor to the airline industry, especially today.

OGD would seem like a good place for LCC to serve Salt Lake City Ryanair style

Some things are worth the effort. The National Parks are one of them. The last thing that I want to hear when I'm out in the middle of the wilderness hiking is a plane buzzing low overhead.

Well their website says they are located at SLC, not Ogden.
Seems like an idea that could work, but not with a Navajo. I certainly don't want to fly a Navajo SLC-WYS-RAP-SLC.
Maybe for a day trip to Bryce, but that is an easy drivew from where these tours start.
Riddle: Which lasts longer, a start-up airline or a start-up football league?

Didn't notice that. The media must have it wrong.

I am too not sure if there is a demand for this service. From SLC, OO already offers daily flights to Moab, West Yellowstone, Jackson Hole, Cedar City, and St. George, and Rapid City...all of which serve those national parks and monuments. That is stiff competition already in place.

Seems like an odd choice of aircraft, a low wing twin? Would make it hard to see much of anything if you're seated over the wing and engine.

This wouldn't have anything to do with the 'US airline' ordering those Chinese Y-12Fs, would it? They are high wing, but have too few and too widely spaced-apart windows I believe for effective flight seeing. However their very low acquisition costs would be attractive to a start up.

The website says "you will fly from Salt Lake City (Ogden Hinckley Airport)" the flights are pure sightseeing, i looked at their Grand Canyon tour $800 for 2.5 hours flying and 4 hours at the Canyon. Everything on the ground appeared to be an optional cost over the $800. Not cheap, but I suspect they are not looking for the cheap leisure flyer, more the wealthy tourist with diposable income. Which does make Ogden a bit of an odd choice. I guess cheaper than SLC, and they won't have to line up and wait for a slot in the queue of commercial traffic.

OK, a few points to make here, and nothing in a positive way... first, the last Piper Navaho was manufactured in 1984. Second, a fully loaded Navaho will have an anemic single engine rate of climb. Some of the routes planned will require flights above 10,000 feet just to clear the terrain, such as North Rim Grand Canyon.

Also, having flown throughout the American southwest in light planes for many years, I would strongly suggest an ample supply of barf bags for the passengers for the many bumpy cumulus filled summer days that these flights will likely encounter.

Here is where it states " we are located at the easy to navigate Salt Lake International Airport"....

I can't see flying 700+ r/t miles from SLC/OGD in a Navajo to see the Grand Canyon but that's just me. Good luck to them.
