Lufthansa, German Government To Build Ebola Jet

Sun Nov 16, 2014 4:01 pm

On behalf of the German Government Lufthansa converts one of its A340-300 for special MedEvac missions with patients suffering from Ebola.

Several seat rows will be removed and three isolation units with own exhaust units will be built in. It will be a stand-by jet operated by medical team and voluntarily LH crews.

The conversion should be finished by end of November. It's D-AIGZ "Villingen-Schwenningen" ln 347.

Basically a good idea, but... Why a A340? Why is Germany not taking one of their old A310s for this? Or one of the old LH 737s, which, with just two patients on board, should be able to fly to West Africa?
And what does "several seat rows will be removed" mean? That its flying in regular airline service inbetween evac services? Will they be wasting this big jet to fly out one or two patients at a time? I hope not.

No. As I understand the Jet will not operate in regular service anymore and remain stand-by for Ebola-missions only.

Well as the article says, one criteria is to treat the patient during the flight otherwise they could have used the Luftwaffe Airbus A310 MRT. So space is an issue and the article also mentions to evacuate medical staff in case of an uncontrolled outbreak ... not only patients.

So I'm guessing this is an A340 that's either retired or due for retirement? Makes sense in that case, and being able to evac medical/emabssy staff and nationals in an emergency is an added bonus. They should have the capacity to avoid refuelling as well, if necessary.

Surprisingly the plane is only 14 years old. A bit early for retirement?

Can you elaborate on the own exhaust units ? Other than that doesn't the German military already fly quick convertable A340 that could be used for that mission ? At first I thought this was what was being talked about.

I don't know how France plans to deal with a similar situation, right now we're building an hospital in Guinea to deal with the epidemic, so there is potential for more medical professionals to be infected, although they should be extra careful by now.

German air force has quick convertible A310s, but those are more for transport, not curing during the flight, and also the capacity is insufficient for the upcoming mission.

Repainted already, no Lufthansa letters nor the sign at the tail.

The article says the government will provide the plane to other countries, too. There is no need for every country to have such a plane sitting idle and waiting for the day that hopefully never comes.

Inside the planes that the German Air Force has, no sufficient care can be provided to people in those isolation compartments, the A340 indeed will have dedicated medical staff onboard which can look after them. Additionally, it provides capacity for an evacuation of medical and military staff if needed.

The A340 has been chosen as it has the legs to fly back home from any point in Africa without a fuel stop in between.

Currenty, only two planes of an US company can do such missions, hence the goal of German government to become independent.

Guess the plane will be kept in service for at least another 20 years so it is better to have a newer airframe then an earlier model.
Also LH will be happy to get rid of one A340 as the market for 2nd hand A340s is nearly non existent (spares and Iran might be the only choices right now). With selling one additional A340 to the government which is used for a good cause they also have a good PR.....

I still wonder though that the aircraft is not being used by the Luftwaffe but the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
It will forever be a McDonnell Douglas MD 80 , Boeing MD 80 sounds so wrong

Logic dictates that the aircraft will be operated by the Luftwaffe Flugbereitschaft. They have the pilots with the type Rating and the present 340731^9 are mainly used by the Chanceler, the Prresident and the Foreign Office as well.

The difference might be that this particular a/c is for the use by the FO only

Good way for Lufthansa to get rid of the 340s, just give them at higher price than new to the government. The same as they already did with the German chancellor plane. Again without publishing a tender just under the hand.
Nice way to burn tax payers money.
I still miss Trans World Airlines and the L-1011

The F9 A320 that flew the Ebola patient in the US had all the seat covers, floor tapestries and air supply filters changed. I do not know how they will carry out the maintenance in this case.

yeah, would be ice to issue a tender and get the work done by Irkutavia or Air France. Full of bugs.

The aircraft needed soem refurbshment such as communication Equipment and other security Equipment, a VIP compartent and so on. The aircraft may have come to the Luftwaffe at a higher Price than LH originally paid, but they did all the needed work as well, plus the Equipment.

As the article from Spiegel says, the plane will be operated with Lufthansa crews. It won't be part of the Flugbereitschaft fleet. Seems like the German government arranged a lease deal with Lufthansa.

Well, I just flew Luftwaffe from IAD to FRA on an economy seat 3x4x3 748. I'd rather have been on the Ebola plane. Worst economy section I've ever been in.
