In all honesty, I think that Air France has successfully addressed their 'air france grime' issue. They don't seem to have had any exceptionally filthy aircraft around for ages.

This site's anti AF bias is rather disappointing. That said, I'm pretty surethat KarelXWB meant this as a light hearted joke.

With all the respect that I have for you, I think there is nothing of bad in "bashing" AF. If AF have such bad reputation it is because it deserves so. AF is a company, not a person, and it should do more to improve such image that we have of it.
And please do not tell me that a company is made of persons, because I do not feel so for such multination billion driven business, and that at the end, I feel that at AF the real problem are the persons that work for it (in the periods when they do not strike), not the machines (clean or not) or the money.
Again, nothing of personal.

Maybe it is a new cost-cutting exercise. Only wash the left side of the plane as that is what the boarding pax see!

Finally people can see that AF is NOT the only airline flying dirty planes from time to time....
Funny to see this as I was preparing on my own a compilation of pics showing dirty filthy planes around the globe, and one should be surprised to see that not only cheap airlines fly ugly dirty aircraft!

Knowing the size of the A380, and that it probably need a ton of water and a lot of soap to make it shinny...and the contamination of said water with skydrol, fuel, lubricants and guess what else, I am quite happy to see dirty BIG aircraft...

Its refreshing to see that LH and AF think of the environment

The thing is that a plane can get like that in one single stop. If you look at the dirt patten, it mostly streaks down from the over-door gutters. This aircraft has been somewhere with a lot of particulate in the air where it was raining. If it spends some time in the rain at a cleaner station, then it will get washed off.

Let's face it, airplanes much like cars and any other objects in this world get dirty.. Back in the day the early jets were always covered in soot.. Planes have been getting dirty for years, and years and years from now they still will be getting dirty..

Now I want to know when the airlines are going to replace those old 757s with those special ordered 767-400ERs..

Interesting thread... I was actually thinking of starting a similar one last week after my return trip to Buenos Aires with IAG.
Dirty plane on the inside on the way down and dirty beaten down aircraft on the outside on the way back!!
I flew on a BA B772 (G-YMME) from LHR to EZE in Club World and it had to be one of the dirtiest, most disgusting cabins I have ever been on.
The divider was filthy and there was an accumulation of some orangish junk that had never been cleaned all along the separator. Honestly, I have been on some regional trains in Eastern Europe that were cleaner than the interior of that plane.
And in business class! I even took a few pictures (which I will try to upload). AF may have had less than stellar white aircraft on the outside, but their interiors are usually always spotless. Definitely not the case with BA!!!
My flight home EZE-MAD was on an Iberia A340-300 (EC-GHX 'Rosalia de Castro') was so beat up on the outside. It wasn't just a case of being dirty (it was) but paint was missing and it had been 'touched up' very poorly. Shocking!!! Almost looked like the plane was glued together! I took pictures as well.
The interior at least was clean...
And one of the dirtiest aircraft I have ever seen in my life was actually a Lufthansa A340-600 at Osaka in 2010. I'll never forget the sight of that plane... almost black with dirt!!!

It needs a repaint from long time ago, they put it in storage last year and it was reactivated months ago. I expected it to get a new coat of paint, at least a new orange stripe that has faded away completely. But it seems that IB can't paint anything bigger than a 757 in its paint shop since few years ago, so I guess the plane will be like that until replaced by a new A330 next year.

I think that airlines keep their airplanes cleaner since they discovered that dirt increased fuel consumption, given that it adds weight to the plane and increases drag.

Well, I just took a TGV last week that appeared to have been used as a tunnel-borer. Very clean interior, but outside was fabulously dirty. I rode from Karlsruhe to Paris--very clean trains on the German side of the border and pretty grimy on the French side.

Off topic--I had a German-plated rental car in Alsace earlier in the week and got some nasty gestures from local motorists. There was a lot of 1914-2014 WWI programming on TV that week...maybe not helping ecumenical relations!

One thing to add, LH for the most part seems to keep their planes pretty clean.. I've often heard the wheel wells were soo spotless that you could "eat off of them." I know this might seem a bit OT, but I have also heard LH planes are pretty well maintained too..

I remember how Continental would wash their planes right on the ramp at the gate. I have never seen any other airline do this. It was rare to see a Continental plane dirty.

Here is a video of CO washing a plane at the gate. http://youtu.be/t6iUnDlIUc4

At least the new UA is keeping their planes clean. A lot better than they use to look as seen in the photo earlier in the thread.
Worked Hard. Flew Right. Farewell, Continental. Thanks for the memories.

I wish that I had a picture to share of what I think was quite possibly the filthiest aircraft that I have ever had the displeasure of flying in.
Without much surprise, the airline was America West and the aircraft was a vintage Airbus A300.
Obviously this experience was from well over a decade ago.

Not only was the exterior a complete mess with oil & hydraulic fluid streaks all over the wings and control surfaces, but as we were boarding, I noticed a visible puddle of hydraulic fluid near the port side rear landing gear - I was almost tempted to point this out to the flight attendants, but thought against it at the time.
The interior of the aircraft was almost as bad - there was torn carpeting material in the aisle, the seats were discoloured and the inner window panes were streaked and dirty.
The window shades were sticking and obviously dirty, seat back trays were unwashed and the entire cabin had a foul smelling musty odor.
During the flight - even when there was no turbulence - there were constant squeaks and rattles throughout the cabin-I think that all of the passengers noticed that, it was that loud. Add to this the loud "backfiring" (the loud boom) that both engines did at least a half a dozen times during descent and landing procedures.

Needless to say, this was my first and *last* flight on America Jest (West), ever.
Along with the filthy exterior and interior of this America West flight, the flight attendants also had a horrible attitude with their "self-loading cargo" - nary a smile, nor a "welcome" or a "thank you" - it was clear that they all truly hated their jobs and projected that negativity to their paying customers. Great way to run an airline.

Of course, there are certain eastern and Asian countries that have airlines operate aircraft that almost literally fly "on a wing and a prayer"... An old friend who lives in India once told me of an Indian Airlines commuter turboprop that had various parts of the cabin interior patched up and held together with duct-tape!

Things could be worse, I suppose.

Une cabine parfumee? Reminds me of Sofitel using perfumed air freshener in all their rooms all over the world. I smelled the same scent in Minneapolis as I did in Shanghai! I don't really like perfumed things in general (rooms, clothing, men). I'd rather smell the air to determine if it's REALLY clean or not.

are you sure this was on a A300? Or America West?

Yeah, I was having some doubts about the aircraft make and model myself -- I know that it was DEFINITELY America West, but you might be right about it not being an A300 - I am fairly certain that it was an Airbus model, but probably something other than the A300 or variant, as I wrote previously.

Sorry if I got it wrong -- but thanks for pointing it out - If I remember which airframe it was, I will update my post.
